fallslet me downwinter song

This wasn't the first time she'd lied to someone to benefit them, but this was definitely the one that hurt the most.

Wrapped up in as many layers as she could manage, Kalli stood at a train station in downtown Moscow, nearly freezing her tail off even despite her multiple hoodies, coats, and scarves. The young Kalon was a Graecian native, having moved to Moscow three short years ago to go to college; despite being used to the heat of the sun and the Greek beaches, she'd always dreamed of moving to the Russian capital and going to college, being in the culture, the food, the ballet. These past three years had been nothing short of a dream. Only problem with a dream is that you have to wake up sometime.

Since she was little, Kalli had always had a heart problem. It was weaker than a normal persons', but she'd learn to control it through a proper diet and very specific exercises; sometimes it felt like her life was a set schedule, unerring and never ending... Until she met Ivan.

One night, just shortly after her first semester, she'd saved up enough money to purchase front row seats to one of her favorite ballets, the Nutcracker. She spent hours before the show getting ready, putting on her favorite blue formal gown, doing her makeup, and styling her hair; she went to the ballet looking like a model. Once there, she found herself sitting next to another Kalon; he was dark-furred and tall, with happy violet eyes and a soft, confident smile. His ivory hair hung ever so slightly in his eyes, and she felt her heart flutter when his attention turned to her and didn't leave. She nervously greeted him, shyly tucking back a strand of hair, but he struck up a conversation so naturally that soon she was enthralled by him. He was kind, well-spoken despite his slightly broken english, and eager to share his company. He was dressed in a pressed black suit, and a soft pink scarf hung casually around his neck; Kalli chuckled slightly that they look like they'd come together. Too quickly the lights dimmed and ballet music began to fill the theatre, and as the first introductions were sung she realized she'd made an error; they were in Russian. She should have expected that, but in her excitement she hadn't even thought about it. Ivan seemed to clue into her disappointment, though, and without a second thought began softly translating the entire show. By the end of the night she'd leaned in close, and he'd casually laid his arm across her shoulders.

It seemed only natural that the next morning they met for coffee before she had class, and in no time they'd officially started dating. They two fell quickly for each other; she learned that in all actuality he was not that confident, that he was normally lonely and withdrawn from the world, even though he actively tried to make friends, most people were scared of him due to his size and accent. He said "da" after most sentences, which Kalli thought was absolutely adorable, even when he was trying to speak in English. They went out constantly; movies, dinners, sightseeing. It was obvious Ivan had money because he always paid for everything, even when she offered to take him out. He made her feel like the most amazing woman in the world, always doting on her and complimenting her; Kalli never felt more at home than when she spent nights at his place, so a year into their relationship, they took the leap to move in together. Things couldn't be more perfect for our little Graecian, but it didn't take long for all of her hopes to shatter.

It was towards the middle of the 3rd year when Kalli started showing strange symptoms and began to feel very ill. It was "spring break" for her college, and she'd spent the time She had no energy, no appetite, and strange fluttering feelings in her chest. She didn't want to go to the doctor, but with her history of heart problems, she really had no choice; she didn't tell Ivan, though, because she didn't want him to worry or try to leave work. So she went on her own, and ended up having to schedule multiple tests and appointments for different doctors. All of this just to try and help her figure out where all of these symptoms were coming from, not even to treat it. She tried her best to hide it from Ivan, but in the end he saw an envelope addressed to her from the hospital; immediately he thought she was pregnant and was prepared to get excited, but she told him that she just wasn't feeling well, and went to get some medicine. Her heart broke at the disappointment in his eyes; she didn't realize he'd wanted kids, but that was one thing she'd never be able to give him. Her doctor back home had said her heart wasn't strong enough to carry a single child, much less if she got pregnant with multiple kits. It was sad, but with her freebird lifestyle she'd quickly learned to get over it. Now Kalli was terrified, though, that he'd be completely heartbroken if she did ever tell him. This weighed heavily on her mind, and began to affect their relationship on her end.

She snuck around as best as she could, giving vague answers or even outright lying whenever she went to her doctors' appointments, and opted to pick up paperwork instead of having it mailed. She slowly pulled away from him bit by bit, and he noticed, but was too scared to say anything. He tried to dote more, spend more, do anything he could to woo her again, but he could feel that division slowly getting larger and larger until one day she came to him and told him she didn't feel the same. She needed space, had to go back home, and to not wait for her because she wouldn't be coming back. What she didn't tell him? She had a heart condition that the cold was making increasingly worse, to the point where one day her heart might completely fail and she'd just die of a heart attack. She'd apparently already had a very minor one, and it scared her enough into opting to finish her college back home. She didn't have much, luckily, only a few boxes of trinkets and clothes that she'd collected, mostly things that Ivan gave her and she treasured without a doubt. She'd packed them up, shipped them home, and gave Ivan one last kiss on the cheek before heading to the station, alone.

