“That far? Nah, no way I could possibly toss it that far.”
As a young kit, Jacie formed one of the strongest bonds; the one of family.
“Really? I saw you toss a basketball all the way across the court into the net. This should be nothing!”
Her cousin was her inspiration, her reason for enjoying the outdoors and going out of her comfort zone. They were partners in crime, and ran to each other first when it came to any issue in life.
The girl’s light laughter filled Jacie’s ears with such joy that she couldn’t help but beam a grin in her direction. “Oh come on, Jace. Skipping stones is all about the flick of the wrist, getting the right angle. Besides, this is moving water!”
She threw the smooth stone, only to have it make a ‘plunk’ sound and sink to the bottom, never to be seen again. Another laugh, another sit on the grass, gesturing to the river. “It really enjoys eating my rocks. Maybe it’s not a river at all?”
Jacie rolled her eyes, picking up a stone herself and throwing it, but missing as well. “Of course not. It’s obviously bad luck in liquid form.” The girls shared a giggle, and they laid back on the green hill, gazing at each other as they enjoyed their company amongst one another.
The pink kalon paused, glancing down to her cousin’s hand, seeing a red string tied to her paw. “Hey, what is that?” she asked, pointing to it. Her cousin seemed to only brighten at the question, untying it and showing the long string to her.
“This is my soulmate string. At least, that’s what my mother said. Whoever is my soulmate, romantic or not, the string will break it half when they are found, and that kalon or creature will have that string attached to them. Then I’ll know who my true other half is.” She smiled, a mild sadness behind her eyes as she looked at it, retying it on her finger.
Jacie studied it, thinking about it with a nod. She wondered who was her cousin’s soulmate was, and the thought got her down, but soon her cousin got up and raced to the river, jumping in with a laugh. “Come on Jace! We don’t got all day!”
The girl was stunned, but laughed, and got up to join her, when she noticed that more water was beginning to rush into the river, and she frowned. “It looks too dangerous, let’s go further down,” she warned, but before her cousin could reply, the water level rose drastically, whisking the girl down the bank. She was stuck in a fight or flight mode, but immediately rushed after her cousin, shouting her name as she went further and further away. Before she could finally catch her, she felt a sudden, forceful tug on her paw. She stopped for only a moment, and her world finally dropped.
Tied around her finger, was the red string.
