Equid name: Phillia
Equid age: 3
Phillia loped across the soft meadow grass. She loved to come to the grassy spot by the pond to watch
the clouds or smell the wild roses that grew nearby. Sometimes Charm (Phillia’s best friend) would
come along, but Today Phillia went alone. Phillia sighed contentedly, letting the breeze blow through
her fur. The wild roses look especially pretty today, Phillia thought as she trotted over to see them.
When Phillia inhaled the roses fragrant aroma, something Glinted in the sun from within the bush. “Oh,
what’s that?” thought Phillia aloud, as she observed the object closer. It was a bluish stone mounted in
White gold and hanging on a silver chain. Phillia looked it over carefully, and then slipping it around her
neck she started back towards the rest of the equids humming softly, Before Phillia reached the rest of
the herd she stopped to get a drink at the stream near the strawberry patch. “I wish some of the
strawberrys would ripen;” Phillia Stated quietly. All of a sudden the stone in the necklace began to glow
and ripe red strawberrys appeared on the opposite side of the bank of the narrow stream! Phillia looked
at necklace then back at the strawberrys in surprise. “It must be magic,” She whispered, “I will never tell
anyone about this,” Phillia promised. When Phillia got back the spot on the mountain where the herd
was grazing Charm rushed to meet her. “Hey Phillia!” Said Charm, “Wanna go berry hunting with me? I
just found the best berry spot ever! ”okay,” replied Phillia, and the two fillys jogged off together. “It’s
the strangest thing, wild summer strawberrys in the middle of spring,” Charm said, and got a mouthful
of the delicious berries. Phillia smiled, knowing well how the strawberrys got there. Suddenly a
startled mountain goat ran out from the brush, ramming into a very startled Charms rear! The goat ran
off into the bushes. Charm was knocked off her feet and lying on the ground .“Are you okay?”, asked
Phillia quickly; “I guess,” mumbled Charm, who was still in a daze. Charm got up off the ground. “I think I
twisted my ankle.” She groaned and started limping back to the rest of the herd with Phillia.
The next Morning Phillia headed off to the pond by herself. Phillia looked at her reflection in the
ponds glassy surface, she had nearly forgotten about the necklace, until she noticed it in the
reflection. A doe and her fawn drank by the water’s edge, birds sang in the pines and butterflies flew
past
with brilliant colors. I love spring, she thought. Phillia lay by the
pond, her tail dipping slightly into the clear water. Phillia was shy, and gently spirited, but when she saw
a need she was much bolder than most. A robin awkwardly hopped nearby where Phillia was. The birds
wing looked badly injured. I wonder if I can help this poor robin with my magic necklace, thought
Phillia. I wish this bird could be healed. The necklace began to glow and in a few seconds the bird flew
away, singing merrily as it went! The stones magic had healed the bird completely. Phillia hurried back
to the rest of the equids, her deer-like hooves seeming to float over the mountain paths. Phillia rushed
over to Charm, who was grazing with the rest of the herd making sure to keep her weight off the
wounded ankle. “Hi Phillia,” said Charm over a mouthful of grass . I wish Charm’s ankle would heal.
thought Phillia “hey, uh what are you doing?” asked Charm. The stone started glowing again, “how does
your ankle feel? inquired Phillia, ignoring Charms previous question. “It feels better,” Charm responded.
“Try walking on it, “said Phillia “Alright,” Charm took a step, expecting sharp pain but received none.
“Hey, The pains gone!”, exclaimed Charm excitedly. Phillia smiled. Charm and Phillia decided to walk to
the base of the mountain together. I think I will Wish for a crystal rose to give to charm, thought
Phillia. Phillia knew how much Charm loved crystal roses and how hard they were to find. I wish a
crystal rose would bloom right here, she thought. Nothing happened. “That should have worked,”
whispered Phillia, “I’ll try on something else. “I wish a river would flow through here.” again nothing
occurred. Charm was quite a ways ahead and impatient to get to the bottom of the mountain. “ C’mon
Phillia! What’s the hold up?” called Charm. Phillia caught up with Charm and they moved on.
