One small mistake is enough to cause a journey’s end.
Cinna could tell she was getting close to the end of the coves. It was a good thing, too, for she was starting to lose her nerve in the unsettling atmosphere of the caverns. The emptiness was starting to get to her, and she was constantly tensed for an attack that never came. There were no signs of life here, and despite the beauty, she could feel her mental strength draining with each day she stayed. The echoes of Althasia's voice only made things more difficult, as her heart longed to see the alluring water nymph once more. This was truly a battle of the mind, and although there was no living opponent, what she faced was still formidable. It was all she could do to force herself onward.
The path she followed ended at the shore of a vast, underground sea. The coves themselves were of course full of bodies of water of various sizes, but this one was by far the biggest. It spanned across the horizon, and if there was an end to it, it was impossible for her to see. Cinna wondered where the other shore lay, and what might creatures might live there. She didn't have time to ponder this, though, as she was distracted by something she noticed in the water.
It was a soft blue glow, visually not too terribly different from the glow of the prismatic crystals lining the walls, but somehow Cinna could feel a raw power emanating from it. This was incredibly familiar, especially as the three elemental crystals in her pack began to glow in response. Without a doubt, the water crystal was resting at the bottom of this pool. The only problem was that she wasn't sure she could last all the way down and back.
But she had to try. Shrugging off her pack and setting it to the side, Cinna waded through the shallow end of the water, then swam out until she was right above the glow. Taking a deep breath, she dove underwater and began her descent to the bottom.
It wasn't long before Cinna realized how deep the crystal truly was. The pressure was starting to make the insides of her ears hurt, and she was only just able to see the line between solid gem and the glowing light. Still, she kept going, pushing through the pain as she reached out for the stone pedestal upon which the relic rested. Her blood pounding in her ears, Cinna gripped the edge of the pedestal tightly with one paw as she used the other to carefully pick up the water crystal. She then used the stone as a kickoff point to give her a boost as she swam to the surface. She was starting to grow desperate for air, as she had been down here so long that her breath wasn't sustaining her any more. Her lungs burning, she swam with shorter, quicker strokes, doing all that she could to get back above the water. And yet, no matter how hard she tried, she could feel herself growing weaker from the lack of oxygen. The surface wasn't too far away, but she simply couldn't move any longer. "
I guess this is it..." As her vision started to fade, she noticed a dark form moving towards her in the water. But before she could even process it, everything went black...
Cinna coughed and spluttered as the last of the water emptied from her lungs. She sat up and gasped for air, practically hyperventilating as she swallowed huge gulps of it. Her breathing slowed after a bit and she opened her eyes, looking around after her unexpected revival. She was lying not too far from the water’s edge, and she could see her pack not too far away. The water crystal was still held tightly in her paw, but she was more interested in the figure sitting beside her. A pair of deep sapphire blue eyes met her soft pink ones, and she couldn’t help but smile a little. “So you decided to show yourself after all.”
Althasia chuckled a bit and shook her head. “I told you, little pet, your journey is too important~ I simply refused to meet you because I knew you’d be too infatuated to leave. Obviously, if you’re doing something silly like trying to drown yourself, of course I’m going to intervene~” She leaned in and gave Cinna a soft peck on the cheek. “Now rest. Your quest isn’t over yet~” The water nymph sat by her side as Cinna recovered, and it wasn’t too long before the young adventurer felt like she could continue. “Alright, little pet, it’s time for me to go~ But don’t you worry, this won’t be the last time you see me…~” She giggled and stroked Cinna’s hair lightly, then slid into the water, practically dissolving as soon as her fur touched the liquid.
Cinna sighed softly, sad to see her go, but knowing she was right. The nymph had enchanted her ever since she had heard the mystical song in the forest, and she knew she would never truly be free of the spell. She placed the water crystal in her bag alongside the others, smiling a little as they clinked softly against each other. Fueled with a new determination, she turned to leave the caverns.
It was time she faced her biggest challenge yet.
