Fern & Mason // Prompt #2 // 336 words

"Hurry up Fern!" Mason exclaimed adjusting the last bit of his costume, standing impatiently at the door, bouncing on his heels.

He caught a glimpse of his sister's blood red dress, the lights dancing off black sequins lining the bottom. "I'm almost ready! Just hold on a little bit the haunted house isn't going anywhere!" She hollered down the stairs applying the last little bit of makeup, a nice layer of white lipstick.

Bouncing down the stairs, jumping down the last two and landing with a bit of a stumble before straightening up quickly. Before going out to gather candy from their neighborhood, the Grant twins were planning on visiting a local haunted house. It hasn't been Fern's idea, she never really enjoyed such things, but the only way Mason could go is if she went with. Doing anything to make her brother happy, she agreed to go with him. Flashing her brother a childish smile, "You look great in your costume, like a real prince," she stated glancing down at herself unhappy with her own costume.

The Grant daughter had decided to go as a vampire, an overly used idea, that she didn't feel like she pulled off well at all. Her dress, borrowed from a close friend was a little bit tight and her makeup seemed a bit smudged. "hey I know what you're thinking, you look great so stop it," Mason chuckled opening the door. "Let's get going the haunted house is going to be so much fun! Plus I heard they give some really good candy out!"

"I...Alright let's go, then after we can do our normal candy run around here right?"

Mason nodded, "Of course, I know you don't love haunted houses like me, but it's okay. I promise I'll give you some of my candy as a thank you."

Nodding excitedly she followed her brother outside, a little more excited about the haunted house. Making memories was always important to Fern even more so when it included her brother.

xxxxxminnie gazed out the window and sighed. this totally stinks.
xxxxxshe was "costuming", of course. wasn't everyone wearing a costume on halloween? she had on a little white dress with a brown belt and a red cape -- little red riding hood, of course. she wanted to find someone to be the wolf with her, but it didn't work out. that was the least of her desires, though.
xxxxxshe wanted to be out on the streets with all the cute little kids in costumes and fellow teenagers trying to push the limit with how long they could get candy. she loved the holiday; especially because it was the only day to wear something crazy and still be considered socially acceptable. minnie craved the idea of being out in the streets, bouncing from door to door.
xxxxxinstead, she was stuck at her own front door, passing out candy.
xxxxxboth of her parents were "busy" that night -- at a party, she suspected -- and didn't like the idea of some snotty kid running off with a whole bowl labelled "take one". they figured it was a better idea to make their daughter stay home.
xxxxxhmm, minnie thought, would they even know if i left? i could just leave the bowl out, and say that i stayed here the whole night. she paused. no, that's too sneaky. this won't be too horrible. i'll make myself some hot cocoa and read a book while sitting here. that way, i'll --
xxxxxher thoughts were cut off when the doorbell rang.
xxxxxa group of four (she thought that they were probably teenagers, although one looked like he was well into his twenties) stood outside. they all wore matching jumpsuits and headbands. they all looked cheerful and excited, except for the guy dressed as dipsy, who had a permanent scowl on his face.
xxxxxoh, my lord, minnie thought. they're the teletubbies.
xxxxx"trick or treat!" yelled the girl dressed as tinky winky. she stuck her pillowcase out in front of minnie, and cracked a huge grin. "you got anything good?" minnie blushed, and put a couple of packs of m&ms in her bag. she did the same for all four of them. it was a repetitive action, but she felt happy being able to give these dorks a little candy.
xxxxxas the teletubbies scampered off, minnie watched a group of small children approach the door -- within the pack, there was a ninja turtle, a pirate, and several princesses. they all had one thing in common, though: they were adorable!
xxxxxbetween the cute costumes and the ones that made her laugh, minnie could only think one thing: perhaps spending halloween night in the house won't be so bad after all.

Prompt 2:
Kalons: Hyssop

With his zombie sports-star costume finished and a hop in his step, Hyssop sets out to the scariest place he knows. His college campus.

Okay, his campus was actually not that scary, at least most of the time. Tonight, however, one of the biggest Halloween parties in town would be thrown inside the school's gymnasium. And Hyssop didn't need to be invited twice to decide he was going.

After a quick walk from his apartment to the school, he had arrived. Groups crowded around the outside of the gym, it was overwelming at first glance, however Hyssop quickly weaved his way through. Once entering the party, Hyssop was greeted first by peers complementing his costume and second by the interior decor of the building.

The once friendly and inviting gym was dark and gloomy: the windows were boarded up, a fog machine was running, and halloween music played over the loud speakers. Everyone had cool costumes, ranging from terrifying zombies like his, to sparkling princesses. As spooky as it was at first, a second glance brought the comfort that it was just his college friends dressed up and jamming, having a good time. Quickly joining the masses of partying kalons, Hyssop was overjoyed.

