Vulkhanalu, Lu for short:Prompt: ...
Lunamaek, sector Q-8053--Deep space... Well, really. What part of space isn't deep? Anyway, my planet is light years away from this... Eearth of yours. Much like your planet, my home is split into several distinct ecosystems with ranging in heat, cold and of course the spore season. Hm? Whats that? Spore season is very similar to your idea of summer. You see, most of the planet isn't your usual foliage of ferns, trees, flowers and grass. Most of my home is actually a form of fungal life. Mushrooms! But not your little cute, eatable buttons like the things you have here.
My planet has grass like qualities on the ground, however it's not grass. They're small, worm like creatures. Very flexible, no bone structure and all their organs are safe below ground so if you step on one, it's no biggy! They're so sweet too! Truthfully though, our ground is mostly dirt, not nearly as complicated as your Earth is. Very few flowers exist outside of groves; though some choose to form in our crystal structures.
--My planet orbits a twin blue sun system and has three moons to speak of, fairly small ones compared to yours. With two suns, or plant doesn't have a day and night cycle like Earth. It feels more like a constant, blue dusk year round with the exception of spore season when the sky is blocked with clouds. Animals sleep when tired, no eight hour rests daily or hibernations for the most part.
--During spore season, we among other animals live underground for most of the day to avoid choking or ending up dead. Those tribes that manage to live in the safety of the groves are lucky to be in a place not effected by them.
And that is mostly it. We have oceans with fish and shellfish, we have insects small and large as well as underground grown foods like nuts or certain vegetables. Though, I might need to bring a few seeds back home and see if we can grow this wonderful fruit you have here! I doubt apples will survive outside of grove territory though; so sad...
Our people, our cultureI hail from a very ancient group of kalons who worship the creator, Lunivae. She is the goddess of time and change, the said creator of our planet and one of the original gods to inhabit our home. While not a very popular goddess to worship, my people have believed in the sign of the moth since the beginning of our time. It was she who gave me the gift of space manipulation, the power of creation. All the gods, unlike yours, wander our world in the forms of animals or insects in her case.
Each kalon has been bred down and genetically inherits powers your kind would call magic. However, when a successor is chosen to become King or Queen of their tribe, the chosen god they worship bestows a special power upon them to prepare the tribe for the future. If you haven't caught on yet, I'm next in line to lead my people into the future generation. I didn't believe in my worth at the time, but my experience on Earth has made me feel otherwise. The purge never seemed like a solid reason for me to be leader, not when many other kalons died by my lack of talent...
Oh, yes, the purge. I suppose I should explain. Each tribe consists of ten to two hundred kalons; though a number so high is said to bring great misfortune onto the tribe. As a population control, the five gods of creation come together every hundred years and bring a terrible sickness on the land. My powers, my true powers, are a distant gift from the God of Whispers, Yunaki. I have the power of hearing plants, the quiet voices they send through their roots as they communicate with one another. The powers they have, the poisons they contain, the pain they feel... It's a haunting power to always hear voices, but I've become a powerful healer as a result.
Every kalon has a power they are born with, mine was just so powerful compared to others I'd spoken with. During the purge of illness, I was able to prevent many lives from being lost in my tribe and despite being marked a traitor by some, the lives of smaller tribes nearby. Many still died, but only thirty of my own were lost, mostly the elderly and weak. I suppose Lunivae saw something in me, because our queen named me her successor and our goddess came to me with the gift. Though getting your powers before your trail is never a good sign... I suppose you'd like to hear the real story now.
This is embarrassing, but please be forgiving! I didn't write this, but the minor god of literature, Quil. All the trials are written in history, I tell the story and he retells it as he sees fit. My time on Earth was... Amazing. Just know that. ☼The Trial of Earth☼"The eternal has spoken. With the wind you must travel to a world of color and light. A planet that knows only change with beings who only walk the line creation and destruction. Learn from them, about them and yourself. Return only when you've come to understand the limits of creation and the power time holds over mortal beings."
...
A pink kalon, short in stature and bleeding life awoke to a pair of beautiful blue eyes staring back at her. Jerking backwards and stumbling on her delicate paws, her eyes widen with panic as a star speckled cloud swirls and twists around her body. Not sure where she was, who she was or what was happening, she let out yelps of fear as the dust engulfing her thins and fades into nothing. What happened? The smoke was gone and she could now clearly see a bright orange creator standing before her; looking concerned and a little scared.
