His name is Tuft, but he pronouces it with a silent 'T' so it sounds like Tuf, which sounds like tough, which is what he likes to think of himself as. Although, that's not really how you pronounce his name, it's actually one of his nicknames. He was named this because of his tufted ears.

Why is he grinning so smugly?:
Well, apparently, he's the coolest, awesomest dude ever. And to be truthful, he pretty much is. He's very good with the ladies, if they're in to that bad boy sort of stuff. I mean, he has a Mohawk for goodness sake! What's not awesome about that? The point is, is that he's flipping epic! And it's hard not to smile if people think of you like that, and the way he's smiling right now, that's just how he smiles naturally. He can't actually smile normally, he just does a little grin. Which, admittingly, is cooler than smiling normally.

well, north star had alway been that type of jbd that older jbds would say "kids these days" about him.
so this year he said "psshha" with the naughty list and dicided he would lie to all of the baby jbd's that santa wasn't real (which he is )and ruin all their dreams.he took it to himself that it sounded funny.the next day a young jbd asked him if santa was real an he said "NO" and was smiling like that for the rest of the day being very pleased with himself.

Why is he grinning so smugly?:
Well this goes for all caracals but I've always pictured those lovely wild cats completely egotistical , condescending and narcissistic <3 just the way i love them. In this case , I would say him being based off me is smirking at the look of his friends face as he asks her to define repertoire , dubious , condensing , narcissistic then spell them all. In my opinion I've pictured them to be quiet intellectually educated this being the reason he should be grinning oh so smugly.