Spooky? No, no this party was fun!

Quincy hated this, really really hated this. The sound of creaking floor boards, the tapping of rats or mice running within the walls all screamed signs : leave. B-but he couldn't ! He shouldn't. It was a dare afterall, the enter the house of which no one seemed to live in like, forever. Okay actually it had been vacant for like 5 months but weather as of late caused the house to look dilapidated - even... haunted. Quincy peered through the front deck's window, his paws aching from the pared wood below him, the deck withered of colour. He swallowed some air and coughed, suddenly hearing the flapping of birds behind him. He squeeled and could have sworn he saw a flash of fur on the other side. Why had Godiva dared him to do this? This...this was just mean ! Having to ask for candy at such a place... Her mean spirit enjoyed seeming him unsettled and paranoid, and he could feel her gaze drill the back of his neck. It burned. He turned back to yell at her, saying he wanted an out but - she wasn't there. Fear further creaped into his mind and he turned around to face the door again and flinched when he saw a glowing red eye though the front window, and he screamed, tripping on his dragon tail's costume and falling back on his flank. Shaking, he covered his eyes only to hear the loud cackle of his 'friend', Godiva. She had opened the front door and grinned. She had gone through the back and scared him from the inside - he had never even set a foot in.

"come on Kai, get dressed we're gonna go tricker treating" Zeno said while barging into his sons room. "Dad I am busy" Kai said with a sigh. "You can do it later, I want to spend some time with my dear son" Zeno said while dragging Kai out of his dimly lit room and throwing the costumes he had purchased the day before at him. "Put your costume on" Zeno demanded. "Fine" Kai grumbled.


"I thought you said we were going trick or treating" Kai said while looking around. "Did I say something like" Zeno said well pretending to be confused. "What are you planning" Kai said while glaring up at his father. "There's no reason to get angry, its just me and Dew were planning to prank and possibly scare some kids" Zeno said while grinning. "I dont want anything to do with this. I am gonna walk home" Kai said while turning around. "Come on Kai have some fun your always being mature even though your a kid" Zeno said with a pout "I dont know how your an adult and are so immature" Kai retorted. "I am your father Kai I demand you stay and have fun with us" Zeno said with a stern voice. "Fine" Kai said grumpily.


"How and why are we in this dark forest" Kai said while turning to his father and Dew. "Obviously we're here to scare some kids. This forest has a path that all the kids take to get to the best trick or treat houses" Dew said with an evil smile. "come on Kai get into position some kids are coming" Zeno said while shuffling over to a bush.

being an ice cream man was hard, rowan decided. he stood in the line for a famous haunted house with his friend quince, who was dressed as a magician.

quince tugged on rowan’s white shirt, causing his little hat to fall down. “i’m not sure about this, ro” his soft words were muffled by his cape, which was securely tied around his neck.

rowan sighed softly and picked his hat up, “quince, don’t worry, it’s just a haunted house. you know everything is fake,” rowan tried to reassure his friend, but only made himself doubt his own words. “besides, we’re already next in line” quince shot rowan a weird look and gripped onto his hand.

”dude my hand is going to fall off if you hold onto it that tightly” rowan wheezed softly, but he secretly let out a sigh of relief. “actually, you’re okay, just hold onto my hand”

“next!” the kalon upfront yelled, and rowan froze. fear churned in his stomach and he nervously looked at quince, who was shaking.

“well, i hope we don’t die,” rowan muttered while dragging quince behind him.

“oH GOD I CAN’T DO THIS,” he immediately yelled, being enveloped by darkness. he let out a shaky breath and gripped tightly onto quince’s hand. ro quickly found the strength to walk forward.

quince, in turn, yelped and stuck to rowan’s side. “tHIS WAS A BAD IDEA” he sobbed as a zombie popped out of no where.

rowan screamed and decided to run, quince right after him. he burst out of the exit and clung onto quince, who was crying and shaking. they look at each other and laughed.

“it wasn’t that bad,” quince said, wiping tears away from his face.

“nah, you helped too, i had a lot of fun,” rowan spoke, his legs still shaky.

“your hat,” quince suddenly spoke.

“what about it?” rowan asked, fingers roaming above his head.

“it’s gone,” the purple kalon laughed, and grinned.

“i’m not going back in for a hat.”

