Username: ThyVampire
Name: Virgil
Gender: Male
What have they learned about themselves this year? (500 words):
Embracing diversity.
Not only has he embraced himself; by being honest about who he is to his loved ones,
but he had found the true value that diversity is what makes a level of understanding
among people and it isn’t wrong to be it either.
Background
For years, he struggled to fit in among his peers, even though he had known all along
that something inside him was truly incompatible in that environment. This included
forcing his most masculine-self and pushing away all things that intrigued him (such as
expressing his appearance in a more feminine state.) He tried out for sports, did well
in school, and went out to mess around with friends. He put on a fake persona, but at
home, he truly was a different man when no one was looking.
February 2
Fast forward a little later, he had met a man on the internet. For a couple of months,
they chatted as friends, but Virgil just wanted to scream inside every time a message
or a call came in. Unsure that this was the feeling of love, he pushed it aside as just
being excited to talk to his friend until there came a moment when the man he was
talking to admitted that he felt some sort of chemistry between them, and was unsure
if Virgil shared the same or alike feeling as him. Virgil didn't know what to say. His mouth
went dry and his paws clammy, and he shut his laptop off without a word to not admit
something he knew he wanted.
Monday, April 9
Virgil found himself in a state where he didn’t know who he was anymore, and he refused
to go back to school for a week because of his dysphoria.
Thursday, April 12
A message came on his phone. Already assuming who it was from, he refused to look at it.
Sunday, April 14
“I wish I had learned earlier this it is okay to be different. We don’t all need to fit into
the same mold. Imagine how boring that would be if we did. You have your own set of
characteristics, skills, dreams, and goals that makes you different from anyone else. I
know you. Embrace them, don’t be embarrassed by who you are. I’m sorry if I made you
uncomfortable for something you weren’t ready for yet.”
“Thanks.”
June, Pride Month
This is when Virgil unveiled his new values. Ever since that text, he gave up the fake identity
and admitted to who he truly was to friends, family, his online boyfriend, whether that
was his hidden sexuality or how he wanted to express himself. It took a bit of time,
but he participated in what sounded like something he wanted to be involved in for the first time,
such as pride month, and found a community to be fully accepted in. Diversity became a value
and a blessing for him, and something he also had learned about himself.
