Have you ever really looked at buttons? I don't mean the kinds you pin on your backpack, not the 5-for-5 Hot Topic off-air cartoon and emo band buttons. No, I mean the simpler kind. The buttons that shirt companies send along another of, the just-in-case kind of buttons. The kind of buttons with function, with purpose. The kinds with two holes, four holes, even those old-lady ornamental buttons with just one loop on the back - the kind that hang down if they aren't stuck through the heavy fabric of the other side of the shirt, jacket, or dress, even.
Every button has a story, you know. It's silly, sometimes, but you want to know how many I find that look alike? Trust me, it's not many. Every button came from somewhere it was once important, maybe just as a spare. Maybe it was a first date that went down the drain, maybe it was an average summer afternoon snag that sent it to the pavement to find another home. Look, anyway, you can't ever know the story of a button. It might have been anyone's, from anywhere. Anybody can take it, and anybody can give it a new purpose. But I like to hoard 'em up, you know. I've got quite the stash. I think the point is, when you get enough buttons, you've got enough stories going to fill a library. And when you're feeling down, just run your hands through 'em. Through the stories of a hundred, two hundred, three hundred lives. 'Cause every button belonged to somebody, but every somebody has a story and a thousand connections too.
So that's what I collect. Buttons, mostly. But I kinda collect stories, too.
