Story:
I open my eyes to the brilliant new day. "Mom-" I begin and stop. Mother isn't hear anymore... I remember... The wolves... The fighting... It flashes behind my eyelids.
I was three years old. A bloodcurling ear piercing howl breaks the peace of the clearing. The mares bolt, and I run after my mother. We know the drill. Wolves = death. Father runs alongside us. I know I'm not supposed to but I look back anyways. This pack is bigger than any I had ever seen. Much faster too. I push harder, my hooves beating harshly against the ground. One wolf comes flying out of no where. It grabs my right rear leg, causing me to trip and tumble. I am almost imediatly consumed in the mass of wolves. Mother bursts back after me, fury bubbling in her eyes. She kicks out with her powerful back legs, knocking two right off. She kicks two more times in the blink of an eye, knocking three off, but not enough to send te whimpering. One jumps at her, tearing a large deep gash on the side of her neck. She rears up on her hind legs and smashes down with amazing speed and intensity. Her hooves smash into a wolves skull with a satisfying crunch. I try to roll to get the last two wolves off of my self, but can only get one. I struggle to stand as its razor sharp teeth dig into my rump. I buck repeatedly but the wolf doesn't budge. Mean while mother is facing off with the other five. They aim for the throat and year at her back. She kicks and jumps, rolling over and biting. It's funny how as soon as father began to come back, 11 more wolves ran at us. ELEVEN! It was the biggest pack I had ever seen. Their eyes whee blood shot and full of maliciousness as the jumped at us. Five for father, four for me, two for mom. It's brutal. I am beaten and bloody, my vision is blurring. I snap at the wolves, run in circles, try EVERYTHING to get them away. In the corner of my eyes I see three of mothers now seven wolves running away whimpering. That was when mother made her mistake. She turned to chase them off, and te biggest wolf barrel rolls her. He smashes into her, causing her to shriek in surprise. Her legs buckle and she collapses, and one wolf jumps at her leg. There is a loud snap, and she bellows in agony. I try running for her, but am swarmed by four wolves. "MOM! MOOOOM!" I scream. "GET UP! GET UP!" But she doesn't. Another wolf propels forward, and I can see its teeth shining seconds before they are in her throat. Her brilliant blue eyes seem to get the life sucked out of them imediatly. The gloss over, and she stops fighting. "Mom!" I yell. Rage coarses in my veins, and pure adrenaline kicks in. I burst forward, trampling 3 of the thirteen wolves remaining. Then as one jumps at me from behind it is almost as if I had eyes in the back of my head. My hooves smack him dead in the center of his skull, sending him flying. Nine more wolves. I grab a wolf ontop of mother by the scruff, and throw him with all my might at a near by tree. Eight wolves remaining. With my front hooves I smash a wolf off of mum with all my force. Seven. The next one to jump at me is greeted by being trucked, then trampled, bitten, and kicked. When I look up father has scared or killed off all of his wolves too. I collapse next to her, burying my head in her neck. "Moma, please wake up..." I had cried. And sobbed. That was the year I left the herd.
I shake my head, clearing the horrendous memory from my head.
Now I am turning seven. New herd, new life. I haven't seen papa in what seems like forever. I look into the crystal looking sky, almost as if I'm searching for my mother. "Hey mom. Are you... Watching me? Are you proud of who I am?" I ask as a huge gust of wind nicks me off my feet. I stumble to get up. "Mom?!?!" The wind now is a nice breeze tickling my ears as it seems to whistle and whisper words.
"Happy birthday" it says. "I love you." "Be happy" "so proud" it calls to me.
"Mom..." I say as a warm feeling blossoms in my heart. With another big swoosh of wind the leaves fly, swirling and twirling all around me. Suddenly the close together, making the figure of a horse, exactly like my mother. The leaves move together, almost making me believe she is real... That she is actually there. "Mom!" I call out, and the leaves begin to move. She is running up the hill. Before I can even move she is at the top. She rears up on her hind legs, and light shines beautifully around her. Then she jumps, and seems to float down to me. Out mussels are so close when the leaves explode and rap around me. I stare at their color, their perfection, and can't help but smile. Running up the hill, I feel the wind tickle my face as my mane and tail fly out behind me. When I get to the top I look down and see hoof prints exactly where the leaf-version of my mother was. My chest blossoms with a feeling of happiness I've haven't felt since mother died.
The rest of the day I frolicked and played like I did as a young filly. The other mares gave me looks and never mentioned my birthday. Why should I care? Its not like they tell me who to be? I splash in the water when they drink, and laugh when they tell me to stop. When our lead yells at me and so I mumble, "who died and made you in charge." under my breathe. Its a funny story because usually mares fight to be lead, but the mares in this herd think she is a good 'leader'. Not me. Shes an okay mare, but not cut out to be lead. I'm not saying I am, but she defiantly isn't.
Once I calm down I move away from the rest of the herd, picking daisies. It became a weird habit of mine after mama died. I pick more today than I usually do. I flick my ears and lift my head searching for the lead mare, and when I don't see her or any other mares I walk to the stream. I let the cool water splash off of my legs and onto my stomach. Looking up at the sky I see brilliant colors that aren't usually there. Splashes of spring green, dark blue, sky blue, indigo, purple, navy blue, and royal blue are displayed in the sky. I let go of the daisies, letting the wind pick them up. The petals are ripped from the flower, causing an explosion of white. The petals dot the sky and fly in my face. It was the most beautiful things I had ever seen.
"Hey, Muse." I hear Russet (made up), my stallion say.
I turn around to see him carrying a ballon with colors exactly like the sky. I has a party hat on, and an extra one for me. The last thing he carries are daisies. My heart melts.
"You really didn't have to! Oh Russ, its amazing! I love it!" I squeal quietly.
He places the party hat on my head and ties the ballon to my tail. "But I did." Then he begins to sing happy birthday. He has a terrible singing voice, and he knows it. He bursts out laughing before he can finish, and so do I.
"Oh Russ!" I laugh with him as both of us struggle to regain our breath.
"Happy Birthday Muse." He says and nussels me before he leaves.
I smile and walk out of the stream. Underneath my favorite tree, the biggest willow tree, I lay allowing the soft comforting calls of the wind lull me to sleep. It was the best day of my life.