She'll never forget the heartbreak in his violet eyes when she walked out that door.

Now here she stood in the cold, fighting tears and wanting nothing more than to run back to him and cuddle in front of the fireplace. But she knew in her heart that this was for the best; he'd find a girl who could give him the things he more than deserved, and she'd find a way to be happy, somehow. Because everything works out in the end... right?

Once she returned home and got settled down in an apartment near to her parents, Kalli started up a Youtube channel for makeup and fashion, to make some extra money on the side. She opened up a P.O. box for fan mail as she gained popularity, and one day a strange, unmarked package came in. No name, no return address, nothing except her name and the P.O. box address. When she opened it, she found the most beautiful snowglobe wrapped carefully in violet tissue paper, and a note that read "I seem to remember you always admired this, da?"

Hey! I have an update on this competition. ; )

There will be four winners now! There will be three prizes given out to those who's form I enjoyed! Or, if not enough people completed their forms, I'll be picking random users who marked the thread and PMing them about their prize C:

The three prizes will be 100x100 pixel icons of one of the users Kalons, or if they are a nonowner, of another character of theirs! (or a fictional character from any series if they do not own other ocs)

Thank you all, and I can't wait to read the finished forms! Have a wonderful day!

    name: nayden (nay for short)

    gender: male

prompt response: nayden, ever the little nosy sixteen year old, was doing the thing he did best; eavesdropping. and currently he was listening to a conversation between three males and one female, and what they were saying peaked his interest quite a bit.

"at this point, i don't care if they only have the knowledge of how to screw a bolt into place, or if they're five years old or one million. we need to get off this planet NOW," the words coming from the female were stern, and nayden turned just in time to see the angered look on her face, and the three males giving defeated looks to each other.

the black haired woman was muttering under her breath as she took a seat - coincidentally next to nayden - and ordered herself three shots of something he had never heard of before.

"rough day?" he asked, trying to start a conversation.

synnove's eyes went to him, her eyebrows furrowing as she looked him up and down. "aren't you a little young to be in here?" she asked, one of her brows then raising.

nayden simply laughed, "not many people care here," he responded, taking a drink of whatever was in his cup. setting the glass down, he processed what he was gonna say to her before taking in a breath, turning his body towards her. "so, i overheard you over there talking about needing an engineer?" he asked, tilting his head to the side.

she stopped her motions with bringing her glass to her mouth, slowly setting it down before giving him her full attention.

"that i do," she began, pausing for a few seconds before continuing. "you know someone?"

"yeah, actually, i do. that someone being me," he gave a small smile, knowing that he was lying through his damn teeth. he didn't know the first thing about engineering, let alone fixing a whole ass spacecraft. he just wanted to get off this hell hole of a planet just as bad as this woman and her friends.

"kid, how old are you?" she asked, finally swallowing one of her shots in one go, her face scrunching up.

"sixteen, but why does that matter? didn't you say, and i quote, "i don't care if they're five years old or one million"?"

synnove stared at him before very slowly nodding, obviously rolling the idea over in her head.

"don't you have parents or something? we're gonna need someone who can actually go with us, considering we don't want to end up stranded on another planet."

nayden laughed softly, "i never met my parents. so no, i don't have any parents tying me down, i'm all free and ready to go."

"hmm," synnove looked down at one of the two of her remaining drinks, downing one, then the other before standing. "alright, kiddo, welcome aboard. name's synnove, and those three idiots over there are my useless crew members who don't know the difference between yellow and blue." she laughed softly at her own joke, and nayden exhaled softly out of his nose. synnove proceeded to pay the bartender before turning to the small lad.

"name's nayden, happy to be of your service," he said, putting out his hand. synnove glanced down at his hand before offering a warm smile, shaking it. "hoping i can not only tell you the difference between blue and yellow, but also fix your ship."

synnove laughed at that, clapping her hands together. "i can tell already that we're gonna get along, nayden."

the two then made their way to where the other three were waiting, arguing softly with each other.

when synnove cleared her throat, they gave nayden a weird look, discussing how in the world a kid was gonna fix their ship.

