────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The engine gives a whine as their stolen car shoots up a hill and Claudius quickly shifts it into a lower gear before cruising up to
the top and bringing the car around a wide curve. There’s a soft breeze that floats in through a small crack in the driver’s side
window. The blond leans against the door with one fist curled against his temple, slipping deep into thought. He gnaws tenderly
on his lower lip, releases it, and gives a sigh.
Bouncing from town to town isn't the easiest thing in the world. Though they may live out of their parents' old ride there's gas,
food, and hygiene to worry over paying for. It's all they can do sometimes to make sure that they've eaten at least a little some-
thing that day and that they haven't run on empty. This sort of life is particularly taxing on the boys; their chance at a normal
childhood was torn from them at too early an age.
"Do you think we'll find them?" He finally speaks up, cutting a short glance to his silent brother.
"Who?"
"You know who."
"Maybe." Louis keeps his replies short, not wanting to reveal to his brother his inner turmoils. It's been nearly three years to the
day since their parents went missing. Nearly one-thousand and ninety-five days since they were tucked safely into bed and kissed
on the forehead by their mothers. It's been an innumerable sum of minutes since they've both felt comforted and stable, and
even a larger sum of seconds since Louis has played baseball with his mom.
He squeezes the handle of the bat that lays delicately across his lap. It's almost like he can once again feel the sunshine beating
down upon his back as he steadies himself in their front yard, his mom's hands on his shoulders as she directs him how to hold the
bat before swinging. It was a simpler time then.
Before he can stop it, tears well up in his eyes. Louis tries to blink them away quickly before they could dare tumble down his
cheeks. The tears are rubbed away with a soft hand as they fade into a serene silence once more.
"Do you remember when mama baked us those red velvet cupcakes for the our birthday and we knocked over the plate? Mama
almost cried over it," Claudius laughs softly, suddenly becoming overwhelmed with emotion. It's hard for either of them to speak
so freely.
"And later mom made us remake them to surprise her." Louis finishes the memory with the faintest hint of a smile on his lips. He
takes a shuddering breath. "I really miss them, Claud. I don't like this; I don't like having to go around this way."
Claud takes one hand from the wheel to offer it to his brother in comfort.
"We'll find them, I know we will. They have to be out there somewhere waiting for us to come and get them.
Then we'll be together."
