Lark is a walking contradiction. He has soft colors but sharp claws. He has beautiful fins yet a grin out of someone's nightmare. His name too is a contradiction. Lark is named after larkspur, a beautiful blue flower that represents strong love, positivity, dignity and grace. The kind of flower that one would expect a beautiful and noble kel to be named for. However larkspur is also lethally toxic and has no known treatment. The kind of flower that one would associate with a monster. And being a living contradiction means contradicting expectations forced upon him. And growing up, that can be awfully confusing. No matter how he acted, either with compassion or rage, someone was disappointed because he wasn't living up to their expectations. How can anyone learn what is right or wrong, good or evil, when everything they do is met with at least some negative response?

❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈❈

When Lark was young he was innocent as all youth are. He was naïve and hopeful, a dreamer in every way. He would imagine faraway lands that he could swim to. Palaces of coral, tides that reflected stardust, mythical creatures who had watched the rise of life. Lark was often found writing about these imagined places, often in the form of poetry and doodles. He didn't have the patience back then to write full stories. He would often show his friends his work and their reactions were split just as everyone else's expectations. "It was beautiful and creative!" or "Shouldn't it be darker and reflect you?" As a pup Lark ignored the conflicting expectations and latched on to those who praised his creativity. But as he grew up, he began to notice the never-ending animosity towards himself. Others no longer hid their hatred now that he was older. Faced with such an abrupt shift, Lark was thrown and his art reflected it. His poems and doodles of mythical lands turned to into dark vents and desperate pleadings. Poetry and journaling his confusion and pain to cope. But it did not help in the end. Once someone saw his writing, saw his pain and anger, it was over. Those who had been calling him a monster for years were validated, and those who though he was a creative soul were disturbed and disappointed. There was no one left standing beside Lark.

His naivety and hope turned into jaded cynicism. His dreams crushed into the tiniest, most hidden corner of his heart. Seeing no other option, Lark dove into the sea and vanished. He did not want to make things worse. For many years he simply wandered the seas, still dreaming of magical lands, but only the magic had turned more simple. He wanted a place to call home, and friends who understood him. He wanted to be able to continue writing and drawing. And he wanted to have people enjoy what he created. Eventually he found his way into the bay of an old city. The cityscape reflected in the dark waves sparked his imagination so he stayed for a time. It was there that he met his first true friend. A kel named Viper, who saw the contradiction in Larks' art, as well as in himself and instead of feeling disturbed, accepted it. He encouraged Lark to keep creating his art, and ensured him that here, in this city, others would find joy and validation in it. For this was a city of contradictions and grey morals. A place of misfits and rejects. A place they all were able to call home. Because when everyone around you is a little crazy, wacky, or obsessed with some random legend, an artist of contradictions fits right in. Lark was finally home.

Writing.

"Hear yee! hear yee! come one, come all! King Brink Approaches!"

Brink shook his head and smiled, he looked around as keldines of all ages stared at his approach.
His large tail and glimmering eyes caught the attention of many, lots of young kelds heard whispering to their mothers or fathers in uncertainy.
Brink smiled. "step back my soldiers. Thank you"
A small group of keldines stared in his direction, some star struck in his presence un able to speak.
"Hello fellow keldines. I am King Brink, warrior and protector of these lands-"

A strong looking keldine looked at him with uncertainy.
"Sorry to cut you off 'king' but who are you? and if you're the protector of these lands then where have you been all this time? Ever since I was a tiny pup I have lived here and never heard of such a name nor position before. Why are you here and what do you want?"

Brink giggled and nodded pushing himself past his guards who stood at the ready, swishing their tails.
"Stand down." All the guards sat and nodded.
"Young sir what is your name?"
The keldine looked stern without a movement said "My name is Nova."

"Well Nova, it seems you may not have heard the old folks tales about me, you might not know that I am pretty old actually compared to what you all think. I was once called 'The Silent Warrior'. I have protected generation after generation of keldine who live upon these lands. My tail and fins enable me to fight while in water, I have fought off many of enemy over my years. Most of these keldines I have never seen before, you're all so young and strong I haven't had to come out of my hiding place for years, until now."

Deadly nightshade. Beauty of a monster, morbid yet fascinating, a look will leave you breathless yet a touch is your grave. A sweet scent that tempts you into its grasp, cruel and unkind, yet the sweet deception of its voice beacons you, a siren to your death. Perhaps it would be better to compare it to an invasive vine, cold and rough, that twists and twists slowly strangling the life from what it clings to. Yet although you know it’s a beautiful facade hiding death, you are a moth to a flame, you can’t help but be attracted.

