finding the crystal hadnt honestly been that difficult, when you think about it, compared to actually trying to get the thing in the first place, little alone get it out. sure, they had to go through a few mountains, past some forests, make their way through a few meadows, and fend off a dragon or two and a few shadow monsters, but in the end, they did manage to find the crystal..
..perched neatly inside the highest swoop of the crown of a very big, very large queen dragon's sleeping head. the other dragons must've been babies compared to this thing-- it was huge. bright, fiery red scales and spikes and thorns everywhere--it looked like nothing short of a flaming, spiky death trap.
just the sight of the arch of the dragon's back, the large swoosh of its tail, the length of its teeth and horns, was enough to make anybody want to flee in terror. however, you had a mission to accomplish--get the crystal and get out alive.
you tiptoe cautiously around the cavern's walls, back pressed against rock while margaret and eden took the other side, prepared to use magic against the dragon if it woke up. while they were doing that, you carefully hiked up the dragons back, taking great caution to pause every few seconds to make sure it didnt wake. you really didnt look forward to being a dragons dinner today.
you somehow (you really dont know how you even got up here without kicking the thing away honestly) get all the way up to its head, but the real challenge is still ahead. if you thought climbing up a dragon was bead, try getting a gigantic crown off of an even bigger dragon's head. yeah, not happening.
you communicate this to your party members, and they soon realize your plight. there is absolutely no way you're getting this down there without help, and no definite way you're getting it down quietly.
you step back, trying to think, when all of the sudden a bright light illuminates the dark corner you're in and you cling onto the dragon's neck by a particularly large spike sticking out from where it's spine would be under all that skin and muscle. you're kind of freaking out because who the heck shot the dragon while you were on it but you dont get time to think much more--the queen lifts her head with a mighty roar befitting of draconian royalty and swings her tail low, knocking margaret and eden back into the cavern's walls. it opens its jaws and snaps its teeth in a warning of whats to come, and you watch in horror as margaret and eden just barely dodge another swish of the queen's tail.
you are utterly helpless and have no way to aid your friends, and this giant lizard looks about ready to spit flames out of its mouth.
you, in a split second moment of stupidity, try to get its attention by kicking it in the side of its neck, and for what it's worth, it does work, but now you're being jostled around haphazardly and nearly thrown off from a height you dont want to think about.
maggie is just completely panicking (you think she might be crying too) and eden is doing you dont even know what. she looks like she's lining up her wand to, what you really, really hope, is at least try to shoot the crown off the queen's head because that is what you came for and you rather they at least get it down instead of trying to pull the impossible and rescue you right now.
another glowing beam shoots off from eden's wand, and you hold on tight, trying to brace yourself as it hits the queen right in the forehead. the crown, however, goes unmoved. you though, you can feel your palms slipping. your fingers are trying to hold on as best they can, but they wont hold on much longer. they kinda need to hurry the heck up down there, or you might actually die.
"a little faster, please!" you say, worry clear in your voice. you hope you get a darn good payment for all this trouble, and, you know, almost dying.
"working on it, miss hofferson!" eden retorts, shooting off another bolt. it manages to loosen the crown, but you also feel the effects, and go tumbling to the ground. luckily, it seems maggie decided to use a cloud potion and create a nice, comfy landing for you to fall on. less luckily, your leg hurts like you broke it regardless of the protective cloud cushion and honestly it feels like your stomach is up there with your brain, and your heart's goofing around in your gut, because you feel really really breathless and you arent sure your chest is supposed to hurt that much.
"ow..." you groan, rubbing at the side of your head. this is gonna take forever to heal, and even longer to get everyone off your back about it when they do see you, sporting a lovely assortment of injuries.
"wiyby! goodness--i-im, im so sorry--i didnt know that would happen--the guy said it would be here but--" she's stressed and panicky, so you reach up to hold her hand like you usually do and wordlessly tell her it's okay.
"im fine, you're fine, eden's fine--" you start, but she quickly lets go of you to whip around and see eden with her own set of bruises and various cuts. she runs over with her bag, already pulling out potions, and you wobble after her, axe in one hand and the other helping hold up.
you arent so sure the three of you can do this, but there really isnt another option, is there?
the battle takes forever, and after just fighting off a ton of shadowy monsters in that one guy's tavern, you're kind of angry you and your party members are already injured again, but you guess that's the price one pays for adventure in this weird little kingdom.
eden is busy somewhere else, probably trying to find help or something, you'd take a guess, and maggie is trying to patch you and herself up to the best of her abilities until the three of you can get to town again.
you lie your head down on your satchel and try to get some rest while you can.
