The Preservation of Dreams Through Potions and Dreamcatchers

Postby f1owercrown » Sun Aug 04, 2019 5:50 pm

Seated in front row, you're handed a paper by your fellow scholars seated beside you. You click your pen as you read through the paper: "Thesis Presentation: Criteria for Judging" is typed in a large, bold font on top. Below are blank spaces to add in your name, your position in the magic industry, the date today, etc. After writing down on most of the blanks, you reach the last one that stated, "Name of Thesis Presenter & Thesis Topic Presented".

It's late that you notice someone's taken the stage already.

"Good morning, esteemed magic scholars, professors, and guests here with me today. If I may start?"

It must be her, you think. She inhales deeply before speaking.

"Have you ever had a dream you can't remember? Have you ever been frustrated because you know that dream made you feel good, yet you couldn't remember an ounce of it minutes after waking up? Around ninety percent of dreams are forgotten within the first ten minutes of waking up. What a shame, I can hear some of you saying. Maybe some of you have dream catchers as well that supposedly "catch" your dreams when in fact, they've been capitalized into decorative furniture. Well, fret not; I've created a potion that could have you remember your dreams and even visualize and preserve it in real life!"

You hear the audience in whispers of curiosity and disbelief.

"I'm Lucy, and today I will be talking about my thesis presentation entitled 'The Preservation of Dreams Through Potions and Dreamcatchers'."

"This is how the concept goes: a potion is first ingested and gets processed by the digestive system. Absorption of nutrients plus other ingredients of the potion occurs, transferring them to the blood stream. Eventually, as blood is circulated through the body, the potion floats with them too, until they get to the brain and brain stem where the potion is absorbed by the cells. Once the potion is absorbed by your brain, it stays for a while, around 2 days at most, while your brain mechanics work and you have a dream."

"Once you get a dream, this dream reacts with the absorbed potion, creating a sort of "gaseous" entity that stores all memories of the dream. This potion-dream complex then moves back to the blood stream and is released like carbon dioxide: it passes through the lungs and out of your breath."

"This is where your dreamcatcher comes in: once the gaseous potion-dream complex escapes your body, it floats for a while before dissipating into the atmosphere. You'll want to have a dreamcatcher hanging nearby, because once the complex comes near the dreamcatcher, it gets entangled in its webstrings. Your dream can then be viewed from the dreamcatcher just by shaking the web! Isn't that fascinating?"

The crowd goes in whispers again, this time of impressiveness. You also find yourself intrigued by this potion.

"Here is a list of my ingredients! I'll explain them one by one."

She flashes a slide with the complete list of ingredients and the instructions for them.

"Rosemary: commonly used for separation of a specific knowledge from its worldly entity. I found out that both dreams and knowledge shared similarities in structure, especially with both being influenced heavily by the mind. Also allows a deep and restful sleep for better dream-making.

Fairy Wings: for fairies are attracted to wishes and dreams; this, along with rosemary, ensures that the knowledge to be extracted are dreams and nothing else.

Werewolf Hair: as werewolves are affected by the moon, this ingredient helps the potion become active during nighttime. It ensures that the potion will work most efficiently when dreams are being made and processed.

Bat Fur: increases potion activity during nighttime, just like the werewolf hair.

Lavender and Passionflower: both help one enter a deep sleep so as to not interrupt dream-making.

Copal: an ingredient used for astral projection, this helps create a potion-dream complex that can get entangled in dreamcatchers.

Anise: an optional ingredient if you want to lessen your chances of having nightmares."

The choice of ingredients for the potion were on-point for you. You give her a satisfactory mark in the 'Materials and Methodology' section.

"For my test results," she continues, "All were satisfactory with accordance to the latest ingredients and amounts I just mentioned. I made a random sampling of people across campus who gave me permission to use them as test subjects; don't worry, I always made sure not to use dangerous ingredients, and I was prepared for a reverse potion any time something bad happened. All reported to have their dreams being caught in the webs of their dreamcatchers after drinking the potion. I also found the following details: that the dreamcatcher be at most 5 meters away from the person; that the dream cannot be separated from the web of the dreamcatcher and that the strings must be replaced if you want to capture a new dream; that the potion lasts only 2 days before the cells of the brain break down the potion and consume it; and that the only side effect noted was minor amnesia, possibly due to the large portion of rosemary in the potion. Fret not though; all memories of the very few test subjects that caught amnesia (5% of the total number of subjects) came back after an hour or so."