It is said that everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later...

    Image

A fluffy sea-keldine was shaking his tail nervously. His head, majestically crowned with a pair of coral antlers, was shaking as if he couldn't believe his ears. Then, he stood up suddenly, narrowing his eyes with despise. His voice echoed like a thunder in the room:

"You lost IT?!? After I told you to be careful?! How do you even dare to come here and look into my eyes? Get out!"

Having never seen his king so angry, the servant tried to excuse himself. "I beg for your forgiveness, your majesty..."
    "Out NOW!" shouted Nereus.

    Image

The blood drained from his face and his body started shaking. A wave of contradictory thoughts overflowed in his mind, leaving him to face powerless the feeling of despair. He started panicking, wondering who could have stolen that object and why. Fighting very hard to clear his head of all those meaningless scenarios, Nereus regained his characteristic calmness. The regret of his exaggerated reaction towards his loyal keldine sprouted deep down into his soul. "I will apologise later, now I have to find a way to prevent this chaos from being unleashed" he thought.

    Image

What was the missing object and why it was so important you may wonder.

    Image

Nereus wasn't always the keldine he is now. He was, in fact, just an ordinary one as the many others. For this reason, he respects his subordinates very much and tries to offer them the best conditions. Back then, he was known as Konan, a common wanderer famous for his remarkable swordsmanship.

Born in a modest family, Konan was permanently on his own, striving to earn his living. Although he was honourable by nature, he had often to lie, decieve and manipulate in order to survive.
After he built his own life, Konan returned home, but his family wasn't there anymore. All he could find was a letter addressed to him.

His mother stated that he was, in fact, adopted and that he must find his real family as soon as possible. According to the letter, he was found , sad, lonely and vulnerable on a rainy night. They couldn't let him outside, in cold, so they took him home with them.

Being the only child, his encounter was always considered a blessing by his mother. That is why she was constantly reluctant towards this subject. At the first glance, Konan doubted that what he was reading was true, yet, he started the search for his possible real family. He took one of the books to hide the letter inside, then a secret passage opened.

Visibly urprised, Konan debating whether to enter or not. He was afraid not to remain trapped there.
After a long debate, he enrered in the obscurity of the tunnel. It smelled like mold and wet rocks, yet, some fresh air was coming from somewhere.
At the end of the mysterious corridor, all he could find were the portraits of two keldines, a written story and a small chest.

    Image

"Once upon a time there lived the most beautiful keldine princess that ever existed ever. She had everything a mortal could desire, maybe even a bit more. As nothing is perfect, she discovered what was the only thing she hadn't possessed already- the love.

Her palace got crowded in suitors from the all corners of the world, yet, her heart was secretly belonging to a prince of the water already. Her father compelled her on choosing a wealthy husband with good reputation, but she was unhappy.

One day, tired of others telling her what to do, the princess met the love of her life. They sacrificed everything for some moments together, then disappeared, forever."

    Image

Although the story was shortly presented, it was more than enough for Konan to understand who his parents were and what happened to them.
His sight moved to the little locked chest. It was the first time he saw it, but it was so familiarly looking. A paw shape was painted on it, carefully and visible emotional, he put one of his paws over the drawing. The markings started glowing and a click symbolized that the chest opened.

Inside, he found an impressive diamond, polished perfectly, embodying a spectacular one of a kind necklace. He was sure that it once belonged to his mother. Next to it, a short note saying:

    Image

    "Dear Nereus,

I am sure that you will find this one day, and you will put The Eye of the Sea to a safe place. It is a very powerful artifact that confers the ability of controlling the sea and the storms. We both know how dangerous it would be to fall on wrong hands. For this reason, I assured you are the only able to open this chest and retrieve it.
I am sure we will meet again one day, son.

    With love,

    your mother

    Image

When he tried it on, an ice cold sensation overwhelmed his body, from the top of the nose to the end of the tail, as if he was just splashed with freezing water. Some translucent fins were decorating his tail and front paws, with unusually long claws.

Nereus, that saw his face reflected in the shiny chest, seemed unimpressed by his change of aspect, as if he was expecting already. He noticed that he was still able to breathe, which was thw only thing surprised him a bit.

Nereus was sure that his place was in the ocean, her mother's favourite place, so she choose that kind of life. He was on cloud nine since he was able to explore the water depths without drowning.

The marine creatures recognized him as king, probably because of the necklace's powers. Nereus took it off and put it back in the chest, considering it was too dangerous to keep it within everyone's reach, but now it was gone. Whatever it was, he must find and get back the necklace.
    [1000 words]
