The kalon wandered through their forest home with their little friend, who hopped around on their head.

"Stay still for a moment! You're going to give me a headache, Blue," Mu joked as they bent down to pick up a leaf. The bluebird obliged and settled down. The leaf was an oak leaf, like the rest of the leaves in the forest. Mu put it in between the pages of their journal and slipped the journal into their satchel.

They were starting to get hungry, and they hadn't eaten since the morning before. It was now the next day's afternoon. Blue chirped and fluttered on top of Mu's head. "I'm just starving, and I'm sure you're hungry."

As they continued along their never-ending path, they stopped by a plant with large fronds. As Mu moved the leaves aside, plump berries were revealed. Their mouth watered and they reached to pick one but Blue squawked loudly. At the bird's alarm, they retrieved their journal. Mu came to a page that had a drawing of the same plant. The description read "Fairy bell. Edible. Bland/sweet flavor."

Mu grabbed one and stuffed it into their mouth, sighing in relief at the tastiness that flooded over their tongue. They picked another one and held it to Blue, allowing her to peck. Continuing to harvest more, they hummed off-key as they worked.

Blue pecked Mu's head angrily until they stopped and began tweeting in perfect notes. "Showoff," they muttered but laughed.

“The storm spirits are angry today, aren’t they?”

Reva glanced down at the creature beside her, not really expecting an answer. She had initially thought the sleek dappled seal might be a selkie, a magical being capable of shedding her sealskin and taking the form of a kalon. This hadn’t happened, of course, but the seal’s dark eyes still gleamed with such intelligence that sometimes Reva still found herself expecting it to answer.

The sky overhead was a roiling mass of dark gray clouds, stretching as far to the horizon as Reva could see. Yep, there was a storm approaching- a formidable one. The Storm Wardens would have their work cut out for them today.

She turned to head back inside the great stone tower, propping the door open so her seal friend could join her. The animal had started showing up before storms, at first content to huddle outside the tower door, but recently becoming eager to follow Reva about as well. Her compatriots found her choice of companion odd, and though Reva herself had been confused by the seal’s friendliness at first, she had come to enjoy its company nonetheless.

Perhaps the seal knew, somehow, that the Storm Wardens would keep it safe. That was their job, after all- the order of mages worked to drive storms away from the exposed coastal villages. So long as the seal didn’t get underfoot while they were working to do so, Reva was content to enjoy its oddly intelligent company.