"W-what!? It's rude to stare!" The pink kalon chirps defensively. At this comment, the other being's face changes into a look of surprise and then amusement. A smile cracks across the strangers face and she lets out a light laugh. Sitting back and rubbing her eyes, the orange being stares back with a bright smile plastered to her beautiful face.
"I suppose it is! I've just never seen something quite like you before! Where did you come from? What was that lovely stardust surrounding your pelt earlier? So many questions!" She seemed young, eager and a bit naïve, but also kind. There was something about her that felt true and trustworthy, but there wasn't much to tell. The questions rose only blank space in her brain, like she had no memory of her past life. A whisper rises in the back of her head, but the voice is her own.
"My... Name is... Lu. I can't answer anything else though. Seems I can't recall where I've been or where I'm going." Lu stutters, rubbing her head and half heartedly checking for wounds. She didn't feel any lumps, bumps or dried blood like one would expect when suffering memory loss. Her mind wasn't completely empty however, she could recall many miscellaneous medical procedures and wild plant life; but nothing around her seemed familiar. How was it she knew what mushrooms would settle an upset stomach but looking at the bright red fruit above her head was... Very foreign. "Where am I?"
The orange kalon tilts her head for a moment, as if processing what Lu was saying. "You're in central Japan near my temple. My name is Tabitha, Goddess of Fire and hope, leader of our village. It's a great honor to meet you Lu; though I must say I expected a demigod to have a much more complicated name." She chirps in a cheerful tone, turning to the two villagers in her company. "Finish gathering the apples please, I'll send another to replace me." Gesturing for Lu to follow as she heads off in another direction. Gathering herself, Lu follows quickly.
"What do you mean demigod? I'm like you? How can you tell? Do I have powers or something?" Questions swirled through her mind like light through space. What was Japan? She knew what temples were and villages, even the word leader made perfect sense to her. It felt strange knowing so much but so little all at once...
"Well, yes and no. I'm a full fledged god, so I can use several powers within my limits while you seem... Locked somehow. The strange star speckled dust around your pelt when you first arrived was a giveaway to several things. Not to mention you more or less just popped out of thin air, dear. No mortal just teleports from one place to another." The flame colored kalon explains, giving a careful look over her shoulder as the distance between herself and her followers grows. Her tone becomes hushed, Lu walking close beside her. "You didn't come from this world either, but lets keep that between you and me. The powers you have are not your own and don't belong to any god of this area. So lets catch you up quickly so the others don't become panicked." Tabby suggests, glancing at the small, pink bundle to check if she was following.
Her three eyes were wide, confused and almost panicked herself but... She knew if she was going to get help or learn about where she came from, she needed all the help she could get. Taking a deep breath, she nods. "Very well. I'll try to come up with a story for myself if I can. Though clearly I cannot be from... Japan either. Great fell I need..." It was now, she noticed a satchel around her shoulder. It seemed to crafted from some kind of vine and contained just what she needed. A notebook and a scribe. There were several pages of sketches, mostly mushrooms and strange looking animals with a few notes here and there. Making a mental note to read over the clues past her left herself, she flips to a blank page and jots down that she knows so far. "Continue."
Nodding, Tabitha rests against a nearby stump and begins to explain their world. Earth, seasons, rain and surrounding areas. Land masses all kept apart by large bodies of water, oceans, and wars waged between the simple minded for whomever had the most control. It was easy to fill a page with information, Earth was very complicated for her only needed the most common knowledge. She felt like she'd hardly learned the half of it when they started walking again. "But it's very important nobody knows about other worlds. You'll be cut apart before you're even allowed to explain yourself. Fear rules the life forms here more than anything else and overflowing them with solved mysteries only makes things worse. They're primitive still, but with your powers not working I wouldn't test your luck against my numbers."
"Being afraid never did anyone any good, but I suppose I understand. Perhaps with the way I look I should introduce myself as a god like you? Here on business of sorts; it would explain my sudden appearance and the way I look without seeming too farfetched. Judging by the interest in pleasing angry gods and offering different things to avoid such wrath... I am the goddess of disease and spores, here to evaluate the land and its people to decide when the cleansing should be spread." Something to fear, but also something to embrace and work with. If they were nice, she would spare them another hundred years of sickness. Seemed logical, and Tabitha very hesitantly agreed.
