Saria ~ Female ~ Sage of Earth ~ 17

Username: DogLife.
Name: Saria (the Kokiri Girl from The Legends of Zelda: Ocarnia of Time)
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Birthday: 11th of July
Occupation: Sage of Earth
Place of Origin: Willow Grove, West Myixa
Friends: Skylla, Gypsy
Prize Possessions: Earth Staff, Lyre and Forest Medallion
Theme Song: WIP

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The land of Myixa was in danger. Long ago a vast demonic presence took over the land, killing the angles that once roamed. Fertility was burnt to the ground, volcanoes spewed lava to poison the rivers right down to the sea. Ash fell instead of rain. The land would have been destroyed if not for the Angel Luna who attacked the leader of the Demons Gannon. She sacrificed her freedom to seal the Demon into the mountain, thus pulling all the Demons towards the Earths power and core. With all the Demons gone under the Earth and all the Angels slaughtered, a new creation rose: mortals. These mortals would not be enough to save Myixa, so before Luna gave up the last of her powers and perished, she wrote a prophecy. Luna closed her great eyes once more, and returned her magic to the land. A thousand years passed, Myixa was still awaiting her hero. And that is where our story begins.

I was born into the arms of the forest, never knowing who my parents were. The place I grew up was a grove of willow trees, filled with emerald leaves and the voices of spirits. I learnt from a young age that every living thing had a voice, the trees, the babbling brook that sung its melodies to help me sleep and all the animals that chartered in the forest. I lived in the heart of the forest, the beating center that the rest of the world revolved around. This was where my journey began.

As I was young I was banned from ever leaving the sanctuary of the trees. Each time I tried to leave, the trees barred my way, the brook sung stories of rage. I belonged to the forest, as I discovered from that young age. My day were full of climbing, running after the little animals that inhabited the woods. But I always felt the pull that dragged me towards the edge. This was how the first seventeen years of my life were spent, struggling to escape, robbed of the allowance to explore. I wanted to run in the meadows of green grass, see the open sky instead of one dotted with leaves.

As a child growing up in a grove of willow trees, my only escape was to care for the animals that chased their tails and spread their feathers to soar. My best friend of all was a small, gorgeous fox cub called Flick. He was a small, orphaned cub, with a lame back leg. Though he held his leg under his stomach when he ran, Flick was a little lightning bolt on three legs, a flash of rusty red fur with glints of white. He and I went everywhere together, to chase the birds, to dance in the brook. His laugh was an adorable "yip yip" sound, his tongue lolling out as his cries rang through the air. His joy made the whole grove brighter, though I was still contained. Still hopeful that it would change.

Then one day after seventeen years of silence, something did change.

"Saria.... Saria..."
The call of the Willow Mother called to me in my sleep. Deep within the grove of trees I grew up in there was one tree that almost looked like it had a face, which we preferred to as the Willow Mother. She taught me everything I knew, she taught me the voices of the trees, the songs of the brook and the language of the animals. When the Willow Mother called, you came. She protected the whole forest with her powers.
"Good morning, Mother," I said, bowing my head respectfully as I sat before the tree who raised me. Flick dipped his head politely, before swishing his bushy tail happily.
"Saria... Thank you for coming so quickly... You are now fourteen summers old, am I correct?"
"Yes, Willow Mother. Fourteen summers as of three moons ago."
"Then the time has come to... tell you... the tale of Myixa..."

