Prologue
Turkeypelt smiled in his sleep. He had completed his assessments and while -pelt might not be considered the most “prestigous” suffix there was, Sorrelstar had proclaimed that some personalities were simply too complex to be put into a box and that he should be proud of the many skills that he had mastered in his short life. And he was proud.

“I’ve enjoyed watching his story,” commented Bramblethroat to her brother, Dustfang. The brown tabby molly was standing where Turkeypelt would have been, had he been in Starclan.

Dustfang’s ears and tail twitched with bemusement. “What you get out of stories I’ll never understand.”

Bramblethroat smiled, an expression borne of living through and retelling countless stories first to her fellow apprentices, then warriors and kits, and then finally to the young of the clan as an elder. Now that she was in Starclan, she could focus less on the past and more on the present--and what was to come. “Maybe it comes from being able to have a paw in both worlds,” she said thoughtfully. “I was always able to See into Starclan when the leader and medicine cat couldn’t, and now I See into the living world.”

“Maybe,” agreed Dustfang. “I’ll be going now, though. Palepelt wanted to hunt with me.” With that, he bounded off, past the Starclan-Sorrelclan’s camp borders and into the mists that would eventually lead him home. To Starclan-Cherryclan.

Bramblethroat stared at the spot where her brother disappeared for a few more moments before turning her gaze back to the sleeping tom that only she could see without slipping into his dreams. “Rest,” she said softly. “Rest and do your duty to Sorrelclan.” Her head rose. “As I did to mine.”
