Vela: The Sails of the Mighty Argo Navis

Argo Navis, or simply Argo, is a fictional ship from Greek mythology. Jason, the leader of a group of heroes known as the Argonauts, captained this mighty ship on a quest with his men in search of something known as the Golden Fleece. The ancient city of Lulcus was taken over by an unlawful king named Pelias, and he swore he would give up his spot as king if Jason returned with the Golden Fleece. The king thought Jason would perish on his journey, but Jason and his crew would succeed in their journey and bring home the Golden Fleece.

A large constellation was named after the Argo Navis. The constellation ended up being so large that it was separated into three smaller constellations, each named after a different major part of the ship. There is Carina (the keel), Puppis (the stern), and Vela (the sails).



I chose this name for this floc because it first reminded me of both the space and the sea. I wanted to choose something that correlated with both, so I considered all the constellations I knew that had a story related to the sea. Argo Navis has a lot of potential for this, as it has three constellations and a large story behind it. When deciding which of the three constellations or Argo I wanted to pick, I was stuck between Carina and Vela. Looking at the design of the floc, the waves feel to me like they're almost blowing in the wind, if that makes sense? and so I thought it would be best to use Vela for this, as it represents the sails that direct the wind to push a ship on a great adventure.