"One thousand years ago today, a great demon legion called the Darklings came to Myixa, which was previously inhabited by Angels. The Angels... they were overcome in a matter of hours, unable to escape such a legion of about a million strong to their one thousand. Many were slaughtered but a few escaped back to the Angels universe. Only one Angel, the Angel of the Moon, remained in attempt to destroy the Demons..."
"Luna," I gasped. "The Angel was called Luna."
"Correct, Saria... correct... Luna approached the leader of the Demons Gannon with only a staff made from a juniper tree and the crystal heart. She flew towards him with wings made of light, swirling her staff to combat his duo of swords. The magic she whispered was ancient. It ensnared the Demon Gannon and sealed him and his swords into the Mountain of the Goddesses Spirit, thus rendering him powerless."
I stared at her gnarled face, eyes wide. An ancient chant and a sword had saved Luna.
"However... to keep him in the stone and to move the rest of the Demons to the underground caverns, Luna would have to sacrifice her powers and perish herself. Before she took the final steps, she wrote the prophesy that would come to save Myixa. Look at the stone on the left..."
I stepped to the left, looking at the stone. It was about five foot tall, tangled in ivy and studded with emeralds. Inscribed in the ancient curled writing were the words of Luna's prophesy. The mortal touched by both Angels, Demons, Mortal in body and Hunter in heart will rise to cure Myixa. She will be aided by the four sages, the sages of Earth, Water, Fire and Air with the spirit of Light. Together she will vanquish the spirit of Shadow, restoring Myixa to fertility and safety.
"Why are you telling me this? With all due respect Mother..."
"I have something to give you dear. It is time for you to take your role."
"My role...?"
"Only time will tell you. But take the items by the stone. It is time for you to leave the grove."

Behind the sacred stone, I found a beautiful staff. It was made of willow branches and a clear set of cut emeralds, one orb in the center and five little ivy shaped gems on the gnarled wood. There was also a lyre, a beautiful five stringed harp in soft sand coloured wood, decorated with ivy emeralds. The final item was a necklace, a green disc with an engraved willow tree hanging on a silver chain. I emerged and stood before my Mother.
"I'll come back... I promise."
"When you have carried out your quest... The forest will call you... you were always destined to leave the grove... as Nature's Choice..."

Leaving the Willow grove for the first time set my fur on edge, I held my breath awaiting the call of the eagle or the tug of a tree branch. Flick walked by my side his head up and tail swishing. His button nose twitched eagerly, as I remembered it was his first taste of freedom too. We passed through the grove at a fast pase, never faltering. The only time I really stopped on the way was by the brook.
"Thank you old friend. Thank you for being here as I grew up." For if the brook hadn't sung its song everyday, music would not be in my heart. I hooked the lyre on my belt made of woven yellow and green grass held my staff. The necklace was around my neck, and I knew it would never come off. The staff was long and flickered with green fire under the full force of the Sun. Shielding my eyes, I looked at the golden orb for the first time without it being shaded by the trees. I thought back to the prophecy, wondering what my part to play would be. I had never met an Angel or a Demon, therefore I couldn't be the saviour of Myixa. I could only be the Sage of Earth, but the idea that a simple girl who grew up in a grove of willow trees could be a Sage made me feel ridiculous. First things first, Saria, I told myself. First I have to make sense of Willow Mother's gifts to me. The staff. The lyre. The medallion.

Time passed like the river racing downstream to the sea, as I followed the edge of the forest to a new place. It was clear of all trees and grass, covered on tiny, soft gold stones that moved in patterns towards the biggest river I had ever seen. The light glinted on the moving water and I could smell the tang of salt. So this is the sea, I thought. Flick was gazing out at the water, his fur sticking up in little spikes. Something felt wrong about the place, as if I had moved to an area that I didn't belong in. I was about to turn and leave, when a head surfaced from the sea. The other Viscet was green and speckled white with large eyes, a caring smile. They stepped out from the ocean and shook out their fur, splattering me with droplets.
"Hi! Sorry if I startled you! Are you okay?"
"I'm... I'm... yeah, I'm fine thanks... I'm Saria by the way..."
"Hey Saria, my names Skylla. Are you from around here? I've met everyone from this end of the bay at some point or another, and I don't think I've met you..."
"No, I'm from the west... The willow grove there... you know?"
She grinned, "Yep, I know the place! Who's this cutie?"
Flick relaxed as she patted his head softy. "This is Flick."
"Hi Flick!" She looked at me for a heartbeat, then her eyes lit up. "You hungry?"
"Just a little..." I admitted. Flick bounced up and down at the prospect of food. "And he definitely is!"
"Come on then! Let's go!"

