The forest was pitch black and every noise broke the heavy silence that had settled at sunset. It was a struggle to see the path in front of her, and Dia had to keep careful watch of all her surroundings. The flashlight in her mouth was hard to maneuver while walking and having her body carrying a backpack. She padded over a wooden bridge resting over top of a small river where it trickled and cracked against rocks sticking out of the surface.
Time was unimaginable and unconceivable. There were no markers besides the moon having shifted when you looked up every so often. Not that Dia wanted to know how much time passed; she wanted to be as fluid as an ocean right now, keeping the mystery of time a secret. Enjoying herself was her top priority, with her new found freedom of being an adult.
Around riverbends and up hills, Dia let the cool night temperature calm her and prepare her for how cold it could be when she got to her destination. She kept her eyes pealed for a specific area marker in bright neon orange, turning the flashlight this way and that in a rhythmic motion, which would signify she would be soon reaching the plains that started after a long trek through the forest.
After an unknown amount of time, with only her paw pads aching to tell her it's been more than a couple minutes, Dia caught the reflection of the area marker. It was tied to a low hanging tree branch so everyone would be able to see it. Her heartbeat started to race with excitement, and Dia picked up her pace.
The trees slowly broke away to frame a large area of grass with no trees or bush. She made her way over to some flat ground her friends had showed her a couple years ago when they first came here. She dropped the backpack and opened it up to pull out a blanket to sit on. She turned off the flashlight and threw it carelessly into the pack as she sat down.
Dia looked up at the star filled sky, eyes reflecting the light that shined down on the earth. She stared for a couple moments, pondering the existence of herself, others, and the universe. These big balls of gas were millions of miles away, and yet she could still see them. The opportunity to see the night sky free of light pollution was important to her; as a space fanatic and wannabe space explorer, Dia wanted to race among the stars.
The little breeze that pushed her fur around died off into a peaceful quiet, and created a sense of belonging and home. As if being watched by some higher deity, Dia bowed her head in respect. She didn't truly believe in theism, but the feeling of a stronger presence overwhelmed her and almost compelled her to do it.
This is the 8th wonder of the world, She thought.
She settled into her spot, content to watch the night sky and let herself feel smaller than she's ever been. It felt wrong to try and do anything besides observing. Something rushed up through her chest into her throat and she choked on the feeling; it wasn't excitement, but it wasn't adrenaline. Revelation, maybe?
Dia couldn't find it in her to think too strongly about it. In a time like this, it would happen; space obsession and all. She'd never felt more grateful to her sibling who told her it'd be a clear sky and that she should go night sky seeing.
A soft sigh escaped, and Dia fell back onto blanket, resting her arms on her chest. Bigger than herself.. yeah.
