kalon name: Kamut [type of wheat]
secret:
Moons ago, one born of the blood of the stars fell to the tainted earth, cast from his realm for daring. Daring what, exactly? Daring affection, friendships, with those considered beneath those amongst the blazing heavens, so bright only they could gaze into the burning light.
His brethren had laughed at him when he first asked about the mortals, the ones he found ever so fascinating from his perch above.
“Oh, brother, why do you care for them so? We are free, here in the stars. Come, play with us!”
He never answered how he actually felt, then. The lives of those below were short, and they made the most of it. They laughed, loved, went through turmoil. They would challenge nature itself, taking the bounty for theirs, but it was a seemingly trivial matter. So, no, he didn’t often attempt to challenge his numerous siblings’ collective opinion, opposite of his. He would only be ridiculed and possibly locked away for a few decades to teach him a lesson- not incredibly long, but long enough to drive it in.
The irregularity would sneak, despite the danger, to the mortal realm every so often. There, he met several of those he treasured to watch, the ones that laughed and lived their brightest until the sparks in their bodies burnt out. He did disappear, sometimes; it wouldn’t bode well for one to take notice that he hadn’t aged in the past half century or so, no matter how much he longed to stay, tell the whispers the universe told only the ones who wander amongst stars to those he had met and cherished. To those he had even… no, he wouldn’t think that word. It meant more to his people, more than the brief trifles the short lived went through so many of.
He did get found out, eventually. He had never been the most clever, and it was one of the youngest who had caught him whilst he was trying to go back after an absence. The eldest had been called, and he was looked upon with the heavy stench of disgust and disapproval.
“You would tarnish yourself with the filthy mortals! Have you no shame?” The words were spat into the star-child’s face. “We know what we must do with you.” Dread, shivering down his spine and the nervous glances of the youngest siblings. “You should be happy now. You’ll freely walk with them long after the last of us burns out,” a snarl, a proclamation. Elder siblings looking away as the eldest plunged their essence deep into what made him, ripping out the tendrils of starlight and fire woven around his soul.
“Goodbye, brother.”
And so he fell.
He had crawled amongst the dregs of civilization like a coughed up bit of sludge. He didn’t need nourishment, thankfully, as scraps of what made him divine still crawled around his newly fragile body.
A child, of all people, took him in. Introduced him to her ‘posse’, she called it, a gathering of similarly rough looking children searching for a guide. They thought he had been sent by the angels- the irony was not lost on him.
“What’s your name?” He was asked by the child one day.
“I do not have one.” He did, but it was dead, now. Stripped away along with everything else.
“Well, that’s just silly! I’ll call you… Kamut.”
Kamut would be shunned, he knew, if the children who had adopted him as an older brother knew he was a star-born cast to earth. The greatest shame of all, known to any culture who could read and been taught the scripture from the stars. No, he would continue protecting them with all that he had, keeping quiet and providing. For he was a dark and empty shell, only attempting to fill it with the light of a feeble memory of what had been. [647 words]