I followed the strange Viscet up the slope to a small cave where she opened her bag, removing a hunk of meat. Flick begged. I recoiled a little. "What is that?"
"A type of bird called a groosling."
"Right... do you have any... non meat items?"
"Oh! Are you vegetarian? Sure, I have kale and seaweed and stuff. Sorry." She sliced the groosling in half, giving a chunk to Flick. He graciously took the meat and retreated outside, knowing I hated the sight.
" 'Sal right..." I scuffed the ground shyly. "How old are you Skylla?"
"Nineteen. You?"
"Seventeen. But I haven't been out much..."
"Do you have a pack?"
"No... I've always lived alone... I don't even know my parents."
"I'm sorry Saria. I used to be alone too. The village chased me out... because of my inner voice. It's called a multi personality disorder, or something. Anyway, I met a male called Jace, and then a Viscet called Ghost saved our lives from falling off a cliff. Their mated, Jace and Ghost that is. They have two kids now, Jasper and Spirit. I run with their pack now. Though sometimes I come here to be alone... I need it sometimes. Sorry, I'm talking too much aren't I?"
"It's okay Skylla. They sound wonderful."
I couldn't help staying there as the sky turned dark, listening to Sky talk. She was so happy, but I noticed the dark shadow cross her eyes. It was so interesting listening to her life, so different from my own. We didn't really talk about me, until she asked about my staff.
"I was given it by a friend, they gave me this," I said, gesturing to my medallion, "and also my lyre."
"Can I see your staff?" I handed my staff to Skylla. "Hey Saria?"
"Yeah?"
"This isn't any ordinary staff. It's enchanted. It's a magic staff. And these ivy leaves? It's got nature's magic in it."

For a moment I was stumped. I asked her how she knew. It turned out her friend Ghost was a Spirit Guide, she knew about these things. She once said there were four weapons made of pure power of the elements, Earth, Fire, Water and Air. It matched my idea, and the prophecy. And if I had the staff... My hunch had been correct. I was the Sage of Earth.

I stayed with Skylla for three days, until she returned to her pack. She offered to take me and Flick along, but I declined, though my heart longed to follow her, to belong. One day, I promised myself, I would find a family. Like Skylla. I will not be alone. I walked on the shore for a day, then looped back up to my beloved woods. I sat on a tree branch, sliding my staff into my belt, and removing the lyre. I played the five note run that I had created, watching my staff glow. Glow. It was glowing! I jumped out of the tree, removed the staff and sang my notes, soft and clear. It continued to glow. I sang louder, singing the notes over and over again, the staff glowed brighter. It brushed the trunk of a dead tree and it came to life. Leaves, apple blossoms. Apples. I burst into laughter. The staff stopped glowing but my laughter continued to ring out loud and clear, in tune with Flick and his beautiful "yip yips". I was the Sage of Earth. I finally knew who I was.

Saria. Girl of Willows. Sage of Earth

"Okay... Grow!" I commanded, pointing my staff at a sapling. There was a fizz of green sparks, then nothing. I sighed. This was probably the fiftieth attempt at making Earth magic work. "I guess I'm not cut out for this, huh Flick?" My fox friend looked up at me with his big brown eyes, sympathetic at my struggle. You could see the thoughts racing through his head, as he bowed down mischievously, wanting to play. I chased my ball of fluffy lightning across the meadow, keen to for my fail to be forgotten.
I collapsed on the floor, giggling as Flick licked my face. "Yuck! Flick!"
"Yip Yip!"
I lay down in the grass, stretching out. Since leaving Skylla two weeks ago, followed by the revelation that I really was the Sage of Earth, I has been unable to use any of my "powers". It had made me stress a little, but I was sure that I could learn to channel my powers. As time passed, I became less sure, until I gave up. That had led to the endless testing of my magic. Or lack thereof. I had even tried singing my song or playing it on my lyre as before, but that had no effect. I had been so sure that I had sussed out the staff and lyre, not the medallion though, but I guess I hadn't solved any of the mysteries. Flick looked at me, cocking his head to one side before covering my face in vigorous licks, making me giggle.

