Story:It was the height of summer, and Drömmare was bored.
Standing idly in her paddock, she watched as towering clouds lazily drifted by overhead in the breeze. Born on a family ranch, Drömmare was a pet, too delicate to do anything other than pull a tiny carriage that had been an old pram for the humans youngest child. She loved pulling the tiny child around after her as he squealed in joy! Sadly, her family had left for the day to show her parents in the local fair.
Leaving Drömmare by herself, bored. Pacing the fence line again, she stopped short as a ghostly voice floated by on the breeze.
'I’m here! Hello! I’m here!'The dapple mare froze, mentally running through her options -she could stand here and do nothing (and stay bored), or she could follow the voice. But to do that…she needed to jump the fence. Drömmare chewed her lips in worry- when she had jumped fences in the past, she was yelled at. But if there was no one here to yell at her….
She was over the fence before she could even finish her mental sentence.

The little mare followed the disembodied voice for nearly half an hour. As she grew closer, the voice grew more desperate, keening out for help.
’Please, help! I’m over here! Anyone, please! Help me! I’m here!’Abruptly slowing, Drömmare realised why the voice had travelled so far- it was coming from a huge gorge! But the voice was
in the gorge……unnerved, she inched her way to the edge. Slowly sticking her head over, the mare gasped in surprise-
-There was another equid down there!
“What are you doing down there? It’s dangerous!” Drömmare whinnied. The other mare snorted, her tail swishing in irritation.
“Of course it’s dangerous! That’s why I need to get out of here!” She swayed slightly on her feet, allowing Drömmare to see the mare had injured one of her forelegs- it was swollen already with the mare keeping her weight off it.
“I-I didn’t see the gorge when I was running, and I landed badly …it’s sprained, I can’t do anything to get back up!” she lamented, ears flat in fear. Drömmare winced in sympathy- she had sprained ankles before, but never THAT badly. But as she thought over the mares words, a frown crossed her face as a thought struck her. “…How did you miss the gorge? It’s hard to see, but you can hear it. The noise carries really well!”
The other mare fidgeted in agitation, obviously troubled, before giving in.
“Alright! I thought I could jump the gap, okay? I got scared and tripped, and I fell in! Happy now?!” She kicked a hind leg, snorting in annoyance. Drömmare flicked her ears back at the mare’s harsh tone, before thinking ,
‘I suppose I’d be cranky too if I was hurt and getting questioned instead of helped!’Puffing out her chest, Drömmare resolved to get this mare out. Looking at the surroundings, the dapple couldn’t see anything of use- just a few shrubs.
‘If only I had some rope!’“Wait, that’s it!” Drömmare cried, grinning broadly. Looking at the thoroughly confused mare, she quickly explained. “I’m going to run back to the ranch and bring along my rope! It’ll reach you easy, and then I can pull you up !” The trapped mare agreed with the plan, although she was far from happy at the prospect of being left again.
“Please hurry back, okay?” She begged, near tears-but Drömmare was already gone, racing as hard as she could back to the farm. She ran faster than she ever had before, pelting into the ranch only ten minutes later.
‘Rope, rope, my kingdom for a rope…’ She thought, searching the stables. She shouted in joy when she saw the rope, snatching it in her teeth and running back, arriving panting and gasping for breath.
----------------------------------------------------------------
“Okay, grab onto this!” She gasped out, dropping one end of the rope onto the ledge. The mare instantly seized it, more than ready to get out. “Now, when I say go, climb up the rock while I pull!” Drömmare whinnied, wrapping the rope around her waist with some difficulty before grasping it in her teeth and digging her hooves into the dirt. Mumbling past the rope, Drömmare counted down. “Okay! Three…Two….One…GO!” before throwing all her weight behind the rope as the injured mare scrabbled up the rocks, whining in pain as she did so. For one horrible second, Drömmare began to slip towards the edge…..then the paints head popped over the edge, with the rest of her following behind and sprawling out on the ground in relief.
For some time the mares did nothing but get their breaths back, before the paint mare stumbled to her feet, hissing as she jostled her tender ankle.
“Thanks for that…if you hadn’t have helped, I’d be a goner. That ledge was far from steady!”Drömmare beamed at the gratitude, before remembering about the mares ankle and worrying. “Won’t it be difficult to get home with that ankle? You must live a way away, since I rarely ever see any other equids around here!” Before the mare could get a word in edgeways, Drömmare began bouncing in glee, exclaiming “You should come back to the ranch with me! My humans can fix your leg in no time!”
The mare smiled at Drömmare enthusiasm.
“Well, if it wouldn’t be too much hassle, and as long as I can leave …..By the way, what’s your name? I never even thought to ask! I’m Caya, by the way.” She said, slowly hobbling along after Drömmare and accepting the offer of a literal shoulder to lean on when the dapple mare noticed how much she was struggling.
“I’m Drömmare! It’s really nice to meet you, Caya! I just wish it hadn’t been in these circumstances!”
The two mares both laughed, agreeing absolutely on that point. Who would want to see a friend in such dire straits?
