"All that glisters is not gold;
Often have you heard that told:
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold:
Gilded tombs do worms enfold.”
~William Shakespeare

December. I'm sorry for anybody south of the equator with opposite seasons, but where I live December is always icey and beautiful and a little mysterious. It's both the coldest month (frost and snow) and the warmest: high spirits, friends meeting again for the holidays, general warmth and good cheer. This pleasant contradiction seems to suit December perfectly. Her nickname is Sem (just because it's short and catchy).▪ History (About 200 words):
Sem's mother died when she was a baby, which always seems very tragic and heroic in stories. In reality it's just life--some people aren't supposed to be around for as much of it as you might like. December's only regret is that people claim her mother was just like her. She's never been all that close with her father, and even when she was very young she knew he wasn't as bright as he could have been. That was Sem all over...leaving the man who'd given her everything in life because he wasn't intelligent enough.
But she couldn't see it any other way. December wanted to be great, a protector of her land and her spices, even her planet. Just being an intelligent, witty young girl wasn't enough for her. She left her father and her home to make her future when she was but 23.
Sem quickly discovered the world was a ruthless place for a sheltered child. She tried so hard, every day she tried, to earn her meal and make her fortune. But Earth broke her down. Told her she was wrong. The ultimate day was in late February, when a bear attacked her and permanently wounded her leg--she didn't know how it had happened. How a life so good had left her bleeding in the snow, with nobody to turn back to.
Swallowing her pride, Sem slowly made her way back to the place where she had grown up. Her father took pity on his little girl, knew she had learned a lesson she wouldn't soon forget. There she regained her strength and independence, and found a new friend: Whisper. He was younger than her by many years, but he was willing to protect her, love her just for who she was. December had never thought of herself as someone who needed protecting, but her bought with the earth at large had left her vulnerable and confused. Now she's waiting, with Whisp at her side to venture out into it again. Sem still wants to be great, remembered by the Whelkons. But if there is one thing her life has taught her, it is humility.▪ Personality (About 200 words):
Sem is witty and clever, and a bit cynical of those she considers under her. She is occasionally lacking in empathy and caring, but Whisper is changing that day by day. Her intelligence levels are very high, and having Sem as an enemy is a very, VERY bad idea. She's sarcastic and stubborn, with a dry sense of humor that takes someone special to understand it.
December also knows, with her coloring and questionable history, that she comes off as quite mysterious to your average Whelkon. She finds this amusing, and will encourage the (somewhat incorrect) stereotype to no ends. Sem enjoys being romanticized and praised, and isn't above begging for a compliment every now and again.
But underneath all that, December truly does have a good heart. She's brutally honest and values integrity second only to loyalty. A friend of Sem knows they have someone who will tell them the whole truth and nothing but the truth, in a kind and tactful way. She would rather die than desert those she loves, and can be downright sweet when the mood takes her.▪ Short Story (300 words max or disqualified):
{ This is the full story of December's encounter with a bear }
I'm telling you right now, what happened was NOT my fault. How was I supposed to know that the food I was stealing belonged to something with claws? I wouldn't have been stealing at all if I hadn't gone hungry for three days in a row before hand. I was starving, weakened, and going against all my moral principles. So it really wasn't a fair fight.
I'm telling you, that bear attacked me without even seeing what I was. I think he might have reconsidered his brutality if he knew I was a starving member of a peaceful species. But no, he didn't even look at my face (the coward) before lunging at me from nowhere. He came up from behind as I was eating a berry, and sunk his claws right into my neck. Just like that.
That cut hurt like nothing else has ever hurt. There was the sting of the actual wound, the feel of blood, MY blood, running down my neck, but there was also the intentional violence behind it. I had had it hard before, but Whelkons aren't violent like that. Nobody had ever attacked me so bluntly before.
I dropped the berries in a hurry, but not before he had taken another gouge out of my leg. Once he saw the food was his again, he ran off with it, not even staying to see if I lived or died. I sunk my head as deep into the snow as it would go, trying to numb the pain of it all.
I had been a happy girl, with a life full of promise. Now I was lying in the snow, covered in blood and completely alone.
Where had I gone wrong?▪ Why you want this Whelkon (Few sentences):
I want December because the second I saw her I felt an immediate connection with her. Not a single Whelkon in the first round caught my eye, and then this batch came out--and there were two of them. Whisper and December. I knew I had to do my best to call them my own, but if I had to choose? Sem is the one who I saw right from the start had something different. I would love to be allowed to draw her, write about her, generally cherish her...she would be special, Wind. And I truly do adore her. <3

I know right? While I'm really hopeful, I don't expect to win. My form feels so short/inadequate, I wish there was more I could do...oh well. Just want everybody to know right now the winner will be bombarded with gift art whether they like it or not!

Congrats Soriams!
You're stabbed in the back but you feel no pain
Push the heaviest doors that you can't open
Yeah, they tied me up and my body lies still, again
You're as bright as the sun and as bold as the moon
I don't know when you'll break but it's gonna be soon
If my will caves in, I'll be in the same boat as you
I've got the salt skin
Running to where he is
Never going to give in
