The light is harsh.
That is the first thing he thinks when he wakes up, the first thing that comes to mind when his eyes flicker open. Where ever he is, the light is harsh.
One hand raises, pressed against his forehead in an attempt to shade himself. There is so little strength left in his arms, in his neck, in his body-his is as weak as a rag doll. Instinct prods him to move, to sit upright and check his surroundings, but for once he is glad to ignore the reflexes his father worked so hard to instill in him. His memories are foggy, but he remembers this much: his father has abandoned him.
A soft groan escapes him as his arm falls back to his side. Squeezing his eyes shut, he tries to hold back the tears that prick at them. He can hear soft voices, and feels gentle footsteps across the ground as something or someone hurries towards him.
Panting breaths catch at his ears, but the words are meaningless to him.
''Are you alright? Hey mister, are you alright?"
A soft hand, a small hand, grabs at his arm, but he ignores it, rolling over and pressing his face into the cool dark dirt beneath him.
He is abandoned, and the light is harsh.