"aye, you can pick up on some pretty good things here, despite this place looking like a garbage can."

one of the three nodded, "fair enough."

the five of them walked for a few minutes - them all asking questions about nayden; where he lived, if he was gonna be comfortable going with complete strangers, asking if he was gonna miss anybody - before they got to the ship.

nayden had to crane his neck up to look at the absolute unit, mouth falling open a bit.

"that is... wow. look at the size of this lad," he murmured under his breath, nervousness beginning to settle in his stomach. he had told himself on the walk there that he was gonna be okay, how hard would fixing a couple of wires and stuff be, you know? but now that he was staring at this ship... he knew that there was no way in hell he was gonna be able to figure out what he was doing.

he jumped as he felt synnove's hand pat his back, pushing him a bit to come along with the four of them.

when he was brought to the engineering room, he couldn't believe his eyes. the whole damn wall - which mind you, was quite wide - was filled with different little lights, wires hanging out and tangled, nuts and bolts laying on the floor as well as tools. they all stood their in silence before he turned to synnove, obvious worry in his eyes.

she laughed, "don't stress too much. i know i said i want to be off this planet immediately, but i know this is a lot of work, so take your time, okay?" she put a comforting hand on his shoulder before turning, the other three already making their way out. looking over her shoulder, she spoke. "if you need anything, i'm just two rooms over."

nayden nodded, watching as they all left before slowly turning to the wall. he felt almost nauseous looking at it. so... he had just lied to get onto the ship... but how was he expecting to leave with them if he didn't know exactly what he was looking at? honestly, he didn't think he'd get this far. he thought he knew a little bit of things about fixing stuff, but... he realized he wasn't being completely honest with himself and was probably just hoping he knew more than he did. which in turn made him realize he had just lied to complete strangers who probably knew how to kill people blindfolded with a hand tied behind their back. uh oh.

an hour and a half later, synnove had entered the room, watching as nayden worked away, just going with what he thought was right.

    "bout done?"

nayden dropped the tools he was holding, falling onto his behind as he shouted in fear.

synnove snorted, "you alright there?" she began laughing then as she walked over to him, helping him up.

"yeah, this is the last thing i need to get done."

synnove's eyes traveled the wall before they fell back onto him, a smile slowly forming on her face. "good! once you're done, i'll show you to your room."

nayden nodded, swallowing harshly before fidgeting with the tools he had, going to work once more before stepping away, eyes studying everything. it... looked right? from what little knowledge he had on engineering.

when he turned, synnove placed a finger to her ear, speaking to presumably one of her crew members. "we're ready for takeoff."

nayden felt his heart flip in his chest, but before he could think on it too long, synnove was motioning for him to follow her, talking about something he instantly tuned out, his brain only thinking of one phrase; please be okay, please be okay, please be okay.

    [1259/2500 words]

extra one: so, as expected, the crew... was less than happy with nayden after they found out his little stunt. everything went fine for a few hours - to nayden's surprise - until the ship stalled in the middle of nowhere. from that situation, the three crew members that weren't synnove, had a hard time trusting nayden and even went as far to say that they hated the kid, and claimed that the moment they turned their back, he would betray them. synnove, of course, defended him, feeling sorry for him and saying that she understood why he did it. but, that was months ago, and nayden is still there with them, despite the other three's anger towards him. this is the second time he's gone out on a mission with them, slowly trying to prove himself to all of them. yes, even synnove, since he wanted to regain her trust.

nayden took a step into the darkened room after the four others, seeing his breath in front of him from the cold. they had gone through winding tunnels to get to where they were after getting a lead on an abandoned place full of tech they might want; the only catch being that the planet was so cold that you would be able to freeze to death within minutes if you stood out in the snow for too long. he held his knife close to him as he felt goosebumps rising on the back of his neck, which could be easily explained by the freezing weather, but... he had a feeling something else caused it. synnove's soft voice broke him out of his thoughts then.

"nayden? you keeping up? it gets darker, and i don't want to leave you behind," she called out, nayden looking to where they were about ten feet in front of him.

"yeah, coming," he replied, speed walking until he was next to her. synnove then turned the flashlight on that was attached to the chest of her suit, nayden's eyes instantly scanning the now lightened area.

"we've been here for twenty minutes already, i don't think there's anything here," one of the three men said, sighing in obvious annoyance. "we've probably been sent on a wild goose chase, and the cost? money you decided to shell that guy."

"shut up and just concentrate on the task at hand, will you?" synnove's voice was firm, and the guy said nothing more, and neither did the other two. "sheesh," she muttered under her breath, glancing down at nayden who was clearly amused.

the crew continued their journey until they reached a giant room, with what seemed to be... earth technology from the 90's.

