Summary: Billy and Cammi catch newts.
'Ughh! It's been hours since we got anything! Can't we move somewhere else?
'Patience Cam, real men don't quit'
'*sigh You're ten Billy'
'hush'
~
'Cam! Look! I got a big one!' The young kit raised a butterfly net from the water, to reveal a rather large, slimy newt.
'Oh yeah it's huge! Biggest one I've seen' Cammie replied with a cheerful tone, she was rather amazed and disgusted at the same time on what lived in the local pond.
'We better release it soon, it looks pretty frightened' Billy raised his head to inspect the newt, 'heck'
'You tend to have that effect on anyone that stares at you' she turned her head trying not to laugh.
'Shut up, at least I don't have a face like yours' Billy had a flustered shift in his otherwise merry voice.
'Aww you noticed...' Said Cammie making the situation more awkward.
The newt started to squirm and slither as it desperately tried to escape a ten year old's hand-me-down'd butterfly net. Billy saw this and slowly lowered the net back into the pond. Cammie was greeted with a splash as in splat into the water, escaping the net. Billy watched the newt sink into the abyss-like depth of the pond whilst Cammie cleaned the gross pond water out of her face.
~
'C'mon! You can hardly notice it's there'
'Well duh! You can't see it but you can definitely smell it.'
'That's the most truthful thing you've said all day'
'Shut up and help me get it off'
Billy picked up his trusty handkerchief and helped her wipe her fuzzy face.
'All gone'
'How do I look?'
'Like nothing happened' Billy said with a smile
~
'Should we catch one more or head home Cam?' Billy looked at the sun slowly disappearing across the plains. 'Scratch that, were going home'
Feint bells could be heard across the grass, it was the sound of return. Cammie's ears pricked like a needle, 'it's getting late Billy, I'm hungry'
Being the 'mature' older brother he was, Billy pack up his possessions and nudged Cammie into the grass. Cammie began to spot some mud, which they left behind as a trail, so they didn't get lost. The mud wasn't really mud? More of broken twigs and rocks and leaves they had both found during their little 'adventure'. (They even had had left over sticks and rocks after making the trail, but they dumped them into the pond, no wonder why the newt was so mad.) Along the path, Billy chased through the long grass, scaring off bugs, and anything that dared to come in his path. Cammie, closely followed him as they trailed through the grass, almost eating every fly he scared away.
'C'mon Cam we're almost there'
'You sure?' A tired Cammie was nearly out of breath, poor thing.
'Cam... if you want we can take a little rest'
'Right'
They rested down in a cooler patch of grass, near a small patch of dirt, with a few weeds growing out of it, looking at the field ahead.
~
The sun wasn't as distant as before but it was almost gone, as it gave off a yellow-orange tint as it went into hiding.
They kept following the patches of lilac flowers to a more shady and cool areas, of familiar oak trees and loose tyres attached, worn as generations came by.
'Cam, were home'
'Awww already?'
'You were just complaining about walking a few minutes ago!'
(small pause)
'We were out for five hours, trying to catch newts they'll be concerned'
'alright'
-
'Hey Billy,'
'Hmm?'
'We should... Do this again sometime...you know? Just you and me...'
'Sure! Next time we can catch butterflies or-or we could chase birds or-
'What about tomorrow afternoon? But on one condition...'
'?'
'No newts'
'Deal'