"I'd recommend finding a way for the potion to stay longer in the brain, because not everyone has dreams every day. Including an ingredient that can induce dreams is also recommended, so one can make the most out of the potion."

"So, that's it for my presentation! I'd like to thank the magical sciences academic group for greatly helping me in my research, and I hope to publish this thesis one day so I can share with everyone my wonderful potion!"

As she gives a bow, the audience behind you applauds. You give her a reassuring nod, as if to say that you too were impressed with her study.

"Are there any questions?" She asks, looking at your panel. Your colleague beside you clears his throat before speaking into the mic.

"Yes, uh, this potion is wonderful! But I'd like to ask, of what significance is this besides a recreational thing?"

She smiles back at your colleague, seemingly prepared to answer that question. "Memory," Lucy said. "The field of magical sciences that deal with memory are very few, because people tend to think that memory potions solve everything when they don't. Memory potions are just those that rattle your brain for a bit to remember what you studied the night before, or what food you ate last weekend. Memory potion are a solution to minor problems, but what of those that have actual memory problems, such as amnesia? I don't think the magical sciences have tackled these problems in-depth, so I offer a way to tap into the subconscious and bring it to the conscious and beyond."

"Think of the implications this study can have! Remembering will be much easier, memories could be replayed, and we could reminisce in many great things and preserve them without fearing of forgetting. False memories can also be avoided in the event of witness cases and such."

After she speaks, another one of your colleagues asks, "Do you plan on putting a patent on this if ever your thesis gets published?"

"Definitely not, sir!" She says. "I want many to benefit from this study, in hopes to further the research on memory, or at least make someone's day by having them remember their dream. It's the little things that brighten your day, really"

You then tap into your mic for one last question. "Pardon me for the personal question," you say, "But what has been your inspiration for making this?"

Lucy staggers for a moment, probably not prepared for quite a personal question.

"Y-You don't have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable," you say, as your colleague seemingly judge you for such an informal question in a thesis defense.

"No sir, it's alright!" Lucy piped up, "I'm more than happy to tell my story. I mean, my grandmother... kind of has retrograde amnesia, so she has trouble remembering past events. She knows herself, but she gets a lot of things jumbled up, my name and identity included. I guess it's a different feeling when you're close to someone who doesn't remember you well, right? So like, one day when she did actually remember me, she told me that if I had the time, I should do some research about memory and stuff because she hates being confused by the new people that come and go. Actually, heh, the only people in the house were my family, so no new people were coming in and out; she just forgot us every time and she wished she could remember people properly like she used to. So here I am... trying to tap into the subconscious to help advance memory magic and research so old people can remember their loved ones again. It makes things a little less painful when you grow older, I suppose."

And at that point the audience applauds again, this time louder than the last. You wonder if your last question contributed to that.

Lucy speaks a 'Thank you!' in the mic, smiling before her inspired audience before exiting the stage.

Meanwhile, you glance at your evaluation sheet, one which you haven't been filling up for a long time because you were too engrossed in her study to pay attention to you grading her. You write her title, 'The Preservation of Dreams Through Potions and Dreamcatchers', followed by satisfactory check marks.

    ...

You hope she preserves her dreams (and aspirations) as well.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

There are many times at night when I cannot fall asleep at all. I suffer from insomnia. But it’s more than that. It’s as if it were a curse.

Why can’t I sleep?

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

ImageI am an apothecary and a mage. You don’t need to know where I live, but it is in a somewhat small house, and it is somewhere in a city. There are two floors and a small cellar, although the upper story is much smaller. The main walls are mostly stone, and the floors are covered in wooden boards. I have a lot of books, with at least small shelves, or makeshift shelves, in every room. That might sound chaotic, but remember that I don’t have many rooms.