---
Once settled in the temple, the villagers set up a room in worship hall for her as temporary housing during her stay. The room had been decorated with pelts, mushrooms, nightshade and charcoal to honor her powers. Her simple name? It didn't translate into their language, so Lu would do just fine much like Tabitha. She was given a feast with fine sake, entertainment and a night of dancing. The torches burned bright and danced with them, changing colors and flickering with a life she didn't know them to have. It was beautiful to see how much these mortals cared about flashy, enticing performance.
When morning came, she was awoken by Tabitha and invited to help gather from the gardens today. Learning about how handle the daily labors of their life made it easier for her to gather notes on how things worked. Teams made work easier, some objects couldn't be carried by a single soul and the land was surprisingly hard to work with. Many hills, wetlands and strange animals about. Within days she was well voiced in common speech, able to mend the wounds and cure fevers with plants of Earth and found herself settling in rather well.
While strange for a supposed goddess of disease, she was very good with identifying and treating disease. Lu become rather popular and Tabby took notice of it. After about two weeks, the two started spending more time together and looking into where she might have come from. Notes from her journal were mostly little blurbs about the kinds of foliage on her home planet, apparently called Lunamaek. The towering life compared to what was on Earth it would seem; at least in Japan.
"So, anything coming to mind? We have your planet's name, the environment you lived in and this drawing of a moth." The two sat close together under a cherry blossom tree; though it was past blooming season and was a lush green currently. Tabitha was leaning over the smaller kalon's shoulder, eyeing the many little drawings she had.
"Bits and pieces. I know I was in line to be the next queen, I was a healer and something important send me here. I must figure out something before I can return, but what I need alludes me still." Looking down at her paw, Lu's eyes tighten with focus. A small plume of purple stardust forms around her claws and rises like smoke. The colorful dust waves around her a moment, engulfing her whole paw before fading out. "It has something to do with my powers, I can hear the plants whisper about me now... There's more to this than I want there to be."
Tabby lets out a loud yawn, leaning back against the tree. "Well, if you were given your demigod powers and send here before becoming leader, it sounds like you're supposed to be learning something. Nobody can become a king or queen without passing some kind of test. With new abilities comes the chance of setting loose some killing machine, we have to be careful handing out abilities." Suppressing her own horrid memories of getting her fire under control, she sighs heavily. "What are some weaknesses you have?" Lu thought for a moment, only pieces of her life really fitting together so far. "I can hardly recognize my own language much less figure out what some god wants me to do." Letting out a light sigh of defeat, she looks at the diagram of the mushrooms against the sunrise, running a finger over the chicken scratch of language. "Doubting myself for one, I can't trust myself to make a sound choice. Uh, being queen of a whole tribe sounds like a lot of pressure for someone who isn't sure they even want to lead." A familiar feeling of guilt runs down her spine as recalls a great blue moth blocking the sunlight. "I don't think she made the right choice... Lunivae knows I'm not ready." The vision in her mind fades, leaving an ache in her head.
Tabby perks up a little, looking at Lu with great interest. "Lunivae? You haven't mentioned that name before! Another breakthrough?" Her blue eyes were comforting, a feeling that felt as foreign as her own locked memories. It'd only been a month in Earth time, but the people who lived here, and Tabitha most of all, made her feel relaxed. Shaking out of her thoughts, Lu looks down at her journal and begins flipping through some of the older pages.
A drawing of a black moth sits plain as day on the very first page. It's great black wings seem to stretch over the landscape, with the name in her head and the words she'd spoken before... This was her Goddess, the one who gave her the powers of a demigod. "Lunivae! Yes, she's the god my tribe worships. I remember her speaking with me about becoming the next queen and... My powers." She wished she could control them, but even with three eyes she was blind on what to do. In spite of her newfound information, Lu wanted to stop thinking about where she came for for a second. Tabby was always good at pushing her to focus, but the summer breeze was too relaxing to get a headache over. "The mission can wait another afternoon, I'm sure what I need to do will come to me in time." The small kalon stretches and leans into the bright orange fluff beside her.

The harsh season on Earth brought it's own unbearable struggles; though the locals still persisted forward. Harvest was not possible outside, though it appeared Tabitha used her powers of flame to heat a special room for winter harvest. Not much grew there, but enough to keep stock from failing. Lu had taken liberty of planting a few herbs before the frost took out the best of them; having heard some buzz of common sickness. Apparently, not everyone dies in winter but the cold weakens the young and old against many illnesses that take place over that particular time.
