No matter the challenge, have courage.
Growing up, David dreamed of becoming a police officer. He was obsessed with shiny badges and stopping the bad guys - saving the say. And for a while, he kept up on that dream. As he got older, though, he started to realize that it wasn't all about knights in shining armor. There were all kinds of rules, regulations, and so much paperwork between him and a job that probably wasn't going to give him the dream he wanted anyway. When he hit high school, he figured out pretty quickly that he was no scholar, and struggled his way into just scraping a diploma. Discouraged and increasingly apathetic, he completely tossed aside the dreams of college and the police academy, trading them off for a comfortable career in construction. It was easy - he was strong enough to handle the manual labor - and it paid the bills no sweat. Put up the building, fill in a pothole, slack off while the foreman isn't around, then call it a day and head home. The hours weren't great, and sure, the hot days were a mess, but it worked out. For the longest time, that was enough.
On one of those horridly hot days, David snuck off behind the shady side of the building they were putting up and laid down for a very unapproved break. After all the manual labor and in the relaxing cool of the shade, it was no surprise that he quickly fell into a somewhat well-earned nap.
When he woke, it was to a screech.
Disoriented, he stumbled to his feet in the dimming evening light. The car had slammed into a lamppost not fifty yards away, a once sleek black vehicle now a lump of smashed metal and glass. Before he could consciously put together what he was doing, he found himself tearing away at the crumpled doors, shoving away the shattered glass, and freeing the mother and daughter who were trapped inside the wreckage. It wasn't until they were freed, the police arriving at the scene, that he noticed the deep gashes left in the backs of his hands from his frantic rescue. As the woman thanked him profusely and moved off with the police to explain what had happened, David realized that there was something here he'd lost. When he gave up on his dream, he gave up on this feeling too. He wasn't sure exactly what it was he felt, but it was something like pride, something like satisfaction, or whatever it was, something absolutely amazing. He realized then that while it wasn't going to be easy, he wasn't done. It wasn't over. That no matter how difficult it was going to be, he had to have courage, for the things that really mattered.
