Lost at sea
In the beginning, she should have seen it coming. Truly should have. After being expelled from the sailors academy for poor conduct and far too many misdemeanors Meeko found herself abandoned on the crystal clear shores of Tahiti. Namely the food fights in the mess hall and the fist fights she started. Or so the older scouts and cadets would say. In truth the well disciplined older cadets had been nothing but bullies to her and the rest of the new recruits.
The former scout had thus been pit into a war where it had been her word against theirs. No other cadet or scout would fight them. While she had been about to pack for the trip back to London, a storm that no navigator could have predicted struck the ship. Meeko had been knocked sideways while the others had been throw to the floor. Sensing what was happening she'd run up to the deck only to find the hundreds of boys all panicking and in chaos.
The plummie had launched herself into action and began to start making orders. Help man the stern Stanley! Quickly to the brig Quinton! Help those injured Iggy! For goodness sakes Captain Charles get a hold of yourself! 'Captain' Charles was a cadet with no true makings of a sailor but instantly had snapped to attention and helped the others.
Finally things seemed to be getting under control. They had managed to gather the safety rafts but Meeko recalled bitterly being in one about to depart only to feel a rough shove cast her into the water! When she resurfaced the storm raged all around her and nothing but a speck of orange in the distance could tell her where her teammates had gone. If not for a piece of driftwood that remained of their ship she surely would have drowned. And that was how she found herself on the beaches. The locals found her and within a few days had nursed her back to health. However she held a huge fear of the ocean after that, bitter and inconsolable.
At first.
But then as time grow on, Meeko began to find an odd pull to the very ocean that left her stranded. She didn't understand it, but slowly, she began to visit the tied pools and the waves. She watched the calming seas push and pull away with each sloping breach of water. She found herself by the ocean everyday, with no bravery to do more than watch it creep onto the sands. The Tahitians however held no such fear as she. They dove in beautiful arcs and dives into water deeper than she could stand and when they returned they were laden with treasures: Pearls.
Now Meeko knew of pearl diving from her academy days but no one prepared her for how much work went into such a feat. Everyday the pearl divers would rush into the water and stay down there for what felt like hours and when they returned to the surface, they held small treasures in their pouches and nets, all to do it over again in only a few hours. It was a job they had to do. And at that point in time, after several weeks of living off of beach and whatever she could get, Meeko needed one. So she became a pearl diver, but it wasn't so simple. Her fear of the water and what depths lied in wait, what things crawled underneath, frightened her and so she started small. The initial feeling of the ocean waves coming to meet her was frightening, but she forced herself not to bend, not to wilt away.
She couldn't do it.
The minute the water touched her fur she leapt away as if shocked. If she hadn't bumped into Professor Pascal however she might not have ever gotten over her fear. As it was, she bumped into him as he was returning to his home. Meeko had felt awfully....unapproachable, not exactly suited for interaction. However he invited her to dinner with him and his wife Charlotte. As Meeko would soon discover, both Pascal and Charlotte were teachers, Pascal in mathematics and science while his wife taught art. Pascal however was also an oceanographer as well and hoped to one day make a huge scientific find. Meeko had never been near such a hospitable couple before but as Meeko grew to know them they grew t know her as well and when she recounted her tale to them, they had been surprisingly supportive. Pascal even wanted to help her get over her fear, scientifically. "It's because you don't know the ocean that you're afraid of it," he'd explained and before she knew it she was learning about the ocean everyday in her classes and in their exploration to the ocean. Reluctant to let it touch her but needing to get over it, Meeko allowed Pascal to help her.
Soon she could touch the water without fear and after that she began to become more curious than afraid with each lesson. She never forgot, however what she originally planned to do once she was able to get over her fear but it wasn't long before she was pulled back to the ocean again, longing to swim. When the water swirled around her ankles and the breeze ruffled her feathers she remembered why she went to that stupid academy. To see the ocean.
Her first time swimming back in the ocean she dove into the water with Pascal and Charlotte watching from the shore in case she needed them. But there was no need for that. The water was.....soothing. Before she knew it she was exploring, recalling the things Pascal had talked of on the ocean floor. And then she found a pearl and soon started her new life.
