Story: It was midnight when the sound woke me from my deep dreaming. It was different. I was familiar with the soft breathing of my herd-mates, how they shifted in their sleep and sometimes sent small shale stones skittering away down the deathly-sheer walls of our home. I knew the soft calls of the owls, the far-off wails of the coyotes, and the how the night wind caused the pine needles to rattle together. I lifted up my head and focused in on it. The darkness gave way to further blackness to my eyes and the occasional drifts of the breeze brought nothing but pine sap to my nose. There it was again: a faint, pleading whimper. I felt my blood quicken. It was the call of a female in heat. I glanced around again. The faint moonlight showed me that no one else had heard. Just the mere thought of finally being the one male to court this unknown female made me nearly rush to my hooves. I was delicate, however, and managed to get away from the herd without waking a soul. I could barely contain myself; she had called again, this time closer and more insistent. I felt my skin prickle with excitement; my mane was already standing on end. I knew I was strong, the carrier of the perfect genes for her foal. I made my way along the familiar narrow track and heard the call again, this time not yards away! I called back, my hooves lifting as I pranced closer. I lost all control when she whinnied not a yard ahead and dashed forwards! She would be mine, all mine!
I knew I was in trouble when my hooves hit the odd surface. Instead of the sharp step of shale, it was a ringing vibrant tone that immediately subdued my raging hormones. Something slid down behind me, brushing the tip of my tufted tail, and sent me into a panic. I shrieked and wheeled, pressing my ears to my skull. The female had vanished completely and I was trapped! Inside something! Every step on this alien surface clanged and clanked, making me kick and dance. My hooves connected with another vertical surface that clanged and sent the vibration up my delicate leg bones. I had been tricked! Rage suffused my body and I screamed out a battle cry. I wheeled, danced, and kicked my way around the walls of this enclosure. I knew it would give beneath my strikes if I was persistent. I heard some odd rhythmic noises outside calling out and directed my anger at them. I threw my full weight against the surface and then, my whole world turned over. Literally. My legs crumpled beneath me as the enclosure shifted again and began to roll! Over and over, I thudded against the surface. All was chaos, pain, impact after impact. Moonlight flashed through newly-opened gashes in the material, blinding me. I smelled the sweet tang of pine sap briefly as a tree gave way beneath my travel in this hell-box. When it stopped, I could only breathe and feel my pulse beat. Someone pulled open a side with an awful grating screech and warm human hands descended upon me. Just take me... I thought. I will get my revenge...but just take me from here. A sharp pinch at my neck and all descended into suffocatingly blissful darkness.
((Gave it my best shot. I feel so rusty at this!!!)
