Lapis stared down at the tiny blue box that lay on her lap. This was the last gift and though rather small she couldn't wait to see it. Carefully she lifted the edges of the tape and peeled back until the thin blue paper came with it. This took a few minutes to do and with few pairs of eyes watching her she felt no rush. Lapis reveled a tiny brown box as she set the paper aside and hesitated to open it. She took a deep breath and opened it, rolling her eyes at what lay inside. "Fun joke guys." she playfully sneered as she held up a necklace that was stringed with tiny lapis lazuli gems. "How many more of these can I have?" she questioned in a joking manner as she stood to put the necklace next to the other lapis lazuli laden jewelry she kept on a hallway desk. "Happy Birthday!" one of her friends smirked out.

Iwalani surfed until sundown. She got out of the water, shook her fur, and returned the rental board. "Thanks!" she said as she waved goodbye. She then turned her attention to the shop just down the road. From her tired muscles aching so much, it took her fifteen minutes just to reach the traveling salesman. When she finally got there, she looked at his wares carefully. "You sell jewelry?"
"Yes, that's right, little miss! And for today only, you can get our low low price of $15 a piece!"
"Do you have anything more masculine?"
"Yessiree badabing, little miss! Here you are." He pulled up a single tray of necklaces.
Iwalani looked carefully at the jewelry. "I want the anchor."
"$15, little miss."
She paid him every penny she had.
"Thank you for your service, little miss!"
"That's not my name, she muttered, slipping the anchor around her neck and racing home. When she got there, she opened the door slowly, being careful to close it quietly. "Dad?" she called out quietly. She tiptoed over to his room and saw a sign on the door.
ASLEEP. DO NOT DISTURB. (Unless it's life or death, in which case, just scream.)
Iwalani nodded and headed to her room. She curled up in a ball and fell asleep.

The next morning, she rolled out of bed and put the anchor necklace into a box. She tiptoed once again to Caspian's door and saw the same sign. She sighed and trotted down the stairs to make breakfast. She cooked eggs and bacon, and when her father smelled the meat, he practically floated down the stairs. "Need some help, daring-do?"
Iwalani smiled. "Sure, sleepy-head. Grab a spatula."
They cooked together and ate breakfast at the table.
At the end, Iwalani looked at Caspian. "So, today's your birthday."
"You remembered. I'm touched." He smiled.
"I got you something." She pulled out the box and slid it over to him.
He opened it very carefully, and pulled out the necklace. He teared up instantly and slid it around his neck. "Iwa, it's perfect!"
She smiled.
He came over and hugged her. "This it the best birthday gift ever. Thank you!"