And then, with movement in the shadows, my laughter died in my throat.

Moving towards me in a pack of seven or more were creatures made of darkness and decay. They had buckled legs like a new born baby foal, twisted like tree roots, each leg ending in a small bear like foot finished with seven inch claws.. Their bodies were thin and their ribs protruded, spines jutting out of their backs. Huge leathery wings like bats grew, though I had no clue how they could fly with them. The ends were ragged and the actual wings riddled with holes. Each creature had a face like a skin covered Viscet skull, with blood red eyes. The mouths sported a forked tongue like a snake, finished off with needle sharp teeth. One of them yowled, showing off two sets of those teeth. Huge horns spiralled out of the tops of their skulls, just in front of the wolf like ears. Worse of all though was the smell, like rotting flesh. Flick jumped in front of me, snarling a warning at those animals. Those... things. More creatures emerged from the shadows, bringing the total to twelve. Twelve. Even if I had magic, I would be hopeless. I moved closer to Flick, holding my staff like a battering stick.

The forest exploded.

A cry of battle grasped from the lead creatures mouth, and it lunged at me. Flick darted forward, jaws gaping for its throat, but he was easily knocked aside. Two things went to keep my little friend occupied, whilst the remainder closed in on me. I smashed the crystal end down on the skull of one, frantically singing my notes over and over again. Come on. Come ooooooonnnnnnn. Nothing. I had kept one out of the way, but the rest were active. So this is where I would die. I was no Luna. I had no power, no ability.
"FLICK!!!" I cried, one last creature went for my throat. An arrow hit its first.

She emerged from the tree, a bow in her grasp as she reloaded her weapon.
"Stand back!" She cried, shooting twice more into the pack. Like the first one the fatal shot made the creature erupt into shadows. I was far enough back now, with the bulk of the pack preoccupied with my saviour. My back hit the trunk of a tree, which I scaled like a squirrel. From this height I could see her removing the threat on Flick, grabbing him by the scruff. She caught my eye, flinging Flick to me. I caught my little buddy, holding him close. The girl grasped the dream catcher on her collar, throwing it into the sky with a cry that sounded foreign. A flash of aqua blue light, like the colour of her hair. From where she tossed the charm, she caught a sword. She had magic!

The battle went quickly from there. She was clearly experienced in weaponry, her skill with a bow translating into the sword. Her fluffy blue hair swished, the pendant on her necklace glowed in the light of the sun. Each blow from her sword eliminated a threat, the drapes on the end of her tail floating as she lashed out. One by one the pack began to crumble. Shouting a spell in that foreign tongue again, her eyes glowed a brilliant white along with the markings on her back and tail. She locked eyes with the final creature. She turned it into shadows.

My saviour routed inside the larger pouch on her hip, removing a dusky grey crystal. A final spell called the shadows left behind by the evil creatures into the stone, turning it midnight black. She ran her paw over the smooth facets, muttering to herself. Clutching the sword by the dream catcher charm, she returned it to its normal state, attaching the pendant to the collar.
"You can come down, if you like." She said. She looked up to me, our eyes meeting. Her whole face relaxed as she smiled.
I scampered down. "Thank you so much for saving my life! And Flick's."
"It's cool. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm Saria by the way."
"Nice to meet you Saria. The names Gypsy..."

