The low murmur of the motorcycle beneath him is barely audible against the sound of the crowd that stands in line nearby, the patrons waiting eagerly to enter the nightclub that had inconveniently popped up above his tattoo parlor. Business hours were over for him, but that didn't make it any less annoying that people were lining up well past his place of work to get drinks. There were countless bars downtown; why did everyone have to flock to this one? He swore to himself that the universe was just out to get him some nights.

Smoke climbs into the brisk night air from the cigarette between his fingers, and as misplaced voices buzz in his ears, he takes a long drag from it. He gave the place another month before it shut down. Nothing new ever lasted in this town; the people here preferred comfort. Eventually they'd go back to their routines, and he'd be rid of the place.

His phone rings, and his ears twitch subtly as the sound registers. He can feel a few eyes on him, and he glares, answering the phone as he flicks the cigarette to the ground.

The city was bright tonight. It always was.

Not bright enough to remove the dark entirely, though, Neroma noted with a wry grin. Though the lights of the Brightec Metropolis were abundant, there were still patched of darkness- both figuratively and literally. The city prided itself on clean energy and honest dealings, but shady corporations still made backdoor deals and relied on pollutant-spewing factories placed outside the city limits. Hackers and dataminers relentlessly battered protected servers, searching for any stray bit of data to use for their purposes. Dark overhead walkways, stretching above the main streetlights, provided perfect vantage points for those wishing to go unnoticed.

Neroma grinned wider, her dark blue figure all but invisible in her dark corner. How did she know so much about the questionably legal dealings of certain companies?

Simple. She used to work for one.

After being alerted to the truth of her workplace, she had left- but not before crippling some servers and freezing some assets, of course. Neroma had always been gifted at leaving an imprint in her wake.

The company had since recovered, but Neroma’s desire to bring them down remained.