I also collect things, such as plants and fungi, feathers, antlers, and bones I find. Of course, I also have a store of known and possible ingredients, mostly herbs, roots, and fungi, but also things which would be considered more special. I also have a deep fascination for death and dead things. So I also have a collection of dead things, mostly skulls and smaller creatures such as birds, lizards, and mice. Some kalons find them unsettling, but to me, they are beautiful. I live alone, and prefer it that way. I do have a raven and many, many frogs in my house, but I haven’t seen as much of the raven lately. She is often outside flying freely, somewhere.

I specialize in making medicine and potions, which I sell for a living, but mostly the former. I never had an actual mentor, so I have mostly had to learn from books and from trial and error. At some point, when I was younger, I did have a tutor, but that I am afraid that kalon is gone now. Before his untimely departure, that kalon had said that I was precociously talented for my age, and had the potential to go quite far in the future, and I believe this fully. I am also passionate about medicine. I have a small collection of medical books and herbal guides. I think that if I weren’t a mage I would focus more on the medical field.

I spend a lot of my time that isn’t dedicated to medicines and potions reading, writing, or outside im the city or forests nearby. Sometimes I travel farther, but I usually don’t leave for more than a few days. When at home I also like to spend time organizing my books and collections, and cleaning; and paying attention to my frogs. I do have some friends, mostly closer to acquaintances, but still, even if some of my patrons seem to think I’m a complete recluse. I have even had one customer try to adopt me, who I eventually had to ask to leave, and who seemed very confused when I failed to take the offer seriously. I was a lot younger. This seemed hilarious at the time—I don’t know. I probably could have handled that more professionally, but I digress.

It may not seem that way, but I am actually fairly busy, because of my dedication to my craft and because I have to support myself completely. On a few occasions, and when my business was just starting out, I would have to do some other work to make ends meet. Mostly cleaning, sewing, and repairing things—none of these things I’m passionate about, but money is money.

I have been quite unfortunate in life thus far. Seemingly a lot of bad things have happened to me without reason. I suppose I’m mostly happy regardless, but sometimes I find myself feeling sad or melancholic.

Image

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Notes:
-Has severe insomnia and often struggles to fall asleep, or can’t fall asleep, sometimes stays awake for days, and by then sometimes she just collapses from exhaustion, which can be very detrimental
-She isn’t always unable to sleep, but when she can’t, it can be quite severe
-Sometimes hallucinates and starts hearing voices due to sleep deprivation, or can’t work properly, and sometimes her hands start to shake
-Her record is 4 days.
-Favorite potion to make is one that helps her sleep, but it’s hard to make/requires hard to find ingredients, so she doesn’t make it as often as she would like
-Looking for a way to cure her insomnia permanently.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Despite a majority if what I make being intended for healing and health benefits, my favorite potion to make is one to overcome my inability to sleep, a potion I concocted completely from scratch. I am not able to make it as often as I like because some of the ingredients are scarce, and it’s time intensive, but I make it as often as I can, because being unable to sleep interferes with my work.

The recipe is always changing, as a number of the preferred ingredients are extremely rare, and I am often forced to improvise. I have rewritten this recipe again and again, scrawling different scrap paper I have lying about. I have to admit that not all my possessions are neatly organized. Some of them are pushed off to the side or shoved into drawers and chests, and I am sometimes unable to find what I am looking for if I forget where I put something. I am afraid that happened some time ago with one of my recipes for this potion. I won’t say it’s lost, exactly—my house is not large, and there are only so many places a slip of paper could be hiding—but I likely will not be seeing it soon. However, there are certain ingredients in this potion which invariably stay the same.

Image

-water
-extract of wormwood
-1 sprig of lavender
-a small red-capped fungi [which I have only seen around here]
-12 moss rhizoids [roots]
-20 spruce needles
-leaves of valerian
-gravel, 1/8 of an ounce
-Shavings of a stag’s antlers
-frog slime [from a live frog, of course] 1/2 of an ounce
-the petals of a dying crimson rose [only the petals, as the stem or sepals will ruin the entire batch]
-secret ingredients 1, 2, and 3
-special ingredient 1
-special ingredient 2

The brew glows faintly when finished, seeming to have a weak light emanating from it’s core. A weak warmth issues from the pot. Somehow, the smell is weak. It runs through the paws easily. You can’t quite say what the color is, but you will remember its distinct shade long after seeing it.