"This is going to be sweet," Simon let out a cackle, looking down to Foster. The cat didn't look particularly pleased at the fact he had to match in costume with his owner, but he didn't have much of a choice. The E.T. theme with the two was going to stick, as Simon believed the movie to be some sort of film "classic". Not having time to think of the movie now, Simon looked over at where they were. And boy, was it ominous. The hospital near his house, closed down for about ten years, was his favorite place to explore each Halloween. It was eerie, odd, and even better, he wasn't supposed to be in there. Foster let out a small yowl, not feeling any sort of enthusiasm that Simon did here. The cat fluffed up, probably in fear above all else. "Stop being a fraidy cat, you're going to like it," Simon rolled his eyes, not feeling much sympathy. He had been here before, although, he had never brought his cat here with him. It was a bit of a disappointment that there wasn't a thunderstorm, or even rain, like it had been last time. But with a chill in the air, and the dark feel of the night setting in, it would do just fine for the Halloween enthusiast and his not-so-enthusiastic companion. And with that thought in mind, Simon opened the creaking, heavy doors, and entered with a smirk.

kalon: alana when she's a little tiny baby and is pure and doesn't deserve any of what happens to her.
......Alana's confused more than anything. It's cold. And dark. And empty...
......They said that they'd be here by now, right? Alana wraps her arms around herself and looks around the old house. The rooms are all completely barren, save for the wallpaper peeling off the walls and laying on the floor in heaps. It smells like death in the house. Like rain and earth and metal. Alana wants to go home. She's already been here for over an hour.
......The pit in her stomach solidifies as she realizes this. So she had been right. It was a trick. She should have known better. Alana forces back the tears forming in her eyes and wipes away the snot with the back of her paw. She wipes it on the blue--no, gray--skirt she'd been so proud and excited to find. It was stupid. It was just a plain gray skirt and the stupid thing she had gripped in her hands wasn't even a magnifying glass, it was a bunch of straws taped around a petri dish. Perhaps it was better that her "friends" hadn't come. They'd only laugh at her.
......Alana's feet dragged behind her as she pulled herself to the door. She didn't want to go home...
......And perhaps, she wouldn't have to. The door was locked.
......Alana's heart leapt into her throat, and not in a good way. The little kal started shaking immediately. She pulled at the door several more times, knowing it was useless. The door wasn't going to open.
......She headed for the back door immediately. It was locked too. Alana backed up, terrified. She was stuck in an old house and no one would be coming home in the morning to find her. She started to cry, not sure how else to react. Curling up in a ball she stared at the light of her flashlight, hoping someone would find her soon.

They where dressed to match: Mowgli as the scarecrow, Lionel as the lion (obviously), Hansel as the tin man, and Finley as the boyish version of a rather cute Dorothy. Henry stood proudly in the distance, admiring his handy work on their costumes, while Dietrich busied himself taking pictures.
“Don’t be out to late, stay together, and don’t go to houses with the lights off,” Henry cautioned, sending his sons off with a wave,” Call me if something happens.”
“We will!” Finley shouted behind him, smiling brightly as he forced his brothers to hurry along.
“I can’t believe they let us go by ourselves this year,” Lionel hummed, visibly pleased to be without their shadowing parents.
“Well we are in middle school now, plus there’s four of us so it’s not like we’re gonna get jumped.”
“Finley might,” Mowgli commented, causing the pink haired brother to smack his arm.
“I would not! Just because I look a little feminine doesn’t mean I can’t hold my own.”
“Right. Anyways, where are we off to?” Mowgli asked, rubbing the place he’s been hit.
“Finley said he wanted to visit the Oakland Cemetery. Apparently the high schoolers are having some kind of party there and he wants us to drop by,” Lionel answered, causing Hansel to tense.
“Cemetery? You want us to go to a graveyard on halloween? Heck no."
“It will be fuuuun. Trust me, don’t be a baby" Finley grinned, nudging Hansel down the path while Mowgli and Lionel followed behind,” We’ll get to hang out with the high schoolers and get our first taste of what it’s like to be a teenager! Arn’t you tired of being treated like a kid all the time?”
“I mean, yea but that doesn’t mean I’m cool with running around over a bunch of dead people. Especially not on a day like today.”
“It will be fiiiiiine. Nothing bad is gonna happen, trust me.”
Hansel frowned, but after hearing a snicker from Lionel he puffed out his chest and marched forward. As if he was going to let Lionel snicker at him like that.
When they reached the entrance of the graveyard, Mowgli let out a low whistle,” Creepy, dark, and there’s fog. We’re walking into a death trap. If this was a movie this would be the part where we find out there’s a murder stalking these grounds, waiting for a bunch of dumb kids to walk in so he can kill us and sacrifice our souls to satan.”
Hansel paled.
“That’s a bit extreme, don’t you think?” Lionel asked.
“Not by todays horror standers.”
“Stop talking about scary things, let’s get going!”
Finley, Lionel, and Mowgli ventured deeper into the cemetery, and after wearily glancing back over his shoulder Hansel joined them.
It was going to be a long night.
