Kalon Name: Aileen
Prompt (up to 500 words):
Aileen was so excited, she didn't know who exactly set the oddly-shaped gift in front of her. She barely noticed that the bottom wasn't wrapped at all, and there were odd gaps in the shiny paper. With excitement only a young child can have, she tore at the paper relentlessly and was greeted by a soft chirp and a flutter of pretty red feathers. Her eyes opened wide as she realized that the gift was a shimmering gold birdcage, complete with a tiny creature that studied her with bright, large black eyes. "Hello," Aileen murmured, and the bird hopped excitedly on its little perch, letting out a few notes that seemed to hang in the air as everyone watched her meet what would be her long time companion.

Over time, they got used to each other. Aileen spent all of her pocket money on a bigger cage than the one that her sweet little wren - who she'd named Scarlette - that took up a large, sunny spot in her bedroom. However, the bird spent next to no time in that cage. Normally she'd be fluttering freely about the house or riding on Aileen's shoulder, affectionately pecking at the young Kalon's ear. Her parents had disputed her freedom at first, but their daughter's tears soon changed their minds. She just couldn't stand locking her new friend up in a cage!
As she grew older, Scarlette and Aileen only grew closer. They learned to communicate a bit - Scarlette would fly to her cage when she was hungry, for example, or snatch away anything in the Kalon's paws if she wanted attention. Her least favorite thing was when Aileen would shower, she'd spend the entire time attempting to dive into the stream of water and quickly darting out as her feathers got wet. Instead she'd wait on the bathroom counter, preening at her wet feathers unhappily.
When Aileen moved out, of course her best friend came along. She even convinced her job to let Scarlette tag along, bringing a small cage for Scarlette to eat and do her business in. Customers who came in to the curio shop were often shocked to see her and would often hurry to find Aileen and tell her that a bird had found its way in and was trapped, but Aileen would just laugh and reassure them that Scarlette was supposed to be in the store and was actually her pet. As long as they were kind, she'd even call Scarlette over with a whistle so they could see her and stroke her feathers.
