backstory
there was a bitter taste in my mouth, i rolled over, cool grass brushed against my nose. what? i tried to shoot up but my body lagged behind my brain, heavy were my whole body felt heavy. i must've been drugged, i couldn't remember what happened before this moment though. i tried to think as i lay there, i was praying at the shrine.. but i was alone, at least i thought i was..
dear gods this hurts! i let out a soft groan as i rolled onto my back, trying to way myself up more i move my tail. heavy?.. i felt something attached to it but i still couldn't raise my head. i moved my tail again, i heard the soft clinking i knew that sound, it was the traditional lantern that i had with me. i still couldn't connect the dots, i lay on my back with my eyes closed and listened to the breeze rustle through the grass and trees around me. the cool night air filled my lungs, my eyes slowly opened.
how did i get here?..
a soft breeze rusted the trees that shaded a figure cloaked in a white robe holding golden beads that glistened in the sunlight, they had previously been meditating when their peaceful state was disrupted by the sounds of laughter and the splashing of water. their eyes slowly opened to the view of a small child chasing the koi fish a few feet away, the squeals of delight brought a soft smile to their lips. the warm summer breeze seemed to play with the windchimes just as the child played with the water, stirring them up. they swung joyfully from the shrine clanging softly. the melody floated through the air as the figure stood up and moved towards the child, chuckling softly under his breath. the small boy looked up to him sheepishly. a lily pad had found it's way onto his head, the older individual bent down and picked the lily pad off of the boy, placing it gently back into the water. "remember what i've told you Εji.. koi fish are revered creatures that are to be treated with respect, not to be played with.. come now it's time for your lessons." his voice was gentle but carried great weight with it, the boy only simply nodded and followed them back into the shrine, looking longingly back over his shoulder at the little pond.
that's right the old man took me in.. they thought i was a demon though
a sharp cry split the air, tears streaming down the girls face as she held her arm against her staring wide eyed. in front of her stood Εji his teeth gritted into a snarl and his eyes wild and alert. the rustle of cloth and soft clanking noise announced the entrance of the priest, he opened the door and looked to Εji there was pain in his gaze. he touched the boy's shoulder giving it a soft squeeze, the anger in Εji's face subsided and his head lulled, shamefully he looked at the floor and griped his shirt. out of control again.. he bit his lip fighting back hot tears. the priest apologized profusely but as they were leaving the room he heard the exchanging of words, "that child was born of a demon.. cursed that shrine is from his rage, he aught to be locked up somewhere.." the words were not lost on Εji, he felt a pang in his chest. this wasn't the first instance of violence and wouldn't be the last.
i couldn't see what he was trying to do for me until it was too late. i'm so sorry Tetsuya.
there was tension in the air of the shrine, Εji lay panting on the floor holding his face as he stared at the priest, his gaze seething with anger but his ears were ringing. the white robed figure spoke seemingly out of breath as well, "why don't you accept this fate Εji! i only want the best for your but you cannot accept this gift i wish to give to you, i have been trying to train you all of your life for this and yet you deny your path!" he spoke his voice booming in the empty shrine with only the boy to hear, but the boy was no longer a child playing in the pond on a summers day, he was a man rejecting the prayers and teachings of the priest. tears filled Tetsuya's eyes as he had this realization, this was no longer his little boy. Εji took this time to speak in return, "to hell with your teachings old man! this is what you want, not what i want, i never asked for this!" his voice cracked in emotion and strain. Tetsuya gritted his teeth, "you are a disgrace Εji, if you no longer wish to become a priest then leave! you are no longer welcome if you turn your back to the spirits!" he snapped pointing towards the door as his face turned from the figure on the floor. Εji inhaled sharply his chest felt tight, he picked himself up and walked quickly towards the door not even turning his head to look at Tetsuya.
that was the last time i would see you alive.. i regret so much.. Εji bit his lip and let the tears stream down his face, running down his cheeks and dripping into the grass underneath him. in remembering himself he had gained strength, finally able to sit up he used his sleeve to wipe away his tears and he looked around. his eyes caught something bright in front of him, he stared at the rippling image, it was a reflection of the moon on a ponds surface, his ears opened to the sound of windchimes as the trees rustled in the breeze.. i'm in the garden.. Εji took a deep breath and crossed his legs, bowing his head and began to pray.
