Why are they grumpy?:
Mistoffelees only dream was to perform the lead role in his favourite musical. He auditioned and was 100% sure he had done the absolute best out of all the contestants.
Sadly the judges felt otherwise. The lead role, his dream, was given to another, and Misto was given the role as his side kick.
Ever since then he has not been able to escape the emotional rut this disgrace has put him in and he's been grumpy since.

"You seem angry." The screen ruffled as the kalon behind it stood up and rustled around their caravan. Suìshí knew they were likely cleaning up their shadow puppets from the last performance as they spoke to him, a thought which didn't exactly make his heart soar with joy.

"I'm not angry, I don't get angry," he replied, his snappish tone not helping his argument in the slightest. But the voice behind the screen took it rather diplomatically.

"Fine then, you seem grumpy." Their shadow shook slightly and it was clear they were trying hard not to laugh. Suìshí just scowled, but of course expressions didn't make their way through silk very well. "Okay, okay, sorry. Why are you grumpy?"

"Some blasted kids snuck into my jiashan again last night and messed up my sands with their little paws. I had to spend all morning raking it back into position!"

The voice hmmed softly, seeming to think over his words. "Can't say I blame them, your zen garden sparkles like the moon itself some nights."

Suìshí shifted abruptly from leaning against the wagon to peering intently through the silk screen. The shadow stopped as if they could feel his stare.

"W-what?"

"How would you know how my jiashan looks at night? I thought you never left your wagon!"

The shadow stiffened, and then laughed half with embarrassment and half with indignity. "I do go out! I go out at night, sometimes. Your jiashan really is beautiful." They had gone back to tucking shadow puppets in trunks but Suìshí wasn't about to let them go so easily.

"So will you come out now?" The sun had just dipped under the mountain range and the sky was beginning to darken. It was now night for all accounts.

"I-I can't."

"But why?" Suìshí's frustration was suddenly surfacing, this was the real reason for his grumpiness- not some kits running around through his yard, but that his close friend would never reveal themselves to him. They wouldn't even tell him their name. And then there was the fact that-

"I have to leave."

His tone was getting louder as theirs got softer. "No you don't! You don't have to leave. Stay here, stay here with me."

"I told you, I can't." The ox that was hooked up to the wagon began to low uncomfortably, sensing the disturbance between the two kalons. Suìshí was begging to lose hold on his hope as well as his anger.

"But you haven't even told me your name. You can't just leave!"

The voice let out on of those breathless, choking sighs. "It's Jade. Now, step back, I have to go." He startle backwards, tripping over his paws as the wagon wheels started turning, and watched from the dirt Jade's cart was rolled down the unpaved streets, leaving Suìshí alone with only his waning frustration for company in the darkening sky.

Why are they grumpy?: A little bit of background information- Eddie doesn't technically have a job. He's an artist who makes money through commissions while he works on concept art for a game he and his friends are making. Last night, he stayed up until four in the morning working on a piece so he could help pay rent, knowing very well that he'd have to get up to make it to his seven o'clock class. However, as he was nearing the end of the piece, his computer crashed, deleting all the work he had done that night. Not only is he still upset from losing his work, but he's also moody because of the lack of sleep he got.

Why are they grumpy?: It probably has something to do with living r i g ht next to an active volcano. He's too stubborn to listen to the people telling him to move, since he insists that the place has a great view and is a family home, but he can't stand that there's always smoke coming out. Maybe he'll learn if it's ever prompted to /actually/ erupt. Until then though, he's just always snappy at people who try and tell him there's ash in his fur.
