"Fish"
Staryk is a fisherman! His main hobby, and indeed profession, is going out onto the water and catching fish, whether it be the high seas or a mild lake. He has a lucky fishing pole that he uses, which was specially made for him, copper plated with a beautiful finished wood handle. He only uses real worms as bait, and isn't afraid to admit that, when joking around with his buddies, he has eaten one or two himself.

Staryk may take fishing seriously, but nothing else. He's a real jokester, and a bit of a flirt. Other kalons tend to like him at first, but after awhile find the fact that he won't ever take anything seriously to be quite annoying.

On "Fishing"

"I'm not sure why everyone thinks of fishing as casting a line into water, waiting for a fish to bite, and then pulling the fish out. The word has so many other meanings."

Lana pauses for a second,

"Of course, most of its other meanings are derived from the original meaning, for example, fishing in court or in an investigation is going off on a path or search with the hope of finding useful information, but not a guarantee. And of course, I fish too. But not in the traditional sense of course. I fish for friends ... "

"I don't know why people assume that I'm a snobby princess who thinks she's too good for them, " she says, tugging at the pearls in her hair. "I guess they assume that I could have everything I could ever want. But that's not true! "

the last part comes out in almost a shout.

"I-I've never been good at talking to people and it's so hard. When everyone assumes that you wouldn't want to get to know them really do. So that's why I do it. Little schemes to see who's willing to help me. I'll drop my books everywhere and see if anyone helps me pick them up, and if someone does, I try to talk to them a bit. And sometimes they talk back, and give me their phone numbers, and ... I have a friend. And I value them more than all the pearls and jewels in the world."

ocean girl with the glass blue eyes and fleeting smile, tell me now, why don't
you stay a while?

haunting lilt. the ocean filling her lungs and compressing air. a red flag waving in
the background. a scream- is it hers or theirs? she can't tell, she can't tell, she's
drowning and she's a gone girl.
her eyes open. it's blue everywhere around her, and she's alone. those kalons w-
ho were screaming earlier, they're gone and they're not swarming her like they
had been before. put on your sunscreen! be careful, don't trip, marilla─! their
voices are iridescent now, another memory. she's glad. they're gone, those voices
telling her to do things. marilla swims someplace else, and her body maneuvers
perfectly in the ocean, unlike before and she finds it something she can get use-
d to very much.
there's a coral reef, and it's teeming with so much chatter, and it's colorful! vib-
rant colors, they make her happy. azure crabs. neon fish, starfish the color of bl-
ush, jellyfish in rainbow variants, and squid, absent of color but it's just as lovely
as the other creatures bathing along the body of coral. the squid has a fatherly,
deep voice when he greets her, its rough tones are reminiscent of someone she k-
nows, but she doesn't want to remember. she wants to smile and forget. he tells
her that her colors match the reef and she looks like the ocean, but much pretti-
er. she tells him he's beautiful and his arms - well, they're looking nice today.

one thing she likes about the ocean, is that it's always changing. it never sits sti-
ll and she can appreciate that, how it ripples but it's a canvas she wants to paint.
she lives underwater now, another fish in the ocean. her hair is like seaweed and
she feels like she belongs here, where the fish talk to her and they laugh at her j-
okes and she feels like she's made for this, to live in the sea. everything is easier
here and it moves more fluidly than before- she doesn't remember much of it, ju-
st remembers feeling like she was having the air taken from her lungs. she doesn-
't talk about it. she likes to pretend. that she's a mermaid. jellyfish. fish, plankt-
on. a shark, but a benevolent one. anything to get the mind off of the idea that
she doesn't belong here but somewhere else where her breath doesn't bubble.
it is always changing. but she isn't. she is static. she doesn't change. she wan-
ts to, though. she sees her friends, they're becoming so much more. but she's the
same as ever, with wavy hair that dances with the water and the sad eyes. she
looks up at the surface, admires it for a moment. what is like to live above wat-
er? what is it like without the ocean trying to plait your hair and to walk with
four paws instead of swim? brisk movements, how do they feel? she doesn't reme-
mber. she wants to, though. marilla closes her eyes. it's bright and white, and sh-
e feels the ocean being lifted from her lungs.

she remembers waking up from the coma. there are no bubbles in the spaces wh-
ere she breathes. there's others- like her. they look like her and they talk like her
but it's so different still. they're all holding their breaths in, like they live under-
water like she does. did. she tries to talk, to laugh, anything to relieve the sil-
ence that seems to cave in like the pressure of the water. her voice- it's a little c-
racked from misuse. they don't recognize her. she doesn't recognize herself. she
knows their faces, from her dreamscape, because she missed them but they're d-
ifferent now. she's different now. and / everything is different now (630).
