Many of the sights she saw where of cities that rose beyond what she could see, with bright lights illuminating the streets at almost all times, with some very advanced technology that made holograms possible. It was always loud and bustling in the centermost parts of the city, and it was hard to find her way around what seemed to be a maze. There was no other life besides the kalons that lived in the city. Even the outskirts seemed devoid of life, with the only sign of life there was before were the dead trees that lined the pathways.
There was a reason why; before the kalons came to be the dominant species, their predecessors caused a nuclear fallout so great it destroyed much of the environment on earth, with many of its flora and fauna changed forever on earth. Many of those cities Tahani walked through were incredibly radioactive even after thousands upon thousands of years; while kalons could withstand it without many issues (besides their various harmless mutations) it poisoned everything else. Animals didn’t look the way they were supposed to, and what plants there were grew to terrifying lengths. It was the radiation that gave rise to the kalons after all, but at the cost of poisoning everything else with its effects. The only knowledge of the old world were of the old records and objects that showed what life was before the cataclysm, many of which were now rendered unrecognizable. Tahani grew up only hearing of forests, lakes, mountains and other natural wonders that ceased to exist as nothing but myths. When the rain used to be clear, and the skies were still blue all but a distant imagination. She, like many other kalons, believed it was a myth of older times until she discovered for herself that it used to be reality...
Within the ruins of their predecessors, they found photos, videos and even old specimens from the time before the fallout. Tahani was part of the team that found those artifacts, and she was blown away. With a tip she was given, she abandoned everything behind to find that very place that no living kalon had ever seen. She knew going into it that she may never find it, but it was worth a try. Most of the world outside the cities were nothing but deserts that supported nearly no life, and completely barren with sand and it was doubtful that she would even survive the harsh conditions. Despite life being rather good for most, they didn’t dare go out into the endless sea of nothing, but Tahani was different. Of what she could see of the photos, it showed what life could’ve been for the kalons.
What Tahani discovered was that despite the harsh desert that surrounded the cities for over thousands of miles, it still existed albeit still having the damage of the cataclysm in it. From deserts it shifted into rather oddly colored plains that she searched for the old world, and she was astounded by what she found. The world she saw in the clips her team found were real, albeit with slight changes of the environment. Many of the sights she saw hadn’t been seen by the kalons back home in over thousands of years with all sorts of flora and fauna thought to be extinct still surviving despite common beliefs.
Eventually, she will need to come back and report the news to the cities she grew up in. But as of now, her discoveries lead her to wander further and further with the stars leading her way towards what was once forgotten in time. Perhaps she doesn’t want to come back finding her old home dull, lifeless, and sterile compared to what she saw outside the boundaries of the cities. Maybe one day she’ll rejuvenate the life she saw when she gets back home. There have been times when she’s been homesick, but her curiosity remains insatiable for whatever else she may find her way.
