All of the cats huddled together in the central hub of their camp, most now sopping wet. Crow and Tinderpaw’s garden excursion had been cut short by the unseasonably early storm brewing, and Crow spat with irritation as he shook the water from his short coat. Tinderpaw didn't pay him much mind however, and the herbs he had collected fell from his jaws as he gasped in horror, seeing Skyfire dragging back the limp purple body of Dove. “Oh no!” He exclaimed, “What happened?”
“We got caught in the storm,” Sky huffed, looking frazzled. “Dove fell in the water. Can you help?”
Crow muscled his way in from outside, looking down at Dove as she gasped for breath. “Tsk,” he muttered. “Poor dear. Get her somewhere warm so she can dry off, we don’t want her getting pneumonia.” he advised brusquely, flicking his tail at Tinderpaw to direct him to assist.
Tinder shot him a subtle dirty look, but eagerly jumped to help support Dove as she wobbled to her feet and helped her stumble all the way to one of the beds in the medicine den.
It was later when Tinder was helping to groom Dove, sitting with them and offering comfort after the events of the previous day. They seemed embarrassed and almost a little ashamed, and he offered a concerned look. “Do you want to talk about it?"
He asked, “I won’t judge.”
Dove sighed softly, before reluctantly beginning to speak. “It was going so well, Sky was teaching me to fish… Then the storm came, and I saw a cat drowning in the water. I guess- I guess I wanted to be a hero, but I ended up just being a fool. Jumped in and tried to save them, but… They didn’t make it.” Her ears twitched as she winced in remembrance.
Tinder paused and thought in silence for a while, before mewing “Well, maybe it didn’t work out, but… That makes you very brave. Not every cat would try to help a stranger like that. It's admirable.”
Dove looked at him curiously with her multicolored eyes before smiling. “Thank you. That’s awfully kind of you to say. I just feel bad because now I'm relying on even more of your he-” they were cut off by a nasty cough, and Tinderpaw cringed.
“It’s not too kind if it’s true. Here, you should chew on this- it’s good for colds, and I don’t want you getting more sick.” He offered Dove a sprig of watermint, which they gratefully accepted.
Skyfire poked morosely at the plump fish in front of her, unable to find the appetite to eat when she would normally wolf down any food. She looked up quickly when she heard a gentle mrrow from behind, seeing a pale brown spotted cat sliding up beside her.
“Why the long face, hm?” Doefoot chirped.
Sky sighed softly, trying to save face in front of her younger clanmate. “Nothing, really…”
Doe chuckled, sitting herself down beside the older she-cat. “Come on, be honest. You’re normally so chipper.
What’s getting you down?”
Sky thought about it for a while, before sighing again and answering. “I feel bad, I feel like I led Dove into danger yesterday. Maybe I was a little too eager to teach someone, I didn't see the storm forming…” Internally, perhaps she felt that she had failed in her duty to protect the young.
Doe frowned, brushing over Sky’s back with a paw sympathetically. “Oh, you shouldn’t blame yourself for that- Dove is a big girl! She can make her own decisions- such as trying to save another cat I hear, very brave~” she purred.
Sky hummed thoughtfully, “I suppose you’re right. I just… feel like I need to do more.”
Doefoot stood up with a bounce, twitching her stubby tail. “Well, if you need something to take your mind off things, you should come along with me! Let’s go for a walk. Surely that will be more productive than you sitting here moping.” She fluttered her eyelids bashfully with a cheeky smile. “I’m dying to get out of camp anyway- I’ve been cooped up in here for ages because of the rain, not wanting to get my fur wet after all.”
Skyfire blinked at her rapidly, somewhat blindsided by the burst of energy. Still, she supposed Doe was right. It would indeed be better to go out on patrol, to take her mind off things. “Alright,” she nodded in agreement, “You lead the way.”
