Lumi hated his name; it wasn't exactly traditional. He'd tried to convince his parents to change it, but they told him how he was their special light and his name meant "filled with light". He always thought that once he grew up, he'd change it himself.
One day a friend, Toby, went missing. After searching the village and surrounding areas, Lumi asked about checking the far side of the woods. He was told it was too cold, too far and dangerous to search. Toby knew better than to go there. In Lumi's mind, they'd already searched everywhere else, so that had to be where Toby was. If no one else would look there, then Lumi would.
Lumi set off for the far side of the woods. Toby had to be here. He started to notice changes in the woods, so he sang as he went to keep his mind off of the changes. The trees were thicker and more tightly packed. The light wasn't so bright and the further he went, the colder it got.
Lumi pressed on, as the light faded with the coming night. The winds began to howl and blow harder. Soon it began to snow. Softly at first and then harder until it was almost a blizzard of sharp stinging ice crystals. Lumi shook his fleece to puff it up a bit more to hopefully keep himself warmer as he continued his search.
Soon after that, he found Toby curled up against a tree trying to get away from the snow and wind. It was too dark to try and head back home, so Lumi and Toby huddled together under the tree. Lumi tucked his wings as best he could over the two of them for warmth and waited for morning.
It was a long cold night, but they made it. When Lumi stood to leave, he discovered his wings had frozen over from all the tiny icy crystals hitting them all night. "Oh well," he thought, "at least Toby's safe." They slowly made their way back home. As they did, Lumi could feel the ice crystals melt from his wings. Everywhere an ice crystal had been, a tiny sparkle still remained. His wings were covered in them. Lumi loved their look. He also learned to love his name. Lumi also means "snow", a fitting reminder of how his wings came to be sparkly.
