Short Story:
The little corner bakery was not bustling. There wasn't even one customer. And there were no orders to fill. So Honey leaned against the front counter, bored, and blowing a stray wispy curl from her face repeatedly.
Boring.
Boring.
Boring.
The front door jingled. Honey's ears perked and she quickly straightened herself out. Patted down her hair, smoothed her clothes, and put on a shining smiling. Customer ready!
Only... she didn't see anyone come in. Her head tilted in curiosity before she heard a polite cough. She leaned forward... and leaned.... and leaned until she was on her tippy toes.
Finally, she could see two little ears and the beaming face of one of her youngest regulars, a small kid. She could see her mother looking through the glass door and waving. Honey waved back with a breezy smile and a laugh.
"Anna-banana!" Honey harped, "What can I do for you today?" A container was thrust upon the counter ledge, precariously.
"I made this for you Ms. Honey," Anna said brightly, with a hopeful smile. "Alllllll by myself!"
"Wow!" Honey said with enthusiasm, "That is quite a feat Anna-banana!" She popped the container open to see.... Burnt, blackened cookies. The smile didn't falter from her face. "These look amazing!"
"Try one! Try one! Please!" Anna jumped up and down excitedly before leaning forward to whisper, "I burned them just a little," and then she shyly looked down and scuffed a foot.
"That's okay," the baker assured, somewhat internally skeptical of the cookies, but nonetheless proud. She removed one from the box and took a huge bite, crumbs flying across the counter. Honey had to fight to chew and swallow the bite. Was that garlic in them? Her eyes watered. And cayenne?! She had to blink repeatedly to keep tears from falling at the heat. Like a trooper she chewed and swallowed, sneaking the rest of the treat back into the container. "That was a pretty unique cookie!" she told the kid, "But if you want to come back tomorrow afternoon I'll teach my top-secret cookie recipe. But you can never tel anyyyybodyyy, okay?"
Anna looked utterly delighted at the offer, nodding happily. Honey could spy her mom through the window, laughing at the dilemma.
"I'll ask mom!" Anna said. "Thanks Ms. Honey!" And then she was gone with a jingle of the door. Honey sighed, letting a flower fall over the box of cookies left behind. She definitely needed a glass of milk after that monstrosity.
Ah, well. Just another ordinary day.
