today I spoke to him !! I pushed up my glasses, took a breath, walked up to him,
and actually said hi! He said hi back, and I can't believe it! He even said he hopes
he'll see me again soon, so I told him to come see me as the lead in the school
play!! I can't wait to see him! I'll give a big extra special bow when he does come
to see me!!
-actually freaking out rn,

OH. MY. GOD. He showed up to opening night tonight! He even came and saw me
after the show. Maybe he does like me after all?? I think I should tell him! I'll tell
you how it goes !!

The day had finally come. I would tell him how I have felt for the longest time. I pushed up my glasses,
took a breath, and walked towards him, with perfect timing too. He was alone, so it was perfect.
"Hey," I said as I approached. He smiled and said hello back. "There's something I wanna tell you," I began,
mustering up all my courage. "I ... I like you ... you know, like you like you. And uh ... yeah." I said, offering
him a smile. He took a moment to think. After a moment had passed he gave me a pained look.
"I'm sorry but ... I don't feel that way about you." he said, in almost a nonchalant tone. It hit me like a ton of
bricks. But I was a theatre kid, a thespian, and could easily act like nothing was wrong. I took a breath, gained
my composure. "Oh, alright. That's fine." I said, turning to go, not looking back. As I walked off, I could feel his
eyes on me.
That night when I went home, I cried my eyes out. The ton of bricks weighed me down.
"Hannah! It's time to go back to school for your show tonight!!" my mom called from down stars. I wiped my eyes
and went back to school.

I stood on stage, awaiting the rise of the curtains. I had been heartbroken. But alas, the show must go on. As the
curtains raised, I smiled, and began saying my lines, as thought nothing had happened that day.

OKAY so it might be a little
confusing bc I wrote it in Southern
Gothic Lit style, but basically the
bayou is haunted and killed her so
she would come back as a spirit of
the marsh to protect it because it
trusts her since she was never
afraid of it!

Spanish moss and kudzu vines cling to every surface, climb the bark of bald cypress trees that have stood for centuries and have more knowledge than you could ever hope to acquire. Ma and Pa always told you the bayou was a strange, wicked place, a place that folk like us should never set foot in, everyone knows there’s dark forces in the Southern Marsh that make it come to life at night.
But there was a deep pull inside of you, something old, to be feared.
“Curiosity killed the cat,” Ma said as you slunk home with slitted eyes, satisfaction stuck to your skin along with humidity and mud. Until the day you didn’t come home.
The bayou sang it’s whistled wind tune in your ears, beckoned you with branches like arms and the sickly sweet smell of sap in the heat. It was too hard to deny its siren call, no matter how many times you told yourself you’d stick to carved out trails like the neighbourhood kids you always found yourself knee deep in swampwater in the middle of the Southern Marshlands the next day.
It wasn’t different from any other day really, your hair pulled back from your sweat slick face, mud sloshing below your barefeet. The air hung humid, sticky even though black clouds rolled through the sky like a warning, rumbled growls but didn’t release its promised downpour. Your eyes were bright, you’d learned to ignore the voices in the shadows, much like the rest of the town, even if they were louder in the bayou. Almost like the screams of cicadas, and you might have even been able to convince yourself it was just that, if the noise ever stopped.
The swap was thicker with mud in some places, sometimes it clung to your toes, and sometimes it didn’t let go. The earth sucked at your feet, and while you usually just waited calmly until it freed you (you knew it was just lonely and touch starved), this time was different, because instead of the feeling of mud on your barefeet there were claws. A scream caught in your throat as it dragged you down, until all you could taste, smell, or see was the deep brown of the dirty water.
You didn’t come home that night. You were a part of it now, and you couldn’t help but be okay with that.
