Name: Mayati [May - Ah - Tee]
Story:I remember that awful day I woke up, the sky was clear, its colors shifting as the day dragged, and no wind stirred. I was besides my father, taking my daily nap in the comfortable darkness of my den.. With a stretch, I pushed my legs against his stomach playfully, and with a smile he licked my head. You could say I am a ‘daddy’s girl’. He never gets angry with me and I am allowed to do more around him than my mother would let me, but I love them both just the same. I continued to bat around at him, but he’d merely smile and lay his head back on his paws to sleep. When I also was about to resume cuddling up by his side to sleep, his head shot up and he looked outside. Curious, I peered to the direction he was facing and I heard a loud cry. Even from the distance from the den you could see a few warriors fighting a Kronador, and even make out a bit of a red coating that was on the blue foliage. It was obviously blood, but I didn’t bother pointing the obvious out to father. Without a thought he stood, and looked into my eyes. “Whatever you do, do not leave this den” he said, eyes nervous. “Do you understand me?” I hesitated, his voice sounded pretty demanding, but I quickly nodded, and without a word he had stormed out of the den and to the action.
What now? All I could do was pace the den, the battle had moved farther as they chased that horrible beast away. Night quickly shrouded the skies soon after, and I began to get more curious. And no matter what my mind told me to do, I forced myself to stay and huddled into a corner. I was cold, lonely, and desperate for someone to talk to, or even just a being to look at at this point. Before I even knew it, my eyes slid shut and peace came to me finally. Once the skies lightened, I stood, stumbling to the den’s entrance with a yawn and a frown to accompany it. Father wasn't anywhere in the den, and it appeared that no one was in the nearby area. Sadly, I did the right thing, staying where I was told and hoped he would return soon. Every horrifying thought hit my mind, wondering if he was slaughtered, got lost, or died. All of them were possibilities; he would have come back sooner if it was an easy fight. At last, I could see a familiar figure arriving close enough for me to see him, but his head was hung low and the closer he got, the more upset he seemed. When he made it into the den, he didn’t even bother to stop and look at me. Father just went to the end of our sleeping area and fell over, staring at the wall. I blinked, my curiosity was eating at me and I felt invisible. Padding to him, I plopped by his side, looking into his round, wet eyes. Tears ran down his face. I wondered why. “Father, why are you crying?” I asked with a tilt to my head. No response. It made me angry; I took a deep breath and looked to him a little more harshly. “Mama will be upset that your just laying on the floor all sulky” I taunted and noticed his eyes shift to me, the tears increasing. “Listen… May…” he began, words barely making it from his mouth. “Your Mama… She… She is dead…” I froze, and looked to him, eyes widened, my heart pounding. This had to be a joke; my mom was strong and fierce, not the warrior who would go down so easily. “Haha Father. Good one, you know Ma doesn’t like you joking that way” I snickered, forcing my expression into one of amusement in attempt not to cry. He slowly shook his head, and didn’t reply a word to me after that. He was clearly serious; the grief in his face made that clear. Finally, I began to sob, digging my face into his fluffy pelt and we cried together for the rest of that day, not even bothering to get food.
As the days went on from there, things began to get much worse. My father never spoke, and stayed in the same spot, just crying. I had to ask other wolves to help me get food during those days and I couldn’t get father to eat a bite. The others understood my problem though. And as his depression got worse, my heart broke more, it was just awful to see him like this, he was even losing some weight. After a week straight of this, I couldn’t take it anymore; the ignorance, the depression, and the hunger. Neither of us could live like this for too much longer and I wouldn’t stand for it at all. Getting to my feet, I darted out of the cave and headed to the large blue field I remember seeing the fight at. Stopping, my gaze hit the floor, expecting to see blood, but all that was there was the soft blue grass. It was hard to believe this is where my mother was killed, it was so lovely. I had to force myself to look away and head towards the next spot I remember the battle moving too, but I didn’t know much after that. A few pups that saw me running off had curious glances, and the looks got more nervous the farther I got. They even scrambled and ran off. Making it to a wooded area, I looked around, hoping to find the very beast that dared to kill my mother. I specifically remember one feature on this Kronador, one of his horns was broken, if I was seeing things correctly that day. Even with knowing this information, I’d have to get very lucky to just find him here, so I went further and further, hiding from each Kronador I passed. I guess I am just lucky, but some would stop to sniff around. My eyes slid around, everything was quiet and the foliage was getting thinner, I kept cover in a bush.
Finally! The beast I was searching for was feasting on some creature of which I didn’t bother identifying, though, even if I tried I really couldn’t tell what it was since he had grinded and tore it apart. I shuttered, feeling a bit nauseous watching him eat at it, his face covered in its blood. Now, let’s see, I found him, but I wasn’t smart enough to think of what to do next. Yeah, sure, I figured I’d kill it, but he is MUCH bigger in person. I began to sit, but I got stiff when my movement made the bush rustle along with it and froze. The Kronador blinked, looking directly at where I made the sound. With a rough, crackled laughed he peeked into the bush, his face butting me out of it. Horrified, I stared into his eyes, fearing for my life. I instantly began to think he was just going to eat me, but he seemed to just be messing with me at the moment. With his forehand, he pushed me away from the bush and against a tree. “Why, hello tiny, watcha doin so far from home aye?” he snickered, his claw at my throat. I swallowed, air gathering in my lungs and I released it all in the form of a yell. “You killed my mother you dirty monster!” The Kronador blinked, tilting his head with a sly smile, he pushed his claw closer to my neck. He snickered once more at this point. “Aww, well, that’s harsh, I am certainly not dirty” he insisted, playfully rolling his eyes. Beginning to shiver, tears rolled down my face, and I sniffled, flashing back to the recent days, surprised that not too long ago my life was perfect and I was going to lose all of it so young. That’s when I heard a loud, angered howl and a figure busted from the bushes, under the Kronador, his teeth gripping its stomach, and he tore skin from the beast. The Kronador yelled, pushing me aside, glaring at the attacker, my Father. My eyes watered, he snapped out of it! I wonder what got to him, or how he knew I was here, now that I begun to think of it, but I merely just began to cry, tail tucked between my legs in fear. Father’s eyes looked like fire, his glare was harsh at the Kronador. “You may have taken my mate, but if you dare take my pup, I will make you fall to the floor begging to die.” He growled, leaping once forth, taking a bite at the Kronador’s neck. The beast yelled once more, lashing its claws into my Father’s face and with a yelp he began to continue the fight. It seemed like a repetition of attacks, but then more figures appeared. My eyes were grateful that it was allies and quickly they launched at the beast as well, the four of them took it down. My Father made the final attack at the neck.
Instantly, Father ran to me, nuzzling his face into mine and his tears made me wet. “I am really sorry for what I did to you, it will never happen again” he cried, grabbing me by the scruff, following the other Warrior’s back home. A smile climbed to my face, my eyes still wet and I looked up to him. This trip was all worth it in the end, but I am just glad none of us died, but the warriors did get a bit beat up. When we returned home, many faces came to greet us, asking questions. But Father carried me back to our den, setting me down and curling around me, nuzzling me with his nose. I laid also, and dug my face into his fur happily. We were finally happy again, able to live our lives before, I am sure that’s what Mama would have wanted after all, so we better fulfill that wish. And maybe tomorrow we’d play, laugh, and get something to eat, as we used to do. I looked at him, we were both still watery eyed and we both had soft looks for each other. “I love you Father” I said, snuggling against him, my eyes shutting for sleep.
A tear fell down his nose and as he laid his head down next to mine, he replied;
“I love you too, my little Mayati”