Running her paws over the several rows of irreplaceable, life giving herbs, she hears them whisper happy thoughts about being safe from the cold and bitter frost. They spoke softly to the other plants, but sometimes she was unable to understand their hushed voices over all the hustle usually around the greenhouse. Stepping away from the plant box, she sees Tabby standing in a circle of villagers with a serious look on her face. Putting on her 'godly' persona, she quietly approaches, only able to catch the last few passing words.
"Grandmother Kui has lasted many winters before this, I'm sure she will pull through." The goddess of flames spoke, but her eyes were clouded with worry. Lu had held back from saying anything, but being so drawn to another person was strange to her... It made her feel more aware of what Tabby was feeling; and more importantly, it made her want to help ease such pains.
The two villagers simply bowed, but the third shared the same look of concern. "This is a strong sickness, I pray you are right." Before bowing with the others and moving away. The beautiful Goddess sported a long, emerald green dress today with her usual gold jewels and rings. Her earrings were fire opals carved into hanging butterflies, making Lu's heart flutter at the glimmer that accented her eyes.
"What's happening?" The small kalon whispers, not making eye contact as she stares after the group. Keeping their alone time minimal as to avoid... Giving the wrong idea to the villagers. She was supposed to be the bad guy after all; bringing death and sickness to the world or something. The two only spent nights together now, when the temple was empty of wandering eyes and ears.
Shaking her head, Tabby turns to the shimmering pink fluff ball beside her. For only a second, she admired the deep purple robes she'd been given. They made her look a bit like a child getting ready for the festival! Though now was no time to celebrate... "One of our wisest elders has fallen very ill. She has the usual fever and cough, but our curing remedies aren't having any effect and now she's been complaining her limbs are locking up. I fear age will be her downfall and... She'll fail to see another season." Tabitha sighs, wishing the sight of her friend was more enlightening. "She's been here since before I was cast out of the skies and banished here over forty years ago. It'll be very hard on everyone..."
Her ears flick up, visions of the sick in her own tribe flashing through her mind like pictures. She could see the elderly soaking their old bones, massages they use to give warriors after a hard battle, scented smoke used to clear breathing pathways... Lu saw herself sitting among them in healer attire, smiling with kind confidence as she tended to them. Blinking through the memories, she flashes back to reality only to see a lack of surprise in Tabby's eyes. Feeling a little self conscious, she avoids eye contact and plays with her fingers.
"Oof, have all these episodes become to regular?" Lu asks nervously, only to hear a chuckle in response.
"I don't know why'd you'd ask. You tend to have at least three a week now; I'm impressed you haven't figured out your way home by now." Giving her a sympathetic look, Tabby clears her throat and straightens out again. "What is your vision of this time?"
It was only a matter of time before construction began. Hot springs weren't exactly common in their area, but they were effective enough to make a large enough pool in a matter of days. Lu spent a few hours gathering the right herbs and letting them soak in the pool while Tabitha lay in the water, keeping it a steamy temperature. The sickest kalons were brought to soak in the pool, drank special tea and hot rocks were settled on their backs once the bath was over.
Using several types of herbs and fruit, she managed to keep her tea supportive of them immune system with vitamin C; though it tasted pretty terrible. With a new wing of the temple opened for the very sick to seek treatment, Lu found most of her days passing by with great haste. Rarely she was able to see Tabitha, but her eyes were now focused on something equally important; her people. She was in charge of organizing repairs, improving on her own remedies and teaching the village healers how to address certain issues that could not be seen or heard.
With multiple treatments, Kui slowly began to grow stronger and was able to best her illness in a matter of weeks. Early signs of spring brought her out into the village square ready to tell new stories of the strange healing plague goddess. The sight of her walking among the young ones who knew her as a mother filled Lu with pride at the work she'd done finally paying off. Finally retiring for the night, her once dark room was glittered up with lavender, chamomile, cloves and various flowers. All of the plants gifts for her hard work and mercy towards their plight.
Laying on the bed, paw steps pull her out of the daily daze and back to reality. Sitting up, Tabby stands in her doorway, leaning against the frame with her arms cross. "So, hero. I saw Kui today, walking around and singing as if she were twenty years younger." Her blue eyes were half closed, both tired from a days work but also relaxed and happy. Pulling her hair into a mess, Lu tries to hide the blush washing over her face. "You've really come around and I was hoping I could make a proposal; if I may be so bold." Crossing the room, she takes a seat on the best beside Lu.