Gypsy invited me to follow her home. She told me I looked like I could use a rest, and she was right. Flick whimpered slightly to me, so I picked him up. Gypsy had said her friend Kindle from her pack could fix up Flick with ease. For a while she lapsed into silence. Who was this girl? Why had she risked her life to save me? She had know what to do to destroy and contain those monsters. How?
"Urm... Gypsy?"
She glanced over her shoulder with an old before her time look shadowing her eyes. "Yeah?"
"What were those things?"
Gypsy sighed. "The creatures that attacked you are called Nixx, remnants and small shadows of the Demons who once lived here in Myixa. They are soul stealing creatures made of decay, death and fear. They continue to grow stronger as more people fear them. They're a plague. That's why I act. The more destroyed the easier the Earth sleeps. That's why Kindle acts, as she is a Mercenary and Healer. And they are the reason Azura acts too. They murdered his entire family and pack."
"I'm sorry..."
"It's okay. Where are you from, Saria?"
"The willow tree grove on the west."
"That's a long way away... what brings you here then?"
"It's a long story..."
She looked at me with compassion, taking Flick from my back, looping him into her own. "I'm all ears Saria. If I can help, I will."

Gypsy was silent as I spoke, telling her what had happened to me since just before I left the grove. I left out nothing. About the Willow Mother and the life force of the grove. About the staff, the lyre, the medallion. I explained the prophecy, using the correct words from the stone. Everything was said. Meeting Skylla. What happened to the dead apple tree. The staff glowing. My song. My inability to make it happen again.
"And that's what happened." I finished finally. "You probably think I'm, well... mad. For believing that I am the Sage of Earth. How can I be...?"
"Your not mad, Sari. I know the prophecy. You are the Sage of Earth. I know. Trust me, I know what it's like to feel like you mean nothing. I know how it feels to believe that you could never fit a role that big."
"But... how could you? Your amazing."
"Not amazing enough, Saria. Because I am supposed to save Myixa."
I opened my mouth, closed it and tried again. I felt like a fish out of water. "..."
"I know, how can a sixteen year old save a whole world? Come on... we are nearly there." And she broke into a run.
I instantly felt bad. That's why she looked old before her time. What a weight to carry on her shoulders. And I had made it worse with my lack of words.

A few hours later I was sitting in a cave drinking a herbal brew that Kindle had made. She had a fluffy fox tail like my own, a pelt that reminded me of a silver fox, with bright gold eyes and blue-green swirls of colour. She was so kind, tending to Flick with agility and speed, her ability shining through. He was now gnawing on a bone left from a kill of Azura's. He was a dark and light brown, with soft blue-white drapes and inquisitive eyes. Gypsy sat opposite me, but I couldn't meet her gaze. Guilt radiated off of me and we both knew it.
"It's okay, Saria. Chill. I know you were just a bit surprised, like I was when I found out."
"I am so sorry, though. I made you feel awful, and made myself feel awful too."
"It's okay. Let me explain something to you. When I was two, my parents were murdered my an evil enchantress. I absorbed some of her power through an earlier attack, but my inner soul twisted it to become mine. As a pregnant mother on the verge of perishing, my mother sold her soul to an angel whilst she was carrying me. It changed me. My father was so scared to loose my mother, he accepted a deal with a demon, to save both my mum and me. I became... touched by both."
I gasped. ""The mortal touched by both Angels and Demons...""
"Yeah. Anyway, a lot happened after that. I became part of a smaller pack, until the enchantress set a fire that killed them all. I was twelve. I killed her. I watched her die. I had never felt so evil in all my years alive..." She broke away. "Anyway... Kindle took me in, and we joined forces with Azzy. That's when I heard the prophecy. In a dream. I say the Sages, myself and the Spirit of Light fighting a shadow. Though, the Sages were just coloured lights at the time. The Light Spirit introduced herself as Sheik. She told me she was waiting for me to find the Sages. Their medallions would release her. We could save Myixa... together."
"Together..."
"Will you stay with us, Saria? Will you help? We could be a family... You can belong here."
I glanced at Flick, who was wagging his tail. I glanced at Kindle and Azura, leaning against the wall nodding. Last of all, I glanced at Gypsy, her eyes pleading. My choice was so easy... "yes."

Learning Magic...

