why do they cry?

after many years, shasta has grown accustomed to her sudden outbursts of tears. she could be having a fun conversation with friends, playing her favorite video game, or even watching a sad movie when the laughter and tears begin; it's something completely out of her control, for shasta has a little known condition called pseudobulbar affect (pba) that causes extreme emotions at inappropriate times due to nerve damage from a head injury she received as a teenager.

the day she got the diagnosis after her soccer injury was the best day of her life. there was solid proof that she wasn't crazy; something very real was going on with her emotions and even if there was no cure, just hearing that she wasn't insane was more than enough for the girl. yet it was an entirely different story for her friends, many of which had begun to avoid her from her outbursts. shasta knows that her real friends are the ones who stuck by her side, yet she can't help but miss those who've walked away regardless, imagining what could have been.

in the end, shasta is okay with coping. life is pretty good regardless of her tears!

why do they cry? Dalamud is a seer who is gifted with the ability to glimpse brief flashes of the future. In it, he has seen the destruction of his city, and felt the anguish of those who perished in that great tragedy. However, he cannot act on these glimpses in fear of being accused of witchcraft and heresy. Out of sheer frustration and hopelessness at his own inability to avert the future, he weeps for the souls of the damned and the sorrow that is to befall them someday.

oh, i had the strangest day today, diary-
you’d never believe it.
today, i ran away.
i remember breathing heavily as my feet
took off running, farther and farther away
from the place i remember shattering in.
they did not sound like my feet. it was liberating.
i couldn’t hear my papa shouting. he was
asleep. i like him best like that.
i fell while i was walking on the railroad
tracks. my knees started bleeding. it hurt.
i didn’t cry though. i felt like such a big girl, diary.
i remember i made it to the lake. i skipped
some rocks. they made big plop plop noises,
and that reminded me of how sad i felt.
i looked down at the ground, and i wiggled
my toes to feel the smooth rocks beneath my toes.
and i started crying, and then i started writing.
diary, i feel so sad. my tears feel big and
heavy like the rocks in the water. i feel like
someone has taken to my chest with a big
rusty shovel and carved my heart out. i can’t
go back home. it’s getting so dark, and i
miss home so much.
i’m going to sleep.

It was late, Sylvester kicked a stone down the dimly lit street with his hands in his pockets. A delicious aroma filled the air and Sylvester’s stomach growled. He didn’t seem to know where he was going, he just let his nose lead the way. He eventually came across a street vendor selling hot dogs.
“Whadya want kid? Dontcha see I’m tryna pack up?” The Vendor spat.
“Can I please have a hot dog?” Sylvester asks.
The vendor doesn’t respond and hands him a fresh hot dog. Sylvester shoves his hand in the depths of his pocket and pulls out a large wad of change, handing it to the street vendor before wandering off.
He carefully arranges the hot dog in front of his mouth, his mouth salivating in anticipation. Suddenly the hot dog begins to slip out of the bun. Sylvester gasps and frantically reaches for it, trying to save it before it hits the ground. He fails and it rolls right into a storm drain.
“NO!” Sylvester screams.
Tears gather in his eyes, The Galvani dramatically kneels and looks into the night sky, tears streaming down his cheeks as if mourning the death of a fallen soldier.