"Uh... I'm just glad I could help. It's been too long since I felt like a leader and I'm even happier to have found a place here." She shyly mutters, two of her hands on the bed to keep her balance while the other two were close to her chest trying to contain her beating heart.
Tabby smiles, her ears flicking upward enthusiastically. "Really? I'm really happy to hear that because I was wondering if maybe... You'd consider staying here... Staying with me..?" The pretty kalon asks, her right hand laying on one of Lu's. Her blue eyes are piercing but beautiful, the scent of smoke and orchids lingered on her fur after a hard days work. It was hard not to tell her how much she wanted to be here forever, how badly she wanted to stand at Tabitha's side until her body became one with the earth for all eternity.
"Tabby... I... I really want to but... I was sent here for a reason, I'm supposed to learn something so I can someday keep others safe. I want to be like you, I want to be with you forever and day but I can't promise that. You know more than anyone the weight of duty and the hardships of being a leader. But I can promise to be with you every moment I can until I must leave..." To hear her own denial was heart breaking enough, but seeing the love and acceptance in Tabby's eyes made it even harder.
"I know... I was just hoping I suppose." Leaning in, she kisses the smaller kalon on the forehead and squeezes her hand. "But I'll take every ounce you can offer to me until then. Someone as lovely as you doesn't happen every century; but I'm glad you were here for me and my people all the same."

Winter came and went, spring brought new growth for the village as the two put in the best effort to assist in the time of need. Winter had come with the usual outbreak of sickness, but thanks to Lu many once fatal moments were turned into nothing more than a short recovery. Under her cover as a plague goddess, it became clear to the people of the village she was also able to purge any plague. Holding true to her powers, plants that healed and soothed spoke softly to her and she spoke kind prayer to them in return.
Memories of helping the sick, the poor and the injured came naturally. She remembered a terrible purge of their own back at her home planet. Come the next few months, she could see spore season happening and the land being sapped of natural goods. Treating others here the way she had back home made her feel... Missed. Important. Her paws shook with anticipation, standing on the beach now bathed in a true mix of orange and red from the sunset. Tabitha stood a safe distance away, watching closely.
"Are you sure you can control it this time?" Her honey voice cooed. Lu didn't shift her focus from the horizon, both paws slowly raising and facing in front of her as if a wall blocked her from the ocean. "Focus on where you want to go, where you want to be... Think hard." A slight waver in her voice could be heard, but it was too late to change her mind. A high pitched sound split the near silence, color soon bursting from Lu's paw pads and streaming out into a oval like mirror. The mixes of blues, pinks and purples misted into the mirror before the center clears. Lunamaek landscape peered back at her through the shape, mushrooms taller than the tallest tree and the two blue suns setting in the distance. Tabby stepped closer, staring in shock at the canvas on the other side.
"Is it really..?"
"A portal. To shift space, to enhance change, to connect worlds... This was my gift. I can go home now, be the leader everyone needs me to be. I can be like you." Lu says happily, finally turning to face her friend. "As sad as it may be, I must go with great haste to help my people before the hardest of spore season hits. I've spent a year on Earth and that time was far too long. I only hope I haven't failed my trial."
Tabby let out a snort of laughter, laying a paw on the smaller kalon's head. "You? Fail? With how you've handled being a god of the people, I doubt you'd accept failure at this point. Still, I'll miss your short little legs; and that even shorter temper." She teases, stepping back a little. Her arms cross a in a protective way, something Lu learned about from being here. Beings protect their most valued organs; granted in situations like this it was usually connected to something emotional.
"I uh... Look, all the stuff that happened..." Her face flushing even deeper colors of pink. "Between us. Ahem... I promise to visit when I can. I'm not gonna just vanish forever; not until I pass of course. Which I guess you won't do so I know where to find you and all..." Babbling under the pressure of not making it seem like she was leaving everything behind. If she had it her way, Tabby would be beside her on Lunamaek, but her place was here.
"I know. But just case you think you love someone else along the way." Hesitantly moving forward, Tabby places a peck on the shorter kal's cheek. "I'll trust you to keep me informed of your ever changing planet. Maybe even invite me to meet the family sometime." A shy smile creeps across her face as she backs away; practically melting into the orange light basking her from the sun. "See ya around?"
Lu nods, bowing respectfully. "If thy lady wishes it, it shall be done." With that, she pounces into the portal and back onto her own planet with the ghostly mirror disappearing behind her. Taking a breath, she opens her eyes to see the great blue and black moth, easily five stories high awaiting her arrival. Judgment had come.
