what a thing it is to grow...( appreciate the bluer notes. ♫ )
username : e4rlgrey | name : Oberon "Bo" Mathis | gender : male
favorite hobby : Bo is a kalon of many hobbies. He enjoys hiking, writing poetry, and napping, to name a few, but his favorite pastime is the practice of witchcraft.
Growing up, his mother worked in holistic medicine, offering potions and less conventional cures on the side, and his grandmother was a practicing psychic, her parlor full of tarot cards and crystal balls. He was always surrounded by the occult, and it seemed only natural that he would develop an interest in the arts as well. Though he never showed a penchant for telling the future (Gram always said he lacked the patience and the focus) he spent many early morning hours helping his mother tend to her garden, or watching her use the roots and petals of a harvest to make salves and other remedies. Working with the plants brought Bo a simple joy, and fascinated him in a way no other subject could.
Now that he's on his own, Oberon is what one might call an urban witch. His cramped eighth story apartment is quite a contrast to his rural childhood home, where he'd spend evenings catching fireflies in the lavender fields or examining different strains of fungi in the nearby copse of woods, but he's making do. He has all but transformed his balcony into an herb garden, since that's just about the only place they'll get enough natural light, and the interior of his home is positively brimming with plants. Potted plants dominate his shelves and windowsills, while the tendrils of some of his hanging plants reach all the way down to the hardwood floor. Much like his mother's garden, not every plant he keeps has a practical use; some simply look interesting or provide a pleasant fragrance to his home. However, rather unlike his mother, Bo harbors a peculiar fascination with plants of the deadly variety. He keeps these very sparingly and always labels them clearly, but even he has to admit that it's one of his creepier interests.
When he's not researching snakeroot and oleander or making sure that his venus flytraps are fed, Bo is putting his flora to use in a number of different ways. There are the typical applications, such as basil for marinara sauce and mint leaves to chew, and then there are the witchier uses for things. Oberon still considers himself a novice, so mixing love potions or cure-all elixirs is out of the question, but he's more than content to tackle smaller goals. For example, he once whipped up a cologne made of flower extracts and essential oils to try and get that cute regular at work to talk to him. (It was only half successful, but they did make eye contact! Small victories are victories nonetheless.) His favorite two things to make are teas and incense, and he's always trying out new combinations of them: a green tea mix to ease storm-induced migraines, a bundle of incense to ward off those creepy crawly bugs that have taken up residence in his shower drain. Mixing his own loose tea gives him the opportunity to practice reading tea leaves as well. He's not particularly good at it yet, and considers it to be the Rorschach test of the witching world, but it's still something new and fun for him to try. It's always good to expand your horizons, after all.
The newest area that he has taken an interest in is the power of healing crystals. Crystals are all about positive energy and good intent, and they're perfect for a dedicated optimist like Bo. He especially likes them because they're so versatile, with their many colorful varieties that serve all different purposes. There's garnet for creativity, moonstone for confidence, topaz for relieving stress; he has yet to come across a crystal that he did not like or find a use for. He can wear them around his neck, keep them at home on display, or stick them in a pocket and take them just about anywhere. He has chosen, however, to keep most of his stones buried in the soil with his plants. This is beneficial for both parties, as the earth is thought to cleanse the crystal, while the plant gains its properties. It's a nice way for him to make sure that his plants are getting love and protection even while he's out of the house.
Although he knows that there are naysayers and skeptics, people who denounce his way of life for being unholy or just plain strange, he doesn't let their words bother him. Practicing his craft is Bo's way of staying in touch with his heritage while enriching his own life. He's just trying to be at peace with himself and find his own brand of happiness.
occupation : Oberon is currently working at a local tea shop and cafe. So far, they haven't agreed to use any of his homemade herbal mixes, and he's not entirely sure why. It's not like he's ever poisoned anyone before. Well, okay, there was that one time. But no one has ever died! Everything he makes is totally, mostly safe for consumption.
personality : If asked to describe him based on first impression, most people would say that Bo seems a little offbeat, or not all quite there. Not in the way that he's got a screw loose; he just doesn't always seem present. He tends to get caught up in his thoughts and lose track of his surroundings, and it's not unusual to find him softly murmuring to himself or scribbling something down on a scrap of paper with a misty look in his eyes. Some of the more malignant gossipers will reason that he must be casting hexes on them all. In reality, he's probably jotting down a line for a new poem or doodling little flowers and leaves.
Bo has certainly had his fair share of nasty rumors spread about him since he made his big move. If his hobbies weren't enough to get people talking, his socially awkward behavior would. Some snicker that he must have been raised by wolves, the way he can't hold a proper conversation. Bo is nothing but friendly and kindhearted, but there's always so much going on around him now that he lives in a highly populated city, always so many people talking at once, and he's found that it's easier to observe or withdraw entirely than to try and keep up or participate. He is making an effort and branching out where he can, though. His coworkers have teasingly likened him to a fortune cookie, as Bo has taken to interjecting little quotes of wisdom wherever he thinks they apply. These are usually quite obviously pulled straight from the internet, but most people know that he only means well. His favorite gem lately is, "A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms."
When something does manage to capture his full attention, Oberon can become quite intense. It's a real contrast to his usual aloof and breezy demeanor; his faraway eyes become clearer than crystal and sharp as a knife, and his complete lack of focus becomes borderline fixation. This kind of attention is rarely seen outside of his home, or given to anything that isn't green and leafy, but it just goes to show that his head isn't always in the clouds. He's fully capable of taking things seriously when the circumstances call for it, but he prefers not to let things stress him out. In fact, it's pretty difficult for anything at all to faze him. Bo finds it much simpler to roll with the punches and let the tides of fate carry him where they may. He knows that he can find a ray of light in even the most unexpected or negative situations.
relationships : Bo lives directly below Nicandro, and the two have formed an unlikely and tentative friendship. They met by mistake, really. Nic lives in apartment number 461, and Bo lives in 416. When Nic received three abnormal packages within one week, he took it up with the building's management, who pointed him in Oberon's direction. Begrudgingly, Nico lugged the heavy boxes down to 416 and rapped on the door. Bo apologized for the trouble, the two exchanged a bit of banter ("What did you order, a ton of rocks?" Seeds, actually. ...And a few rocks. "Well, whatever. Just get your own address figured out." I'll do that, thanks. "And by the way, I think I've been smelling... whatever it is you do down here coming up through my vents." Oh, that's interesting. Have you been noticing any improvements in your digestive health, by any chance? "Excuse me?" Maybe you'd better come in. Tea?) and the rest is history. Nico is a nonbeliever, but the idea of having his future laid out for him is too intriguing to pass up, so he's more than happy to let Bo read his cup whenever he visits for tea.
He doesn't have many other friends and acquaintances yet, but he keeps in frequent contact with his mom. She only lives about an hour or so away, so he tries to make sure to pay her a weekend visit at least once a month, especially because she tends to worry about him.
et cetera : a short piece of writing & some additional aesthetic inspiration !