"the hell is this?" synnove asked, anger laced in her tone.

nayden took a look around; he didn't see anything wrong with it since he had never seen it before, not being from earth and everything.

"is there something wrong with it?" he asked, genuinely curious.

one of the three stooges snorted, and synnove gave him the side eye before looking to nayden.

    "it's-"

suddenly, before she could explain any further, deafening sirens began blaring throughout the compound.

nayden dropped the knife he was holding in his hand in favor for covering his ears, squinting his eyes as he looked around at the others.

"we've been set up! go, run!" synnove screamed over the alarms, nayden hurriedly grabbing his blade from the floor before sprinting after the four of them.

from behind him, he heard shouts in an unknown language, and he instantly felt his blood run cold; well, colder than it already was, anyway. he heard a shot being fired, and felt a burning sensation graze his forearm. he saw the three turning ahead, but he was already panicking and his bones felt so cold and hard to move, and he could feel his legs slowing down and suddenly he heard another shot go off.

looking a foot in front of him, synnove had turned around, firing her gun at whoever it was chasing them, and her free hand pushed against nayden's back, forcibly pushing him around the next corner. nayden wasn't going to leave her alone though, instead standing there panting as he waited for her to come along. but... that wasn't what he got. instead, he watched as a bullet ripped through her left shoulder, throwing her off her feet, and her gun slid towards him.

adrenaline was rushing through him at this point, and he looked down the hall to see the three running back, but they were too far away to do anything. nayden had to act fast. he had never used a gun before in his life, but he wasn't going to let them kill synnove.

rushing towards the firearm, he dropped his knife in favor of it, turning the corner and beginning to fire. the recoil wasn't too bad on it, but it still managed to move his tiny frame back by a few centimeters with each fire.

synnove managed to pick herself up off the floor, holding her wounded shoulder.

"nayden! go!" she shouted, and he did, unfortunately leaving his knife behind; but he was more worried about his mother figure then a stupid piece of metal.

although synnove said to go, nayden still stayed behind her to make sure she got out okay, firing at each person he saw behind them to prevent them from catching up to them as they made their way out.

thirty minutes after taking off and leaving that god forsaken place, one of the three approached nayden, who was sitting beside synnove, who was laying down and looking sleepy from pain meds.

"hey, i just want to say... i'm thankful for what you did back there. not sure what any of us would do without synnove," he cleared his throat then, "you're not so bad, kid. glad to have you."

with that, he turned and left the med bay, leaving nayden with watering eyes and a smile on his face.

    [1,000/1,000 words]

    extra two: "nay? nayden?"

nayden slowly opened his eyes, groaning in pain as he felt something crushing his left arm. synnove was calling him from their calling system built into the arm of his suit, but her voice was almost pure static, and he was surprised her voice even woke him up.

his head was pounding, and he squinted his eyes as he looked to his left. a large rock had his arm pinned down, and realizing this made pain surge up and down his nerves. he let out a soft cry, feeling the sting of tears building in the corners of his eyes. he tried to ignore it all, knowing he had to contact synnove. lifting his right arm close to his face, he spoke.

"synnove?" his voice unintentionally came out almost in a whisper, and he wondered if synnove even heard him.

    "nayden, oh... god, .... okay?"

she cut out a couple times, but he could grasp what she was trying to ask.

"my arm... it's pinned. everything hurts," he felt a tear escape his eye, rolling down his face as he let out a soft whine.

"... are you? any... else hurt?"

between the static and the cutting out, nayden was beginning to understand less and less of what synnove was saying, or trying to say for that matter.

"i think my arm might be broken, i don't know if i can get this boulder off of me."

he looked down at his right arm as it beeped twice, and the light signaling a call was going on had disappeared, and he started to feel himself panic.

"call synnove," he paused. nothing happened. his voice began to grow shaky, and he felt more tears coming down his face. "call synnove! call her, call her!" he shouted, the tears falling rapidly down his face.

he began full on sobbing then, his right hand weakly trying to push the rock off of his arm, but he barely had any strength. the headache from before almost felt as if it was burning his brain at this point, due to him crying. the pain was becoming unbearable, and he knew he had to try to calm himself down.

swallowing hard, he leaned his head back on the rigid, almost sharp wall of rock behind him. closing his eyes, he began taking in deep breaths, just trying to focus on that and not the seething pain in almost every aspect of his body.

after doing this for a few minutes, he calmed himself down considerably, and he opened his eyes once more. his free hand went to turn on his flashlight, and he groaned in annoyance when he found that it didn't work. gods, where was he? he remembered the floor caving in underneath him and hitting his head against something, and then when he came to, he was here. how far did he fall? how long had he been out?

