C. Write a story about their first day of school. [400 / 500 words]

Siamak zipped up his backpack, and took a deep breath to still his beating heart. He was ten years old, and he had been homeschooled his entire life. For the first time, he would be sitting in a classroom. The shows he watched on television filled his mind with terror- bullies, fake friends, and embarrassing moments that made everyone cringe. Would he be that kid? The one who everyone cringes at when he passes by? His golden gaze rested on the terrarium that sat in his room, containing his best friend- a corn snake named Tangerine. It gave him an idea- perhaps she could be emotional support for him on such a big day? It was summertime, so she would have no problem staying warm.

The young kalon snuck downstairs as quick as his little legs could carry him, snatched up his lunchbox and a few packets of hand warmers, as well as a towel. He ran back upstairs, placed the hand warmers at the bottom of the lunchbox, then covered them with a towel. He opened the lid to the terrarium, gently picked up Tangerine, and placed her in the lunchbox. He zipped up the lunchbox, but was sure to leave a little space open so that she could breathe. He slung his backpack over his shoulder, but carried his lunchbox with great care.

The start of his day went smoothly, and every now and then, he'd unzip his lunchbox to check on Tangerine. Lunchtime, however, is when things start to go downhill. He found some people to sit with in the cafeteria, and as he was chatting, one of them screamed. Tangerine must've gotten sick of the lunchbox, because she had slithered out of the hole he left in the zipper and was now inching toward one of Siamak's new friends. She was just harmlessly searching for another source of heat, but they certainly didn't interpret it that way. His heart sank in terror as some people scattered and distanced themselves from the table which he sat in, and teachers scrambled to investigate what caused the chaos.

He got in trouble for bringing a snake to school and was sent home early. Never again did he bring Tangerine along, but the experience is how he was able to make one of his first friends in school, who had heard about the incident and apparently really loved snakes, too.

A. What are they most afraid of? [Writing (max 250 words) + art (max 1 drawing, not animated)]

Expressing the fear of having to grow up, not knowing what will happen in the future and wondering if eventually everything will amount to nothing :

The darkness pressed down on me, endless, oppressive and threatening. It weighed down on me forcing me down, unable to stand. Maybe my eyes are closed? Blinking doesn’t do anything, I cant hear anything either or taste or smell, there’s just pressure on all sides, like bars of cage closing in, coming closer and closer until I’m curled up and contorted because there’s not enough space. The feeling is painful, there’s nothing else to experience and so its amplified, even my erratic heart beat, which I can feel pounding, and shout be deafening is silent. My heaving breathing, too, which should be tearing its way out of my throat, is not there. There’s nothing there.

It could e seconds passing, hours, days, months, years even decades but time is meaningless when there is nothing. Until there is, the threat of death – nothingness embodied, darker than black, delivered on whispering thundering feathers and sharp talons advances unhurried towards me. It knows the pressure – the cage – I am in and yet remains unaffected, so why should it rush? Then all of sudden everything is breaking around me, splintering into shards of glass, reflecting pieces of me and I’m being torn apart. The glass starts to crumble returning to the nothingness so that there will be nothing left. Nothing to see – to remember. And my life will be never be amounted, not even one of millions. For is there is to be a one there has to be something to define the one.
