Once, there was a pair of Kalons. They were very happy and loved each over very much.
Not long into the mateship, the male died, leaving his mate alone and saddened.
The mate, distraught, sat by his graves for a week. She only survived off the insects who crawled by and the relentless rain that poured from the sky.
On a particularly cold and dreary night as she sat beneath a clump of fern, the mate saw someone in the faint moonlight. It was a Kalon, unlike any she had seen before. He was see through and it appeared as if the weakest gust of wind could blow him away.
She watched him, weary and untrusting. The mystery Kalon paused in front of her, his eyes seeming to warm the air around the twosome. Their eyes met for what seemed like an eternity until he at last spoke to the grieving widow.
"You've lost something very close to you."
His voice was like the deepest shadows, cold and scratchy and unreadable.
Unable to find words to speak, the mate nodded softly. Tears threatened to fall from her wide eyes.
"I can bring him back," The Kalon said, his eyes not leaving hers. "But it comes with a price."
Another eternity seemed to pass around the twosome, but at the same time everything seemed frozen. Even the rain released it's hold on the earth.
"I will bring you your mate back in exchange for your firstborn child."
The deal seemed too good to be true and the mate found herself nodding. She was tired of being alone and with her mate, she'd always be happy.
With a sly smile, the mysterious Kalon began to fade. "So it shall be."
~~~
But he had lied.
The mate waited. Days, then weeks. Nothing happened and there was no sign of her lost mate.
Only an intense hunger and weariness drove the mate on, her belly heavy with stones of sadness.
As time passed, she came to learn why the hunger and exhaustion existed. The odd Kalon had kept his promise but in the most twisted way he could. She did have her mate back...
But only in their kits.
~~~
It had happened.
She lay in the warm darkness of her den. Three squirming bodies lay at her side. Each one was perfect in her eyes.
However she eyed the oldest kit, a female, wearily. The ghost Kalon's words rang in her ears and her heart, heavy with grief since their birth, seemed ready to break.
The sadness she had felt since their birth was overwhelming. She was weak, unable to hunt to provide for her newborn family. Each day she felt the small beings at her side drain more and more of her life force until...
She saw her mate again. Everything was alright.
~~~
The kits were scattered to the wind.
The strange Kalon came for the oldest as he had promised and laid a curse upon her.
Wings sprouted from her shoulders and other mutations occurred.
She would be his Reaper, collecting souls from the dead or dying and bringing them to the underworld for their final judgement.
The other kits?
Well, we'll just have to find out.
