Orginally Zolekk thought that chameleon's were kinda cool, but then one tried to catch a fly that was buzzing around Zolekk's head... and missed... The chameleon's tounge went straight into Zolekk's ear, thus freaking him out and ensuring Zolekk's fear of the chameleon. It wasn't until later that he discovered chameleons can change their color, which only made Zoleek more fearful of an unexpected "attack".

Why is he afraid of it? He is afraid of these little cuties because they had pelted him with acorn when he was just a colt. This happened many times which caused his great fear of squirrels.