This is not a sleeping potion per se, but it allows me to become sedated enough that I am able to fall asleep. I have never actually given it to anyone else, but I would if someone needed it badly enough.

The measurements depend on the dosage and the strength needed. As in most potions, there are a few ingredients which carry most of the effect, and others which help activate the main ingredients’ power or hold a small effect alone. Usually the ingredients have little effect in and of themselves, but together they are elevated. Of course, there are also inactive ingredients, a common one being water. I won’t tell you how to make this potion, because you won’t need to make it. I have also censored some of the ingredients. I am sorry, but I cannot give away the full recipe, as this potion could become highly dangerous to the drinker if modified in certain ways.

Remember, I do sell potions if there is anything you need, but not a love potion. I sometimes have customers come in and ask for a love potion, seemingly unconcerned about the ethics of consent and free will, but I always have to turn them away. Little do they know no one has actually concocted a working love potion, though many have tried. Attempts at this tend to destroy the victim, leaving them shells of their former selves, and sometimes killing them, though I believe the former to be worse. Still, various fakes and scams exist on the market, though this is true for many other potions. It’s actually very easy for a kalon to trick others into buying some mundane solution by claiming it has great powers. Besides, potions of that power tend to require a deep personal sacrifice, and are likely to backfire terribly if something goes wrong.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

Notes:
-Fantasy Au [would also have a modern AU as a side AU, because all my kalons are also in the modern AU even if it’s not their main one]
-Mage
-Either a kit [old enough to take care of herself] or young adult; I’m not sure yet
-Apothecary, makes medicines and healing potions, sometimes others
-Lives in some secluded area of the city where few kalons come, probably has a small house accessed in a side alley or behind some other buildings
-Makes frequent trips to the forest, always feels at peace there
-Collects useful ingredients while there
-Also collects other plants and fungi, antlers, feathers, bones, and dead things
-Her favorite animals are frogs [including toads, which count as frogs].
-Her favorite flower/plant of lavender.
-Loves ferns, mushrooms and forest wildlife.
-Also loves candles
-She has a crow/raven companion.
-She also has many frog/toad companion/they live in her house
-She experiments with potions on herself to find new ones or to test modified existing potions, which has put her in danger before
-Always has the worst of fortune

Kalon Name: Bona (first name of the Roman goddess of virginity, fertility, and healing)
Gender: Female
Prompt Response:
Bona's favorite potion to make is a healing potion. It is a very special and specific healing potion. This potion requires a special herb that only grows for a short few months in the depths of a dark forest, deep inside the cave behind a dangerously high waterfall. This special herb is called Vitaca. It helps females who are unable to bear kits, the ability to become pregnant. It only works once, so the loss of a developing kit can become truly devastating to the parents. Yet, kalons continue to come to Bona to be given even the slightest chance of having kits. The Vitacana Potion allows kalons who never thought they could be parents a small chance at parenthood. Bona has helped many royals in order to assist in keeping the royal bloodlines going, and though it is her job to help, the warmth that spreads through her when a kal brings her kit around to meet her, the kal that helped them to be born, is the greatest payment she could ever ask for.

A twig or two
With a cup of dew
Stirred with love
And put in with the feather's of a dove
Pulled out of the pot
And whisked of the rot
While still molten hot
Make sure to blot
And with adieu
You now have a potion
As good as new

Luna's favorite potion is a love potion! In order to make a love potion, one must put their own feelings of love into the pot. The twig and feathers represent a Cupid's arrow. The love essentially "coats" itself onto the twigs and feathers.

Luna love this potion because of the lore behind it. Cupid was said to be the original creator of this potion. He coated his arrows with the potion, making his targets fall in love when coming into contact with one of his arrows.
