- Dear crush,
You don't know me, or at least I don't think you do. I know you, though. Well, I know your name. I've never actually talked to you. I couldn't talk to you in public, so I found a happy medium: an anonymous letter. I've been thinking about you a lot lately, and I think I know why: I think you're cute. I like you. I don't know what you think about me, since (I think) you don't know who I am, but that doesn't matter. You're cute. And I have something I'd like to ask you.
First and foremost, I'd like you to know how I feel about you. You don't need to like me back. You don't even need to write a letter back. I like you, and you don't mind (you don't, do you?), so there's that. Heart on my sleeve (literally), no secrets here. It's anonymous, after all. Well, maybe not entirely. You can probably guess who I am. Anyway, I like you. I really do. I think about you, and I just thought I should tell you. I like you as much as I love cinnamon buns, and I'm not sharing my cinnamon buns with anyone, so that's a lot. So there.
Well, I said I had something to ask you, so here it is: will you go on a date with me? It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just two people going out to have fun. We don't have to go to the movies or anything like that. Actually, I'd rather not see a movie. Have you ever ridden a horse? I'd love to take you to the riding stable. You might like it. But you don't have to if you don't want to, that's just me.
If you do accept to go on a date, please meet me at ten o'clock this Saturday by the lake. You know which lake, it's the only one anywhere near here. And I mean ten PM, the one that happens at night. I don't want to go out in the daytime, it's too bright and people might stare. I'm a bit nocturnal myself, I'd rather be awake at night than at any other time.
I hope you get this letter. It means a lot to me. I hope to see you soon!
Love,
Your secret admirer
PS: If you can figure out who I am, bonus points for you!
This was sent in high school. The next day, Maeve received a sticky note on her locker:
