CREE: So, may you tell me your name again? It’s for the transcript.

SKULD: It is Skuld.

CREE: Yes, like the valkyrie?

SKULD: She was actually a Norn, one of the creators of fate who decided when everyone dies. But, she is somewhat associated with Valkyries, so you aren’t that wrong.

CREE: And, as I understand it, you gave yourself the name. Is that correct?

SKULD: Yes. I don’t want to talk about my original name.

LAPIN: I believe you were under a male-

SKULD: (emphasized) I said I don’t want to talk about it.

LAPIN: It’s important for the whole story to come into place. We need you to be honest about your past, even if it hurts.

CREE: Lapin, we’ll ask someone else who knows her.

LAPIN: Well, yes. I’m just saying this won’t go over well anywhere else she tries to hide it from.

CREE: Understandable. Skuld, you were born with wings, correct?

SKULD: I don’t believe I was born, so much as created. I don’t remember being born at all.

CREE: It’s normal to not remember being born. Because memories form best when you have the words to describe them, and nobody hatches speaking a language. Otherwise we’d all speak the same one!

SKULD: Really...

LAPIN: How sheltered have you been your whole life?

SKULD: Not many people talk about being born. I just assumed.

CREE: What about your parents? Didn’t they tell you?

SKULD: I don’t have any.

(Pause)

CREE: Oh.
Where were you raised?

SKULD: Orphanages. None of them held me for long.

CREE: Do you know why?

SKULD: I was a very rebellious kid, by their standards. But I was only defending others. I’ve learned very painful ways of biting.

CREE: Exactly what do you mean by defending others?

SKULD: Adopted kids aren’t very well-treated. It just makes life harder for them. You know how bullies can get. And, as it turns out, they only understand the language of violence. A very sad state to be in.

CREE: Yes. And that’s why you’re here, because of an incident that put the agressor into the hospital. Would you like to explain the situation?

SKULD: It was my friend Cody being hurt. He’s always so kind to everyone. He loves to pretend to be a mouse and sneak around. He makes squeaking noises that are very cute. But the bully didn’t like that, and it pounced on him while yelling “Mousetrap!” thinking it was funny. It was not funny. I tried to pull him off by the back of his neck. Apparently not all creatures have a neck scruff like viscets do.

CREE: I don’t have one, myself.

SKULD: He was bleeding badly. I hated the blood. But I had to save Cody.

CREE: Can you describe the relationship between you and Cody?

SKULD: He was the first one to greet me when I came here. He wasn’t scared of me, and he always was very nice.

CREE: What is your name? It’s a required question.

CODY: Cody Birchback. Until I get adopted or something.

CREE: And you know the defendant Skuld?

CODY: She’s pretty cool. She made herself a sword out of craft supplies once, but it got taken away.

CREE: She calls you a friend, did you know that?

CODY: We are pretty close! I like hanging out with her.

CREE: So, you were there during the incident that ended up with her arriving here. What do you recall?

CODY: You mean like the time this big dude pounced on me? And she pulled him away and saved me?

CREE: So, you were in danger.

CODY: Felt darn like it. You ever heard of a “full Nelson”?

LAPIN: It’s a wrestling move that hurts. I’ve had experience.

CREE: Yes. Lapin, is it dangerous?

LAPIN: It can bend your neck seriously out of position.

(CREE cringes)

CODY: Yep, that was the deal. Favored by tough guys everywhere. I didn’t see what Skuld did, but there was blood afterwards. And ooh, was it scary.

CREE: I felt it would help if we brought you two together. I understand you are close?

SKULD: Why do you keep asking this question? We are not dating.

CREE: I clarify, in a friendly way.

CODY: Yes, we are. Very much!

SKULD: Then, I assume yes. He’s kind to me. Not many people are.

CODY: Then they’re seriously missing out. You’re really cool!

CREE: How is moving affecting you, Skuld?

SKULD: I don’t like it. A whole new set of people have to get used to me.

LAPIN: We can’t let her stay there, do you know how much targeting you get for being the kid that sent another kid to the hospital?

SKULD: I assume I can ride on my reputation.

CODY: But then, everyone will be scared of you. You won’t have any other friends.

SKULD: I don’t need any other friends.

LAPIN: That’s an unhealthy mindset.

SKULD: What are you, a therapist?

CODY: He’s right. I’m a friend, yeah, but you can’t just subside on me. I could get adopted, and leave you with nobody else.

SKULD: Then what do I do? Leave you?

CODY: Cree, is there a way I could be transferred along with her?

CREE: I don’t know. I’m sorry.

CODY: Put it in with the big guys then!

CREE: Alright, Lapin, get this down on the record.

LAPIN: Ready.

CREE: My official recommendation is to keep Skuld and Cody together in Skuld’s next move. I suggest treating them as legal siblings, to make sure they aren’t split up. I will send this to the court.
