story:
They thought that I was blind. And indeed I am, but in a way, I see much more clearer than they do. I see in the 'blind' way. I see by using my other senses, like many blind deersserts do.
But other than my senses, I also use my mind.
"Astra! Hurry up already!" my friend was calling me. I picked my way slowly up the grassy hill. There were scents of moss, wet dirt, and dew. There was the smell of rain. Had it rained here yesterday?
When I finally got up to the top of the hill, a flat, grassy area, I sighed. The night breeze brought a sweet scent of flowers and cooled me down. The grass whispered and rustled and 'massaged' my hooves.
But really, I had no idea, absolutely no idea, what night was, what grass was.
"Oh, Astra, I wish you could see! The stars are especially beautiful tonight! Plus they say that there's a comet shower thingamabob tonight too!"
"Are you kidding me?"
Stars. Almost every deerssert talked about how beautiful, how amazing, how simply delightful the stars are. And the moon, whatever that is. And comet shower? Never heard of it.
"If you know that I can't see, what did you bring me up here for?" I asked calmly. Sometimes my friend just didn't understand what it was like to be blind, and I don't blame her, but it can be kinda annoying.
"I wanna teach you what my grandfather taught me before. To see with your mind."
"I can't see anything. To see with your mind, you must have things that have seen before."
"No, no no no, that's just science gibberish. Look up."
I looked up, my eyes still closed. "Are you just trying to make a fool of me?"
She ignored me. "Imagine swirls of red, blue, purple, pink, white."
"Pardon me?"
She groaned. "Sorry! Okay, so what you see in your mind now is probably black. In other words, it's also darkness. Now, imagine light. The opposite of that 'nothing'."
Is she kidding me? How am I supposed to imagine the opposite? "I can't."
She groaned again, "Wait, wait, wait… okay, this is the last thing my grandfather taught me. Close your eyes, and don't think about anything but what's above you. Just think 'the space above me, the space above me'."
What was space? Whatever. It was worth a shot. I emptied my mind, trying not to think about anything except for the 'space above me'.
And I saw.
I can't explain it. It's like what happened in The Giver. For some reason, I could see little white dots on the 'darkness', and I instantly knew that they were called 'stars'. Some seemed to give off purple light, some blue, some pink, and many other 'colors'. Then a 'white' 'dot' flashed across, made a line, and disappeared.
"WOO! The comet shower's startin'!" My friend's voice sounded… echo-ey. So those what flashes or lines were called 'comets'.
Suddenly more and more 'comets' flashed across, just like 'rain'. I witnessed a 'comet shower'. After a few minutes, the comets were gone. There were only the stars, and the 'moon' and 'clouds' left.
Then everything went back to muddy black.
I heard my friend walk up to me, "Did it work?"
I nodded, unable to speak.
"See! I told you it would work! The comet shower was beautiful, wasn't it?"
I nodded.
"Isn't this way of seeing great? Even I can do it, and I'm not blind!"
I nodded.
"Astraea, now you can see!" she gave me a hug.
And from then on, I saw the grass, I saw the colors, I saw everything that needed to be seen.