The next month Phillia headed towards her hangout by the pond. “I think I’ll try out my necklace
again.” She said and seeing a tree stump by the water, she thought to herself I wish this old stump
would become a magnificent, strong, blossoming tree. Just before the magic began to work, and the
stone started to glow Phillia was startled by a voice from behind, “What are you doing?” Phillia wheeled
her head around to see Charm standing behind her looking at the stone around her neck. Phillia
reluctantly
told Charm the story of the necklace and its powers, but only after she had made Charm promise never
to tell anyone else. “Why don’t you wish that you could fly then? asked Charm “That would be wasting
a wish” said Phillia “I only get 3 a month.”
Months passed and Phillia spent all her wishes on helping other creatures. She hadn’t even
spent one wish on herself. Sometimes Phillia thought she could feel someone watching her and almost
hear them disappear into the woods. Only Phillia and Charm knew of the necklaces power. “Let’s go
down to the glade together to collect some buttercups,” suggested Phillia, her silky black tobiano fur
blowing in the breeze. “Alright” agreed Charm excitedly switching her lion-like tail. “Race you there!”
Charm cried and raced off, Phillia galloping daintily behind. The two Equids soon reached the glade and
were gathering buttercups and talking together. “How many more wishes do you have?” Charm
asked quietly “Only one.” Was her answer. Charms Grey coat shone in the afternoon sun looking as soft
as velvet. A rustle came from the bushes, and a large grey wolf leaped out, smiling cruelly at the fillys
frightened faces. “Who are you?” asked Charm defiantly. “I am Stark, the Pack leader of the wolves of
the northern forests.” “I know all about you and your magical stone” The wolf said to her with his, dark
yellow eyes staring into Phillia’s own blue ones. Stark circled the fillys, who stood closely together.
“What do you
want?” asked Charm boldly “You know very well what I desire.” Stark replied. “I can’t give you my
stone, I use it to help the creatures of the mountain,” said Phillia firmly. Stark let out a laugh, a cold,
bone chilling laugh that made both the young equids shiver. Phillia
and Charm looked at each other and ran. They had darted into the trees. Night had fallen and Phillia and
Charm were starting to tire, but the full moon was out and lit their paths ahead. Suddenly Starks form
appeared out from the shadows, he had been following Phillia and Charm through the evergreen
woods and had finally caught up. “So, have you changed your minds yet?” Stark asked, almost as if he
was talking to a pair of naughty children. “No,” Phillia answered. Phillia, Charm, and Stark stood near the
rocky ledge of a cliff. Phillia and Charm were trapped. “Hand over the necklace.” said Stark calmly.
Phillia was just taking it off when CRRRRRRRRRACK!!! The rock ledge Stark was standing on broke,
sending Stark tumbling into the depths of the canyon below. Stark cried out. Phillia watched in horror,
she hated to see even the worst of creatures injured. Before Charm could stop her Phillia galloped to the
l
edge of the ravine and peered in. Phillia saw Stark lying on a rock ledge some distance below her,
motionless. Phillia carefully picked her way down to the shelf, Phillia knew even the stones magic could
not bring someone back to life. He’s breathing, thought Phillia in relief. Phillia made the choice right
then; I wish Stark would live. Phillia thought. The stones glow cast a soft light on Starks face. Slowly
Stark rose to his feet, his eyes looked strangely different, the cruel spark was gone from them. “You
saved me,” He said his voice not much above a whisper. “But why would you spend your last wish on a
wolf like me?”, asked Stark confused by this act of kindness. Phillia just smiled. The three walked back to
the herd on the mountain, Stark apologizing many times along the way. Sometimes Stark would come
to visit when he was coming by the mountain on hunts and wolf events and he was always welcome
by Phillia and Charm. “I wouldn’t have spent my wish on him,” Charm admitted. Phillia just laughed.
Phillia even made a wish that the stone would never be used for evil. To this day, Phillia the stone to
help others.
The End