"call synnove," he said, voice firm. he knew it probably wouldn't work, but he was surely going to try anyway. to no surprise, it wasn't working, and he had to accept the fact that he was truly and utterly alone.

calmly, he tried pushing the rock off of himself again, pushing with all his might, and to no avail.

almost too quickly, nayden accepted then that he was going to die. there was no way they were gonna find him, and he obviously couldn't help himself. closing his eyes again, he felt a tightness in his chest and his body beginning to shiver in fear. he had accepted he was gonna die, but that didn't mean that he didn't fear dying.

he sat there for a few more minutes, trying to reassure himself that dying wasn't so bad, and that it was going to be alright.

then, the rational part of his brain kicked in.

but don't you have so much to live for? synnove said you guys were so close to finding a new home, that it wouldn't be more than a week before you found it. no more traveling, finally a good place to call home, and... you can finally have a mother. synnove. she said she was going to put you into schooling, and pay for engineering classes for you so you could actually learn how to do it instead of blindly doing things. she even said you could probably find a nice boy there and settle down, and finally be happy and safe. don't you want that?

opening his eyes, he took in a deep breath, pressing his right hand against the cold stone that was pinning him down, and pushing with all his might. it budged, and with a few more long moments of pushing, it had rolled off. he felt so relieved he could cry, but he knew that would be bad for his already agonizing headache. standing on wobbly legs, he began limping around, using his right hand to feel around the rough walls and find himself a way out.

after walking for awhile, he saw a light. he limped towards it as quickly as he could, and his eyes were blinded by the harsh light of the outside world. he continued to limp around for about twenty minutes, he spotted his crew, and one of them spotted him, pointing and shouting.

synnove, who obviously looked distressed, tears rolling down her face, turned and spotted him. her face filled with relief, and she was running to nayden, taking him into her arms. he went fully limp against her, exhausted. he swore he could fall asleep right then and there.

"my baby, oh my god, i'm so happy you're alive, i'm so sorry i didn't help you," she sobbed against him.

his one working hand tightened his grip against the fabric of her suit, and he let out a strained sob. even if they weren't blood related, synnove was his mother, and he was damn glad to have her.

Hello everyone! I'm here with the results for this competition. I read all of your amazing forms and it was difficult to choose just one absolute winner omg. I judged based solely off of the prompt response- prettying up and extras did not count towards the overall judgement (unless you used your extras to add more to the story)

Now, without further ado, the winner of this kalon kit is.....

Lillybear!

I really enjoyed the wholesome, lightheartedness of your prompt response. It reminded me of when I was forced to play baseball and soccer at the YMCA when I was younger fdhjkj
I trust you'll take good care of Charlie, and I can't wait to see him around the community and eventually all grown up! <3

Now for the winners of the pixel icons! C:

The winners are...
SilentMelody, SpartanAmethyst, and petrify!

SilentMelody, I really liked the silly, cute relationship between Hinto and Nalani. Very wholesome. 10/10 would read again. In all seriousness though, it was absolutely adorable and you were the tiebreaker!

SpartanAmethyst, I thought your form was bittersweet, yet fitting. I think the relationship between Kalliste and Ivan had potential but it really be like that huh 👊😔 I really enjoyed the story, though! I'd love to see it applied to an actual character :0

petrify, your form had really good character development and I like the usage of the extras to further expand on Nayden's character and his relationship with Synnove! The space adventure was fun and it gave me some Star Trek vibes. Love it!

Winners of the pixel icons, please PM me with what character you'd like me to turn into an icon and I'll get started as soon as possible!

Thank you all for trying out for this kit, I enjoyed reading all of your forms and the creative characters and prompt responses! Continue being amazing, imaginative people, and as always, have a wonderful day/night! <3

    !!!

Thank you so much, cherrydoge! I'm absolutely delighted and honored to have won this kit. I knew from the moment I saw your fanclub post about them that I'd have to try out─I had an instant connection. They're just the cutest, and they made me think of blueberry muffins (which in part inspired my story)! I cannot wait to continue to develop Charlie, my happy little baker. You'll definitely be seeing him around!

And a congratulations to the pixel-icon winners! All of you had awesome and creative stories, and I wish you best of luck in future competitions.

It was really sweet of you to give feedback on all of our forms as well! I really appreciate it. And thank you again for adding me! I hope you have a wonderful day/night too!
