A Short Story
Once upon a time, there was a perfect kalon named Oralie. She never messed up, always acted kindly, never asked for anything, and had a big smile on her face all the time. At least, that's who she wanted to be. She wanted to be someone like that, but she wasn't. Every day she tried to keep up the persona of perfection because she wanted to have friends. But she never made any. Most people thought she was too "good" for them or that she was "insufferably nice." Oralie wanted to scream at everyone and say, "I'm not too good for you! I just want to be friends!", but that would ruin her. Every day, Oralie was lonely and wished someone cared.
One day, she had overheard two kalons talking about her. One was new to school, and the other was a friend.
"So, who's the girl in front of us? What's she like?" the new kid, Leo, asked.
"Oh, that's Oralie. She's annoyingly perfect to the point where she never messes up. It's honestly daunting being behind the model student," the other kid, Riley, replied. Oralie was almost in tears. She only wanted to be "perfect" so she wouldn't have any flaws that would drive people away.
"Well, is she at least nice? Should I try to befriend her?" Leo asked.
"Well, of course she's nice. She's Little Miss Perfect, and there is nothing that will ever be wrong with her," Riley said. "It's almost like she's daring you to try to be better than her." At that point Oralie turned to them, tears in her eyes.
"I'm not trying to be better than people! I'm not perfect! I just try to be so... someone will actually care," Oralie whispered.
"What? You don't have any friends?" Riley asked. "But I thought-"
"Well, you thought wrong," Oralie sobbed.
"H-hey, it's okay! I don't have many friends either. U-um, would you want to be friends, then?" Leo squeaked. When Oralie kept crying, Leo tried to console her. "You don't have to be perfect! I'm sure that people would like you even if you weren't! I mean, I think you seem like a nice person," he said.
"Really? Would y-you want to be friends with someone like me?" Oralie whispered. "Or are you just saying that to make me stop crying?"
"Really. I mean, I'd love to be friends!" Leo said.
"Thank you!" Oralie said, and gave him a huge hug. Riley stood there a little awkwardly.
"I'm sorry about the things I said about you. I had no idea that you felt that way," he said, looking at the ground.
"It's okay. I don't hate you or anything," Oralie said, giving him a small smile. "If you want, we could be friends too. You seem like kind of a loner."
"Okay," he replied. With that one word, Oralie made her first friends. Maybe they became friends out of pity, but over time, they'd grow to really care about one another.