"Saria!" Gypsy called. She was standing next to Kindle at the mouth of the cave at an hour that was too early for me to even consider getting up!
"What now?"
"There's someone here for you to meet, and a friend who really wants to see you!" She sang out. That got my attention. A friend? There was only one Viscet that could be!
"Skylla!" I cried, running out of the cave with Flick on my heels as I barreled into Skylla.
"Saria! It is so good to see you!" Skylla smiled, hugging me. For a moment everything felt just perfect, the sky was streaked with orange and pink, I had a family and my best friend was here.
"Saria?" Kindle interrupted me. "Sorry to draw you away from Skylla, but Gypsy and I were talking about your staff and your magic."
I drew away from Skylla. "What about it?"
"As you know both Gypsy and I have magic, Azzy does too in a way, but not for anything but his glass creatures. We decided that it was time to help you harness yours."
"That's right!" Gypsy continued, nodding at the Viscet next to her. She was white and pastel blue, with a pouch on her hip, a blue dream catcher necklace around her next and a silk scarf. She smiled at me through the strands of her mane that fell over her eyes, but I could tell something was haunting her. "This is Ghost, and thanks to her connections in the spirit realm, she knows about your staff."
"Hi Ghost!" I said, very aware that this was Skylla's "sister" who guided spirits and received nightmares, flash backs and huge quantities of paranoia in return.
"Hello, Saria..." She said, her voice a whisper.
"Right," Skylla said. "I'll let you get on with this, and I'll take Flick hunting with Azzy if you want?"
"Okay."
"Then let's get started!" Gypsy smiled.

The first hours of my lesson began with meditation, before Ghost began to tell me about my staff. "When the Angel Luna attacked the Demon Gannon, she used only a staff made of six crystals. During that final battle the staff shattered into fragments. One landed inside a willow tree, who then became the mother of the forest."
"The Willow Mother!"
"Yes. The others landed in various places too. One in a volcano, one on a high mountain, one in the deep ocean, one in a cave of Light and one here, where Kindle found it and used it to forge Gypsy's sword. I saw that the Willow Mother knew you were the Sage of Earth when she took you in, and forged the staff from her own branches and bark, with the green Earth orb and crystal ivy leaves from the stone. So now you know where your staff comes from, you can channel Willow Mother's energy!"
"Thank you Ghost! That really really helps!"
"Your welcome Saria." She smiled. "Anything for a friend of Skylla's who is now a friend of mine."

The second half of the lesson was harder, with Gypsy and Kindle challenging me. They threw bolts of lightning and ice (Kindle) or attacked with a flurry of aqua sparks (Gypsy) until I could block, parry and destroy the magic attacks using the staff but not the magic. I do not know how long it took but with each parry and block, I learnt to use the staff as an extra limb until it became a part of me.
"There," Kindle smiled. "You've bonded. Now try an attack."
I closed my eyes and thought of home. The willow grove, the lack of Sun that somehow felt right, Willow Mother holding me in her branches. I channelled her energy. I hummed my five notes, getting louder and louder until the staff shot a bolt of green sparks and tiny leaves at Gypsy. She blocked it easily, but I knew how to do it now. I touched a tree and apples grew. Brushing the grass, flowers shot up until we were standing in a meadow. I had done it. I had done it! I ran to Gypsy and Kindle, hugging them and thanking them. I hugged Ghost too, and Flick, Skylla and Azura when they returned. Without them I couldn't have done it. I had unlocked my powers. I was the Sage, fully now.

It was very hard to pick the winner. You guys had amazing ideas. So much that I had to get help from a friend.

But i'm not here to ramble on about how much I love that you guys took an interest. The winner is milo. I love how you incorporated the meme on their coat to their everyday life and their character, plus just generally the character was quite cool and unique.

I'm not gonna offer an RU for this competition, because I have lots of breedings already on my plate, but if I could, I would. Thank you all for participating and keep your eyes out for other meme comps.

P.S please be nice and supportive of the winner.
