JBD Name:
Persephone
Gender:
Female
Favorite season:
Fall
Why is it their favorite season?:
Persephone likes to fancy her own colors represent the season of fall, all the lovely reds, yellows, oranges, and browns. The leaves cover the trees and ground, able to be swept into large piles and jumped into, thrown and scattered everywhere. There is just brilliant colors everywhere, and she has a collection of the most beautiful and unique leaves she finds each year. The sunsets in the fall are also just wonderful, breathtaking sights, the colors stretching and blending with the ones on the horizon. The days are also usually just perfect- not too hot, not too cold, though there are a few days that are warmer, and just lovely for laying in a sunny patch. There aren't many storms, or near as many rainy days as there are in the spring, which is quite nice- nothing to keep her inside. The nights are cool and lovely, perfect for lying out and gazing up at the fall constelations.
The coming of fall also brings the month of october, which brings her favorite holiday- halloween! All the pumpkin carving, the dressing up, the festivities... who doesn't love it? She loves to dress up and decorate every spare inch with carved pumpkins, even though they may not look all that great. Going out and having hay rides and such is always her favorite part, getting to go out with freinds and make new ones.
Persephone also loves how her name relates to the season. She translates the greek myth a little differently than most- instead of Persephone being the bringer of spring and summer, Persephone likes to think of her namesake as the bringer of fall and winter instead. The myth goes as so-
Persephone was the daughter of Demeter and Zues, and was the godess of growth. As she was tending her garden, Hades rose from the underworld and stole her away, vowing to make her his queen. Demeter went to Zues as soon as she heard, demanding he plead the case with his brother and make him return her daughter. When he refused to do so, she vowed nothing would grow on earth while her daughter was away. Zues sent her away, and three days passed until the lamenting of the people made him call her again. He told her that he would send Hermes, the messenger, to Hades to return with Persephone, but if any food had passed her lips, she would have to stay- for that was the law, and he could not change it.
Persephone, in the meantime, while disliking her stay in the bleak underworld at first, and would not eat even a bite, she did grow to like it. She was amazed at how attentive and gentle he was, and grew to like it, slowly. She was in the garden he had dedicated to her on the very day Hermes was sent for her, when a little boy showed himself, eating a juicy, seedy fruit- a pomegranate. He encouraged her to eat- no one was around anyway- and she did. Six seeds passed her lips before she heard the trumpeting of Hermes, and rushed to him, while the boy rushed to Hades to show him the eaten fruit. Triumphant, Hades refused to release her, but Zues decreed that since she had eaten only six seeds, she would stay for six months every year. Demeter vowed nothing would grow in the months that her daughter was not with her, therefor, we have fall and winter.
Most interpert this then that Persephone brings spring and summer when she returns to Demeter, though the Persephone in question likes to think of it more the other way.
