favorite thing about fall [300 word limit]:
Day of the Dead
The lanterns come first- from nowhere. All different shapes and colors; they cast the graveyard into a haunting light, but it was all for show. These lanterns were the ones laid on graves by loved ones each year, scrawled on their sides were messages. Every message was carried lovingly by the passed, announcing their arrival- and eventually- their departure.
She heard a whine close to her ear, startling her. When she looked over, she just barely make out the blurry but definitely focusing edges of a black-furred dog. His tongue lolled out of his mouth in greeting.
"Ox?" He was so much bigger than she remembered, but he still wiggled his entire lower half in excitement at the sound of his name. She reached out her hand, and he stretched his neck forward to welcome her with licks, but he passed right through her. "Right, boy. Sorry. Not yet," she laughs, still caught off-guard by the appearance of her old friend. She had been anxious that he had forgotten her in all the autumn seasons she had missed since she had moved. But here he was, still the same.
She squeezed her hands in her lap, wishing that she could feel his warm side lean reassuringly against her. But that wouldn't happen, so she instead focused her gaze on the emerging ghosts. As each one emerges, she feels a certain swelling of emotion in her heart. These aren't her emotions. Each spirit carries its own distinct memories, its own feelings. Some haunt past lovers, which is why sometimes you feel the squeeze of heartache, even years after. Some just fill her with a warm determination in the pit of her stomach. She uses that feeling to steady herself.
Time for a family reunion.
